Mike P did a soundcloud dump too. I really don't know if BoC would follow, but I obviously hope beyond all hope that they do. Aphex Twin is up there as one of my favorite musical acts, but BoC remains number 1 to me. As excited as I was for Rich to release all of those songs, I'd be even more excited for BoC to do the same.

There need to me more good guys like Mike and Rich in electronica. BoC are grumpy old men, ae are out of touch with the world (though that isn't necessarily a bad thing), and Venetian Snares just plain hates having fans.

if you can't be happy with the music that is available to listen to now how can you be happy with the music that may be out in the future?

Plenty of bands don't release stuff that isn't up to their standards even though it's actually really good by the audience's standards. A little while back some leaked rough mixes from Pearl Jam's Avocado Album found their way onto the 'net, and some of them have actually become my favorite Pearl Jam tracks.

That said, I'd still be ecstatic if BoC were to release some prime choices from their "collateral" material.
If The Campfire Headphase was a butterfly, would Acid Memories be the caterpillar?
Spoiler: show
Unfortunately I have no clue lmao. But while you're here, go ahead and check out some of my tunes! You might dig 'em and stuff!

Honestly I'd hesitate to call Mike one of the "good guys" of electronica. I've seen plenty of quotes from him with less that subtle slams on BOC's output, and perhaps other vague off hand remarks that painted him as an overly cynical prick in my mind
Not to mention the recent old tunes tapes thing that ended in those (potentially faked/joking) videos of them being smashed/destroyed with elatated laughter

Then there is the fact that his planet mu label's output over the past many years hasn't always pointed to a sense of quality control

But I digress. if what marks him as a "good guy" in electronica is simply the soundcloud dump then surely Autechre's actions with the expanded quaristice material negate their exclusion

Or... Maybe I am just overly critical of the guy. That is possible

Welp, what can I say? We seem to have this conversation every other week. "They're ungrateful", "they're grumpy", "they don't care about us".

They don't owe us anything. They've given us a career of releases which are up to their own ridiculously high standards, which is both to their benefit and our benefit. Judge them on what they do release, not what they don't release. What RDJ is doing is nice, but that shouldn't mean everyone is obliged to do the same.

tl;dr grow up.

I think it's nice that Mike prioritizes other artists' music over his own so that they can become successful in his label. But I haven't followed his comments to other people, and I don't know where I would even find them. The Old Tunes thing was almost definitely fake. The only thing I'm sure of is that the cases were definitely empty, which leads me to believe that the jcards and the cases themselves were fake.

While Autechre did share a lot of Quaristice stuff, which is probably my favorite stuff they've released, they also don't seem to value their music as much as they probably should. It seems like a lot of it is better than they give it credit for, judging by the live bootlegs that were recorded from their shows. Almost all of their sets are gone forever, and they've made finished songs that they just deleted because they don't care about keeping things that are finished, only modifying things that still have more possibilities. They have a very unusual ethic regarding music. That's why I said that they're "out of touch" instead of bad guys. But it was just a silly joke and not meant to be taken seriously.

I am hesitant to even talk about this cause it feels so personal yet I feel I have to express this here to hopefully

do we really need more, more, more?

I feel that BoC are so special and sacred precisely because of their conduct and commitment to not exposing themselves or their music in anyway that conforms to the expectations of others! Giving into that seems to be where the magic becomes lost and the mystery ends... If you pay attention to what BoC has said in interviews then this wouldn't sound surprising.

and yes, I feel a magic to Richard's recent releases through soundcloud because that is HIS EXPERIENCE and his style and it is him honestly expressing himself!

again, I will say, if your desires are pointed towards MORE you're missing what's going on NOW

The stuff we want, BoC already released many years ago - albeit in very small quantities because they had next to no fans at the time. The onus is on us to find these recordings in the wild, not beg for them to be released again. They're already out there.

Heck, someone reading this might even be in possession of some of them.

I have proposed a bounty and hope others would pitch in too.

I really liked some stuff that RDJ has put out in his earlier leaks, especially the more ambient kind of stuff.

But these latest tracks, to me they just sound like him fucking around with his equipment more than actual tracks? I probably just don't get it, but this really doens't do anything for me.

And god yes, please, Boards of Canada, please do this as well.

Some of it thats exactly what it is for sure. Jams, experiments, sound design... not standalone tracks, just an emptying of the vaults.

Curating is a forgotten skill. Dumping hundreds of tunes online seems about as far from BOC and their ethos as it's possible to get. Besides, after the leaks of the Old Tunes et al, I think they've every right to be as insular and disconnected as they choose to be.

What makes anybody think they have a vault full of unreleased tracks? Maybe their time put aside for tracks & output is limited being a duo.

That's not saying they probably haven't got one or two gems sitting there but I'd rather wait for a proper releases than just crumbs, even if it was for an offcuts & random tracks release from past projects. Keep the quality up I say.

Xyz would be nice to have it has to be said though.

At a duo, that's 100% more personnel than the Aphex Twin :)

Well, there's all the tracks from the unreleased, known albums... I know people like to match the track times up with stuff off the Old Tunes and R35 tapes but I'm willing to bet that most of those tracks we've never heard. Then there's interviews where they've talked about culling the tracklisting for Geogaddi down from the hundreds etc. can't see why any other album (particularly the ones that came after long gaps) would be any different either. Interviews where they've talked about making stuff that's not BoC style and so on... there's not any way that there's not a vault of stuff there.

Same as with AT though, I can see a lot of that stuff being unfinished tracks, stuff that produced just for sampling and so on, so it's not gonna be literally "hundreds of complete tracks" as much as it's "hundreds of bits of tracks with a portion of that being finished stuff that never made the cut".

Don't mistake grump for perfectionism, it's definitely in the mix w/BOC (and it's what I think is behind Paradinas' remarks w/r/t BOC too). BOC is audio and visual, so maybe it's wait for redbook+ with art instead of 320kpbs, who knows...I can't see them never trying.
