Re: UK General Election
If anyone thinks voting in the rest of the UK is pointless, they should try living in Northern Ireland.
What would supporters or members of your preferred party/ideology have to do before you would stop voting for them? Claiming the earth is 6000 years old? Supporting terrorism? Homophobia? Racism? Or just good old-fashioned lying and corruption?
Doesn't make a bit of difference to the voters in this part of the world - apparently whether you prefer British or Irish nationalism is more important.

My god, that exit poll. Terrifying.

Only slightly surprised to be honest. If the Scottish referendum taught us one thing, its that people content with the status quo don't shout very loud. They do, however, get off their arse and vote. Pensioners and the wealthy.

Re: UK General Election
I wasn't all that surprised either, just exasperated, after all these phoney stats showing how close a shave it might be. Still though, even with the SNP potentially battering Labour in Scotland, the Tories have only just approached a possible majority, if this is to be accurate. So y'know with Gove and Boris shouting about a comprehensive Conservative victory, it's pretty embarrassing all said and done. At least Bristol West looks promising for the Greens, 2 seats would be a victory in my eyes. Darren Hall is a good candidate and partnered with Lucas, that can only be seen as progress in Westminster.

Gove though, what an odious toolbag. Up there with IDS on the unpleasantness metre.

Re: UK General Election
Polls indicated it would be far closer between Labour and Conservative prior to voting, though the exit polls have shown a more lop sided advantage to the Tories, with the SNP taking a huge number of usually safe Labour seats in Scotland. Meaning that it is quite likely that the Conservatives will make a small majority, and maintain their government. Farage is apparently going to lose South Thanet though, so y'know, silver lining and all that.

Re: UK General Election
It's completely up in the air at the moment, but it could be a minority government, coalition or possible majority for the Tories.

Completely fucking depressed. Seriously, if it wasn't for my daughter living down here, I'd be off to Scotland in a heartbeat.

Hold me I am scared. I don't think I can live another five years with these people. The kind of people that would call the police and insist you get off of their property if you showed up on their doorstep with a limb missing.

Re: UK General Election
there are some glimmers of hope from the perspective that EU ref could force scottish indy, which would have huge constituitional effects in remaining UK. further to that, if the conservs are genuine bout their commitment to the union, after a full SNP sweep which once upon a time would have been cause for a unilateral declaration of independence, they better start looking at more radical ideas than simply further devolution. even the likes of boris johnson was hinting at federalism, that's potentially a massive shift about to occur at westminster.
of course, all this is incredibly optimistic and what's going to happen is that further ideological cuts will be made, further market deregulation will occur and further selling off of public services to the private sector. well, whatever, one can dream.

Just goes to prove the depressing truth of what a self-centred, greedy and socially irresponsible nation we are. Fucking grim five years we've subjected ourselves to. Just watch that rich/poor divide widen. I despair of my country sometimes.
