Your First Listen

Someone sent me 1969. Which hit me instantly, I never heard that kind of music, actually i hated electronic (..) music, cause all they do is turn some buttons, right?
I also just started doing weed around that time, so all of a sudden this sounded like a very interesting combination.
I downloaded some more separate tracks from boc and made my own compilation cd. So there I was, laying on bed, listening this" spacey" music, while smokin some. Good times.
Anyway it grew on my over the months/years, and my whole music taste started to change, because electronic music was ok now. First it was guitars only, now everything can sound good to me.
Later i started reading on boc an read it isn't quite all electronics.

So anyway, pretty damn big band in my music history.

Oh, and these days i still think of 1969 as boc's "pop"-song for some reason.

hey gang! did what i could to look for this topic, and i couldn't find it, but my apologies if it already exists in some form.

ITT: what was your first experience with BOC? what song/album did you start with? what hooked you? how did it make you feel? for example, i'll start with mine:

a few years ago, back when i was in high school, my best friend and i were in a band together, along with some other friends of ours. (we weren't a great band, but we were certainly more ambitious than most bands at that level, if not, you know, good. anyway:) we headlined a gig out of town, which at the time was a big deal for us, and it was our best/most-attended show up to that point. when we finished the gig, we triumphantly loaded everything into the back of my friend's van and drove the hour or so back home. at some point during this (left side) drive, one of my friends put on "Dayvan Cowboy," which i'd never heard before. but, as you can imagine, driving down the highway as the sun was setting (after coming off the excitement/rush of a good gig) listening to that song was almost a religious experience.

what really hooked me to BOC later, though, was finding a used copy of the MHTRTC remaster at a Half Price Books for something like 5 dollars. i listened to it upon getting home, and, well, now i'm here!

anyway, that's not a particularly interesting story, i know, but that's how it happened, and i'd love to hear how some of the rest of you got into them as well!

I listened to Geogaddi first, just because I liked the way the cover looked. I loved Ready Lets Go, but i couldn't wrap my head around the whole thing at the time and shut it off prematurely. Upon trying out some of their other stuff (mainly MHTRTC), I came to the conclusion that all the Boards' music sounded the same and just wasn't for me.

A few years later, when all the major album/ep repressings were happening, I saw Geogaddi sitting on the shelf of my semi-local record store. I figured I'd give it another go, since I am a very shallow person and seeing that cover again reminded me how badass it looked. I fell in love with it over time, all the little subtleties and mystery surrounding the album blew my mind. It now ranks as probably my favorite album of all time, and BoC my favorite band of all time

i can't really remember why i first bought their albums. i had heard them from someone i know that really liked them, as well as in the salad fingers videos, but i can't remember what it was that got me to buy the albums.

My first time hearing BoC was on Salad Fingers.

If you mean my first experience knowingly listening to them, I listened to a leak of Tomorrow's Harvest a bit before it was released and I instantly loved it, so much that it nearly brought me to tears, so after letting that album soak in for a while I listened to Geogaddi, then Twoism, MHTRTC, IABPOIC, Hi Scores, TCH, Old Tunes 1 and 2, Random 35, and Trans Canada Highway (in something similar to that order). The other releases weren't as immediately captivating as TH (and I hated MHTRTC on the first listen), but now the Old Tunes, 35, and Twoism are my very favorites.

Exai was still my favorite album of the year, though.


Oh, and I feel it should be noted that I actually had Geogaddi downloaded onto my hard drive for a long time before listening to Tomorrow's Harvest. I never bothered to even look at it that whole time, not knowing what I had there.

For me it was back when i was still into programming, i was hanging around Gamejolt talking to people more than being productive.
This friend of mine from Gamejolt kept trying to shove down my throat "BoC" each time we came speaking about music.

One day, after browsing some new music (I was getting bored of Com Truise which was my favorite artist back then) and decided to give BoC a second chance. "Music is math" Impressed me, i liked it.

One night around the little hours of the morning i was on eyewire.org tracing cells branch and i had left "random 35 tracks" running in the background. Boards of Canada became my favorite since then!




It blew my minds when i discovered Com Truise came from _Twoism :p

A cursory google search reveals that he's had certain ties to this forum via collabs (remixed a Saturday Index track for instance) or label mates, but nothing specifically saying he is or was actually a member.

Not that I distrust you, I'm just curious.

As it happens, I might need to give him another listen anyway. I have only encountered In Decay which wasn't my thing.

Chromakey Dreamcoat. I think I heard the song from Adult Swim. Actually, I had heard of BoC before that, from David Firth's Salad Fingers series, just hadn't bothered to pick them up until I heard Chromakey.

I'm a latecomer, I know, but still as obsessed as the best of ya.

I heard BOC for the first time unknowingly from Salad Fingers it was Beware the Friendly Stranger, and to this day I can't listen to that song because it was ruined by salad fingers. The first BOC i heard knowingly though was Aquarius from a friends recommendation.

Music is Math off Geogaddi. I didn't 'get' it right away, but they just keep finding their way back into my head until I decided to dig further. I started finding favorite tracks and adding them to playlists - 1969, Julie is Candy, You Could Feel the Sky, etc. and just dug further and further from there. I distinctly remember my first playthrough of MHTRTC and backing up Telephasic Workshop over and over and over, discovering new layers every time. That's what hooked me. The rest is history.

One of my friends have a very interesting music taste, so half of my favourites come from his suggestions. One day he sent me this weird video with an anime at the background and some very beautiful music. I was like "Wait, I know this song! ... or do I?" It was a strange and interesting experience, hearing a track that sounds like a song which you know very well, something from your very early childhood, but actually you've never heard it before. I immediately fell in love with it.

He is known as Sarin Sunday, Airliner and Systm. Check out his releases 1, 2, 3, 4. 5, they are worth it! He also submitted a track for One on Twoism vol.1

Don't mean either of those unfortunately, the video was taken down a while ago. It involved an alien encounter if I remember correctly, fitted incredibly well.
