I can't Believe Its Not Canada
Late last month a user posted a link to my Soundcloud in a Boc Thread on Reddit:
http://www.reddit.com/r/boardsofcanada/ ... imitating/
Since then i have received a lot of new exposure, plays and followers who speak very highly of my work and have given me nothing but support and encouragement.
However. since then i have gained the reputation among some people of being of being a complete Boards Of Canada Knock off. This was never my intention, i am highly Influenced by their style which i have never hidden and i wanted to adapt certain elements of their music and style to my own whilst simultaneously adding my own touch.
I was told about this community by one of my fans on Soundcloud who recommended that i post something here and i was curious to get some of your opinions.
What do you think?
Thanks.
Sean.

You do sound quite similar imo. Have you considered changing your artwork because thats very similar aswell, it might make a slight difference to how you are perceived?
Re: I can't Believe Its Not Canada
It might not have been your intention, though I'm pretty sure it was , but you're doing a great job at it. Some of the synths are smack on. Very impressive. Its mostly boc-maxima/mhtrtc era, could do for some more geogaddi in there

I don't know if Circuit Jerk has been floating around these boards lately, but a little while back we were actually listening to your bandcamp stuff. I really like that direction you were taking on your Garden EP, it seemed a little bit more percussive and bare-bones
Re: I can't Believe Its Not Canada
I've been listening on soundcloud for the past week and I do think that those tracks are very similar to BOC.
However I really like it and get some of the same kind of undefinable nostalgic feeling from your music.

Well i would just like to thank everyone one of you for you constructive criticism.
I would just like to pose one more question.
Do you think i should continue with my present style of music or revert back to my Garden E.P stage?
I have been considering it for a while.

Do whatever the hell you want. Don't let a bunch of strangers on an internet forum decide that for you.

I'm enjoying the Garden EP, by the way. Nicely done. Haven't listened to the other stuff yet.

Re: I can't Believe Its Not Canada
It does remind me of early BoC, but moreso of Nathan Fake, as it sounds cleaner, less hazy and tape-warbly than early Boards.

I think it's perfectly possible to get somewhere between the two styles. Personally I find the sidechain compression a bit wearing on the Garden EP so I prefer the more recent material production-wise. I think it works when you take a little bit of BoC's style and combine it with something else - Sun Dance is a great example of that and is probably my favourite of the tracks I've listened to.MrSunshine wrote:Do you think i should continue with my present style of music or revert back to my Garden E.P stage?
I have been considering it for a while.
I must admit to thinking that a couple of the tunes were highly reminiscent of a specific BoC tracks - The Night Before The Brand New Day (Everything You Do Is A Balloon crossed with Happy Cycling) and The Descent To Autumn Cove (XYZ).
You obviously have other influences and I think it's just a matter of getting the right blend of them. As FortonServices says: Make the music you want, not what others say you should do.

Just to add. Everything you do is a balloon is one BoC track ive never actually listened to, so if it sounds similar that is a complete coincidence hahah

Re: I can't Believe Its Not Canada
neat. i work in govan for another two weeks. Live in dennistoun. sorry to derail haha. you should make a thread for promoting your work though if one doesn't exist already, cause you really do have something going on there.
i think EYDIAB reference is just to the chord structure which is something BoC themselves use all over the place.

It was more the twinkly intro part I was thinking of… but you're right, EYDIAB does have a very BoC signature chord sequence. Still up there in my top 10 BoC tunes.Techboy wrote:i think EYDIAB reference is just to the chord structure which is something BoC themselves use all over the place.

If you get a lot of exposure on the Internet, you have to expect people who will not like your work, even some who will ditch it just o ditch something. Personally, I just take criticism when it's thoughtful and significant. The Garden EP is pretty good by the way, nice work!

Some really great stuff you've got going here!
I'm not such a soundcloud (online) listener so I'm wondering if you got Eighty-Sixed up for download somewhere?

I'm normally snappy and asshole-ish to stuff like this, but I'm in a contemplative mood.
you obviously have a talent, I just fail to see why someone, when given the gift of creativity, would go down a path already well worn by another artist.
But like said up a few posts above, don't listen to what some idiot says on the internet, do what you want to do. I just probably won't listen.
