Re: Insomnia
It's a suggestion that is often scoffed at, but I've found from experience that a change in diet can have huge physical and mental benefits, including more/stable energy levels and better sleep. For me eating a paleo-type diet works - basically giving up sugar, grains (and so reducing carbs) and replacing with vegetables and unprocessed foods.
Again it seems simple, but just being immersed in nature I find calms my mind - in particular, for me, staring at trees silhouetted against the sky, takes me back to my childhood, I can just sit and zone out, which I guess ends up being a type of meditation.

Re: Insomnia
Got some Zopiclone. I'm currently so tired that The Campfire Headphase is actually sounding pretty good.

"The worst thing about not being able to sleep is, the lack of relief. "
Oh, man - I know that feeling. Going to bed knowing you might get half an hour of so before the next round of being wide awake for 2 hours. Repeat until morning.
I've had horrible periods of not being able to sleep. A few periods caused by some unknown stress/anxiety - still not sure what. Others caused by small people. I do remember when our eldest was at his worst at being up in the night I seriously considered knocking myself unconscious...

Re: Insomnia
Ha, funnily enough, my current bout is due to LACK of a small person. Ie, I'm having to get legal advice, sort out mediators, etc, in order to make sure I get to spend time with my small person. Ironically I'd probably sleep far better if she was here, keeping me awake at night.

Shit man. I'd invite you round to drink whiskey and be bitter but you live far away.
If you ever want to unload on a stranger who is remarkably good at helping other people through shit like this (despite being terrible at it himself) then send me a message.

Re: Insomnia
mirtazapine is very good, and can be taken long term, without causing dependency like benzos or ambien. Ambien never worked for me. Mirt does come with withdrawl symptoms if stopped cold turkey after long use, but it's not physically addictive and cant kill you the way a benzo cold turkey most certainly can. I had shocking insomnia, and it does wonders for me, where traditional sleeping pills consistently failed. Its unusual too, the lower the dose, the more sedating. It causes weird vivid dreams, but i like them, and it doesnt interfere with your levels of sleep like benzos/ambien etc. A gradual taper with your doctor and you should barely feel coming off them. i'm on 30mg now and 2 hrs after taking it, im ready to crash most nights. I take 10mg lexapro for anxiety disorder, luckily no side effects, bit of dry mouth and pupils can often dilate fully, but i think if i didnt have the mirt, i'd find it much more difficult to sleep, starting on 15mg lex next week.
