Similarity of MHTRTC's Aquarius with TH's Cold Earth
Anyone ever give them a listen back-to-back and notice some similarities, particularly the chords and their lengths in the intro? I haven't been able to find good transcriptions of either to compare on paper.
Do you hear anything?

Different mode, very different intervals, and much more fast paced drums, with slower and more subdued bass. The sounds are all infitely clearer without all the tape saturation and disintegration. On top of all that, they have entirely different tones and emotions with different structure. The only similarity I hear is the motoric voices.

Re: Similarity of MHTRTC's Aquarius with TH's Cold Earth
I think what I'm hearing is the intervals and lengths of the first few notes of each song. Bear with me here, but it sounds like there is an initial note followed by a longer note a step lower, then a note of similar length to the first a half step above it. Or some kind of intervals like that. Does that make sense?
Re: Similarity of MHTRTC's Aquarius with TH's Cold Earth
As far as the introductory notes go I really agree with you actually. The same can be said about Sick Times and Pete standing alone. Sick times sounds like a kind of dark reprisal of it especially given the introductory notes. Welcome aboard if you haven't already been welcomed (:

Re: Similarity of MHTRTC's Aquarius with TH's Cold Earth
I honestly think that you're making the connection up in your head and personally don't agree with you, but i'm very very glad you're thinking and making your own connections whether other people here can hear it or not. I don't hear it, and see no similarity between the two pieces of music that are really meaningful, but i've come back online especially to say that Rodheh's reaction on this page is exactly why I stopped coming here and exactly why I pulled out of the twoism meetups I was really looking forward to going to.
Rodheh, you're a very alienating presence and I think you take a perverse pride in it.
Now to log out and go back to lurking. I'm not being drawn into an argument, just making an observation I think a lot of lifers here are too afraid to make that deserves to be made.

Re: Similarity of MHTRTC's Aquarius with TH's Cold Earth
I say there is a similarity there, but it's marginal at best. My musical training is slight, but enough to say there isn't much; but since you can hear it, it's interesting to work from there. Not every analysis needs to be entirely based on traditional music theory, you know. For one, it's interesting that a melody based mostly on slow moving chords can result in two radically different things in terms of mood and sensation.
Yeah, what's up with that? What is this place, a BoC fansite or a League of Legends match?number-six wrote:Rodheh, you're a very alienating presence and I think you take a perverse pride in it.

The problem with this mode of communication is everyone applies their own emotional context to what was written. I don't think rodeh meant anything negative by that in all honesty. People have said worse on this forum...

Seriously? I just sold my car so that I could make two long trips to meet with people from this community I find interesting and I do not believe I was ever at one point alienating to any of them, unless they state otherwise at some point in the future.number-six wrote:Rodheh, you're a very alienating presence and I think you take a perverse pride in it.
I take pride in very little as it's a stupid idea. Even my supposed achievements can't be looked at in any manner other than "it sucks" - my pride in anything is at its absolute lowest in years.
There's no malice in any of my posts. What I said was preferable to "what in the hell are you talking about, I hear no connection whatsoever" as far as I'm concerned. You really, really need to get to know someone before you say something like that mate.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

For the record, I chat to both of you outside this forum and you're both just fine. Posts and emails can often come across harsher than in real life. Easy to misinterpret the intent.

Re: Similarity of MHTRTC's Aquarius with TH's Cold Earth
Are there transcriptions into musical notation of either song? Sites that offer them or other resources to look at? I suspect that I hear something that I'm not describing very well and looking at the sheet music may help me to clarify my point.
Overall, I do not think the tracks sound a lot alike. Just the intros.

Re: Similarity of MHTRTC's Aquarius with TH's Cold Earth
I'll go ahead and listen to the intros right now...
Hmm....
No dice as far as I can hear. Pretty distinctly different. Alpha and Omega is about as similar to Aquarius to me as this is - in that it isn't at all with the exception of a reprise of one particular musical effect.
I think a lot of people make a lot of different connections that are not blatantly obvious on the surface or are totally fabricated. I have one, which is this weird sense of how the non-album stuff that BoC has done for other people (i.e. Poppy Seed reprise) sounds "more BoC" than their actual tracks. I know that statement makes no sense whatsoever so I don't tend to bring it up. However, I won't say that the OP is invalid in any way because there may be something extremely subjective he/she is hearing that we are not.
Nevertheless I cannot hear it, hence the "...what?" - the do both start with standalone pads, but then again so do many other BoC tracks. Past that point, I hear no similarities. Aquarius feels like Hair to me. Cold Earth feels more like something I might have expected to hear on Trans Canada with that sterile sound to its percussion.

Orange romeda poppy seed seven forty seven. These tracks are all more BoC than BoC to me also.Rodheh wrote: I think a lot of people make a lot of different connections that are not blatantly obvious on the surface or are totally fabricated. Poppy Seed Reprise is definitely one of the most "BoC" songs out there.
