Re: Tomorrow's Harvest
You're probably better looking at the individual song threads to get the full picture about what folk have discovered within each song.Najlepsiejszy wrote:jcnporter said that TH is full of things going on, and I just disagreed and provided some reasons why. Saying that I don't like the album again and again is pointless, that's true, so I'm trying not to do that. I look at this thread to find out if there's something I'm missing about TH I don't know of
I'm listening to TH as I type this and as I said before, for me it's beyond the current work of any of their contemporaries that I've heard, in terms of the level of detail and complexity in each tune, the feeling that every single bar of each song has been pored over, constructed. What at first appears simple and repetitive is anything but on subsequent listens. That's the real joy of it.
For example, listening to Reach for the Dead at the moment - the drum track, the bass, the layers of synths are constantly developing throughout the song, never the same, extra little drum hits, barely noticeable extra rhythms in the background, the single word 'listen' about 3 and a half minutes in, etc., but the constant feeling that nothing is spare, nothing is out of place.
The difference in TH to what came before (and this was the same for me with TCH compared with Geogaddi) is that it's all more nuanced and subtle.
Re: Tomorrow's Harvest
It goes beyond just having lots of sounds or layers, though. Immunity is one of my favourite songs from 2013, absolutely beautiful but much simpler than most of TH.Najlepsiejszy wrote: You are making it sound like only BoC do songs with lots of sounds in them. 2013: For gosh sake, it's the year EXAI came out! In comparison to just these 4 songs, TH sounds empty and bland. You may or may not like other artists, but their works are just as or maybe even more lush than TH. Judging by TH, BoC are not very unique anymore.
Oneohtrix Point Never just isn't for me, I guess. That track sounds complex and clever but reveals itself to be simpler on subsequent listens, the opposite of BoC. It's not bad, but for me personally, there's more genius in just the composition and sound of the piano riff in Nothing is Real than in that whole song.
Autechre, again, aren't totally my thing, the masters of complex rhythm stuff sure, but not a huge amount beyond, to my ears, but then I haven't listened to a huge amount of their stuff.
Again, I'll stress that I'm not a blind BoC fanboy (there's a number of albums I would rate above any of theirs) that won't hear criticism.

Pretty cool that the hi-hat pattern in Split Your Infinities is a reprise of the one that comes in at 1:30 in Sick Times.

when i listen to jacquard causeway. or the second half of split your infinities, or even new seeds it almost sounds like your listening to some sort of machine
the timing is all so precise and seemingly mathematical. it almost feels like your listening to a mechanical process. but in musical form

Agree entirely, especially JC. The thing sounds like a Jacquard Loom built by Heath Robinson. Incredible.Fireal420 wrote:when i listen to jacquard causeway. or the second half of split your infinities, or even new seeds it almost sounds like your listening to some sort of machine

"Lurching" is the word that comes to mind when I listen to JC. It sounds like it could fall apart at any moment.

Re: Tomorrow's Harvest
There are some really spacious tracks on TH that I think are used to convey a vast emptiness, barren landscapes, cloudless skies.
But to say that the album is empty sounding on the whole, I cant agree with.
Take a track like New Seeds for example, there is so much happening in it, it sounds like a full band playing.
Drums, Percussion, Bass Guitar, Guitar, Keyboards/synth, even vocals(layered female voices). It Would be so good to see them do this in a live context and if so it would have to be played with other musicians. Other tracks apply to this theory as well
I think they gave it a great deal of thought when writing/jamming this album with a view to creating a lot of musical layers to be played with, if arranging for a live performance. I believe that like every other musician out there, they want to go out and play this stuff. Far more fun is had physically playing music live than just relying on laptop/playback,but being Boc they will no doubt use the best of both worlds, and that I really look forward to, here's hoping...

This is a pretty apt description in my opinion. Nice one.

If I had to give up one of either writing, gigging or recording music, gigging would easily be the one to go... very easily.noisy wrote: I believe that like every other musician out there, they want to go out and play this stuff.

Re: Tomorrow's Harvest
I think they nailed the sound/vibe/theme/mood they were going for and while I have to be in a certain mood myself for this album, I play it all the way through every time and love it and hear more with each listen. It's such a cohesive piece IMO. But I will say I find myself in the mood for their other albums a lot more than this one, which doesn't mean anything other than it's definitely of a different nature. But when the mood strikes, this album is all thumbs up.
Not everyone will like it, naturally. Just like Mexicola would rather lick his balls than have a peanut-butter sandwich. I on the other hand would prefer the sandwich. Or at least having peanut-butter on my balls when licking them.

Well Mexicola is moderator, I guess that on this forum people have to lick his balls, instead of him doing it himself.arvy wrote:North by North wrote:

I understand your choice. gigging can be a pain in the arse. All the arrangements/plans/set-up, transport, making sure all the gear is working never mind a good healthy dose of nerve's before a show, hoping for a decent audience and a good reaction, yeh! why bother sometimes. But at the end of the day, there is nothing like the high of performing your own material , being accepted and having a great show, it is a thrill like no otherPeacock Tail wrote:If I had to give up one of either writing, gigging or recording music, gigging would easily be the one to go... very easily.noisy wrote: I believe that like every other musician out there, they want to go out and play this stuff.
I really enjoy writing and recording, I just love it, but it,s so good to get out and perform it,especially if you are useing a lot of fancy tech.

You can describe American Beauty's OST in the same way, too. If you've never heard it, it's not the most complicated soundtrack ever. It's very pleasant to the ear, but not a musical masterpiece. Sorry if this comes off as douchey:jcnporter wrote:I'm listening to TH as I type this and as I said before, for me it's beyond the current work of any of their contemporaries that I've heard, in terms of the level of detail and complexity in each tune, the feeling that every single bar of each song has been pored over, constructed. "Lunch With The King- the piano, the xylophone, the layers of drums are constantly developing throughout the song, never the same, extra little drum hits, barely noticeable extra rhythms in the background, the guitar which starts about a minute in etc". I think that you can describe most songs like that.
Of course it doesjcnporter wrote:It goes beyond just having lots of sounds or layers, though.

Re: Tomorrow's Harvest
To whom it may concern.
yes Boards of Canada Are a Band. A Duo who play everything on their album .
I just happened to point out it sounds like a full band playing ,as in, I cold envisage them with a full line-up playing it live.
But if you think they could run around a stage. strumming a bit here and clattering this and that there then cool.
Yes I know they have the tech to perform as duo but I was pointing out the possibilities of them going out with an augmented lie-up to do so.

Do you imagine people like Bibio playing their songs with a band, too?
