Are BOC catchy?
Now, this question is a little deceptive. I'm not asking if you find their music enjoyable. I think it's fairly safe to say that everyone here enjoys BOC's music; this is a BOC fan forum, after all. What I'm asking is if BOC songs are catchy to you in the same way songs by your favourite rock or pop group are? Is it even possible to compare the lead synth melody of a BOC track with the vocal melody of a pop track?
Re: Are BOC catchy?
I'd say that's true of a handful of them, especially from the MHTRTC era. For evidence, I'm gonna point to a barbecue I had yesterday with some friends who don't really know BoC. I had a playlist full of songs from a bunch of artists, BoC included, and I'd say that Roygbiv, Sixtyten, Aquarius, and Nlogax fit the mold of what you describe.
If The Campfire Headphase was a butterfly, would Acid Memories be the caterpillar?

Aside from the occasional funk groove, no.

Correction: Is it even possible to compare the lead synth melody of a BOC track with the vocal melody of a pop track?
lol of course it's possible
here's what I really meant:
How meaningful would it be to compare a BOC track with the vocal melody of a pop track?

A lot of MHTRTC is catchy. I think Roygbiv is the most poppy track they have and I always find myself bobbing my head to Rue the Whirl for whatever reason.

I didn't understand the hype about Roygbiv until I found myself one day with its bassline caught in my head on a loop, so I would definitely say that Boards of Canada songs are very catchy. I don't see why anyone would say they aren't. Most of them follow the same structure as standard pop songs, the song Trapped even proves this.

Yes very catchy, i'd say their albums with the most cathiest work ive heard from them must be the Few Old Tunes Vol 1 and 2 and random 35 track.
The other album have really good music, but its not as much catchy. Well, maybe Geodaddi.
The most catchy one for me would be track 4 of Random 35 Track.

Yeah, but the fact that BoC's style fits so well with a pop song like that shows how poppy their music is.Torn n Frayed wrote:drillkicker wrote:I didn't understand the hype about Roygbiv until I found myself one day with its bassline caught in my head on a loop, so I would definitely say that Boards of Canada songs are very catchy. I wouldn't go as far as to say that all songs are catchy, but some of them are

Huh? Weird, I thought I already posted here. Guess I didn't submit it.
Hell yes, what Cupz said. I'm not sure I would love them anywhere as much today if they weren't so much.
I mean, just listen to Julie and Candy. Wow. Still really don't have the proper words to describe that song.
At the other end of the spectrum, for completely different reasons, Nlogax. We start with with the loop. Simple, minimal. Song slowly adds layer and layer until it builds over time until we finally get that first incarnation of the iconic cut up voice thing BoC loves.
And disregarding my own tastes there's all those tracks like Sixtyniner and EYDIAB with these beautiful layers of samplers that just get you on the first listen. At least they did for me...

Re: Are BOC catchy?
I think most people would see the immediate appeal of Roygbiv. It's instrumental pop music. But I, personally, would throw in Bocuma, Alpha and Omega, Chromakey Dreamcoat and Nothing Is Real as well.
