To be fair to the author, it includes to words request and please, both of which are polite in my book.

You would of thought such a vast amount of tracks would perhaps saturate/dumbed down his status, but not so. In fact he confirms how brilliant he is. You know the phrase 'more talent in his little finger...'

Autechre could do such a thing as upload their live sets (they are just sheer IDM genius). Dunno about BOC. I do think they may have something up their sleeves. I think they bide their time, but one day we will be rewarded.

Over 100 tracks and it's basically proven that thing he's been saying all along about having that much work done but not released true. And clearly, it's not all gold, but you know what's it shown? That he works fucking hard, for one. That he experiments - some of this stuff is pretty out there especially if you work back and think about the time it would have been made. And that he's a good editor... whittling down from this lot to come out with albums as solid as he's put out.

Autechre are another band I'm sure have some awesome stuff on the cutting room floor. Think of the experiments... but I mean even the long versions of the tracks from their later albums before they got cut down to the album cuts, y'know? Their epic Q+A on WATMM was pretty eyeopening, they pretty much answered every question thrown at them about how stuff was made, which again you might think would have demystified things but it really didn't.

If I like it I'll buy it, beyond that it's not really my business. I don't think it's a matter of image, they just don't seem to have the desire to 'play the game' and I appreciate that. I would do exactly the same in their position.
Conversely, Aphex Twin is famed for his lack of quality control, putting volumes of stuff out there, but it's borne of the same don't-give-a-fuck attitude and I appreciate that as well.
When unreleased material appears from bands, too often it seems like a record company cash in. Whether a band releases loads of stuff or very little is irrelevant to me, what's important is the motivation behind it - integrity is key.

It's interesting that someone mentioned the Autechre Q&A because this is one of the first Q&As from it:

"Q: Will we ever see another LegoFeet release?

A: possibly, we still have a pile of decent material from that era, we could have done another CD easily

what we have more of tho is stuff from between LF and Incunabula (mostly stuff Warp didn't want for Incunabula cos it didn't fit the AI theme or whatever)"

What if BOC don't actually have a final say as to what and when stuff is released? It's clear from the answer above that WARP has a massive say in what material Autechre gets released... and it would appear that it has to fit a certain WARP criteria.

Perhaps that could explain lengthy absences from both BOC and Aphex Twin. Perhaps their work at that time didn't match with WARP's criteria.

All speculation of course but perhaps everything isn't down to BOC.

They may even be pissed about it themselves for all we know. They're hardly going to slag their label off in public are they?

Interesting idea. Didn't they state a while back that they're still technically able to release material via Skam too though?

Hi Mexicola,

Yes, 'technically' for example, they've recently released Hi-Scores on Skam.

The rights to other material might already be owned by WARP though.

Again, just speculation... :)

Yeah, I was playing devils advocate really. I got the impression that while it was possible they perhaps wouldn't look to release via Skam. Who knows?

Warp owns the back catalog, but it would be interesting if they're waiting until their contract with Warp is fulfilled before doing anything with it. Maybe there's some provision that the rights to the back catalog will revert to them at that point? It would be kind of full circle if they could self-release all of that material to the world at large. I don't think they really need Warp in their corner anymore anyways.

I think they enjoy people listening to their music. Why else would they release it on one of the biggest electronic record labels? If they didn't truly care even in the slightest, they wouldn't have released their last album the way they did.

Why would you think Warp would own any of their Self Released back catalog? I'm talking about Catalog 3 through 35 Random Tracks. They were never put out by warp. It was all Music 70.

When Twoism was first reissued by Warp back in 2003 or whenever it was, it was announced at the time in a press release of some kind that they had purchased their rights to their early releases as a whole, too. That's old lore now, but I'm sure other people remember expecting other early releases after Twoism because of that announcement.

I'd like to read that "Press Release", because that's pretty interesting. I don't remember that.

Goderich: "... the entire BOC back-catalogue is included in the recording and publishing schedules with Warp Music/EMI, and therefore is copyright protected by those parties. According to the band, the older compilations being circulated at the moment are quite likely to be re-released in the near future complete with their original artwork. Keep your eyes peeled at www.boardsofcanada.com for more news about this. Peace and all the best to you,

it may be likely that they anticipated an earlier release but they decided to reevaluate the project...

also, it isn't that they don't care about the audience... it's that the work isn't DEPENDENT on the audience... as I wrote before they'd be making this music even if the audience didn't go beyond their family and friends. the choices they make are going to be influenced by THE WORK itself rather than a sense of obligation to the audience.

TBH so much time has passed I don't know if any of that stuff really holds any more. Like, are Warp going to say "No, that stuff's ours to release!" or be more like "yeah fair enough, this stuff's all old anyway". I mean, Warp is a different type of label to the one that signed BoC way back when, you just have to look at the range of artists on the roster. It's like all that talk about them saying to Autechre how some stuff wasn't in line with their AI sound, so they weren't interested. Do you see them doing that kind of thing now?

But we don't know what BoC's contract says anyway. Could be that Warp have the rights but they're time limited anyway, and if they don't release them by so many years they revert to the band, we just don't know.

2002’s ‘Geogaddi’, their second long player, involved the creation of 400 such song fragments and 64 complete songs, with 23 selected, one of which was silence

Holy shit. I would die of excitement if they ever released those.
