If you had to introduce someone to BoC with one song...
...what would it be? If someone said "I want to get into Boards, but I only have time for one song", what would you show them?

"I want to get into Boards" is so vague! It's not as bad as "I want to get into Radiohead" or any other band with a massive scope but it's still difficult.
The golden age of BoC? They can have it the easy way, standard or the hard way. They get the knight, queen and king prix selection.
According to that, my choices would probably be something like Melissa Juice, You Could Feel the Sky and Julie and Candy respectively. Then they should follow a flowchart. Want more of the Melissa Juice sound? Twoism, Old Tunes, etc...want the modern BoC sound? Start with Hi Scores and go chronologically. Tackle TCH whenever you want.

I guess you're right. I saw this flowchart a while ago and I think it sums it up pretty well.

Difference is that is *not* the flowchart I would show somebody. It's a bit cliche.valleaux wrote:http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/6649 ... anada2.png

I think if someone is trying to get into the band as in listen to their records then they should start with their first official release. Hi Scores and then MHTRTC. Then they can go wherever they want in a flowchart manner based on...more particular things. I don't see how guitars are really very notable when you need to describe TCH like the album somehow is based around them.

It would depend on the person. My brother, for instance, is really into hip-hop, so I started him out with MHTRTC.
I have a mate who likes John Carpenter soundtracks, so TH for him.

...I wouldn't.
I'd rather just steal their music player and put Geogaddi on it, then place it under his bed.

I blew a girls mind when I played Gemini and now Tomorrow's Harvest is one of her favorite albums.

You could probably damage someone quite severely doing that.

Dayvan Cowboy usually works well for that purpose

If they like that, they'll be in love after listening to Roygbiv or Kid for Today.

nice, considering it's BOC's most esoteric album.HighScore wrote:I blew a girls mind when I played Gemini and now Tomorrow's Harvest is one of her favorite albums.

I've been thinking about this, and I think that Left Side Drive is a good candidate.

I've shown Julie and Candy to 2 of my friends, they liked it a lot and were blown away by the whole mystique BoC has after me telling them about it.
Along with that, I've shown Constants are Changing (my favorite of all time) to 2 of my other friends and they told me tons of deep stuff about their emotions and one of them said the song made them cry, heh.

I guess I could rephrase the question. I have a friend who's always been into grunge/indie rock, but she doesn't have much chill/downtempo music so she came to me to get recommendations. I showed her Tycho and she loves them, so I thought maybe she would like BoC? TCH is probably more her speed, so does that sound right to you guys? I'm pretty sure she wouldn't like Geogaddi.

If she's into indie rock, show her TCH and IABPOITC. Those are going to be the easiest to get into probably.valleaux wrote:I guess I could rephrase the question. Re: If you had to introduce someone to BoC with one song...
I find BOC one of the most difficult bands to introduce to anyone. I used to start most people on TCHP, usually with either Chromakey or Peacock Tail as those are my favourites. But these days I try to tailor it as much as possible to what I think someone might like (though not necessarily what they currently listen to). Funnily enough, my old teacher who mostly listens to classical such as Part and choral music (she's a singer as well) really loved Into the Rainbow Vein, Happy Cycling and Seven Forty Seven.
The issue is that because their music is quite varied and contains wildly different emotions and tempos, it is easy to give someone a false impression of what they are and what their approach is. Younger people actually tend to find it more difficult to get past this, as so many of us listen to music in a shallow and purely aesthetic sense. I find that aspect particularly frustrating when showing any kind of music.
