Like I said before, I completely understand if they want to keep the music to themselves, I actually admire how much they care about making their output as incredible as possible. I'm just confused by the lack of communication, but that's to be expected I suppose

Ha! Yes, we can certainly agree on that point

I wouldn't want to make these forums more negative due to my comments. After all, we're all here because of our shared love of their music.

They don't even owe us an explanation as to why the BOCset hasn't happened (yet), but I'm willing to bet that more important stuff has gotten in the way. Like making new music, and families and such.
I understand the frustration, but in the end, it doesn't make them wrong just because they want only the best of their work out there. The way they see it, and indeed the way I see it, they're doing right by their fans this way. Because the fans only want what's up to scratch, and obviously they don't think a lot of their unreleased work IS up to scratch. You or I might think it's worthwhile to have the 200 snippets from the Geo sessions, or the older albums that may or may not be amateurish, but they don't. They don't think they're good enough. They aren't an "ok" release band. They're an "as close to perfect as is possible" release band.
This same philosophy is the reason why we have such a singularly hypnotic and high quality discography from them. They're not grumpy, or ungrateful. Those who demand more and more, quicker and quicker, they are ungrateful.
Respect should go both ways. They do owe us an explanation
I think they should just swallow their "pride" and accept that people won't think any lesser of them when they release the tracks. Aphex is still considered to be one of the greatest IDM artists of all time, even though some of his unreleased stuff is bad.
"Because the fans only want what's up to scratch"...One word can refute this: "no". Why do you think people want Old Tunes or any other tapes so much? Are they "up to scratch"? It's just BoC dicking around. Why do people want that The Quarrymen record so much one guy paid somewhere around a hundred thousand quid for it? Why do people even want unreleased records? Yeah, sure, they're rare, but don't you think people want to hear the unreleased stuff, even though it may be bad?
To me, part of the appeal of OT/R35TT/Boc Maxima is that they really show the way the band evolved over the years. The unreleased stuff is pretty simple, but that's what makes it so charming!!
"They aren't an "ok" release band". It would be an unofficial, free release for the fans!! NO ONE will think of them as actual releases. People are not stupid...
Also, please remember that the brothers haven't only released "complete albums". There were lots of singles, remixes and songs for different albums also.

Sorry, we're going to have to agree to disagree. They really don't owe us a thing.

It's not about that, it's about their discography being a work of art in and of itself. And even if that isn't the case, that still doesn't mean you or anyone else have a right to hear unreleased work. We have no right to that. Just because RDJ is OK with releasing a bunch of tracks on soundcloud (most of which are average at best, don't get me wrong I love his music, but he has no quality control at all), doesn't mean anyone else should be obliged to.

Yeah, I like that stuff man. But they don't. They never wanted it in the public ear. Just because we want it and love it, doesn't mean we have a right to it. They are not morally in the wrong here.
Are they "up to scratch"?
No. Which is why despite liking a lot of it, I don't care too much either way what happens. I'd prefer new music. But that is beside the point I guess. Even if I desperately wanted the BOCset, it doesn't mean they are doing me a disservice for not releasing it. They've given me lots of amazing music already, how can I say they are wrong for not giving me more? That'd be taking the piss.

Re: It would be nice is BOC took one from the page of AT
Wow some of you really do worship BoC on a scary level, so much so it's completely blurred your emotions.
Wtf are you on about when you actually think and write about your wishes for them not to go online and upload a ton of old tracks? 'cause some BoC are so precious to you and your own little universe it would be a bad thing and spoil your little pretentious bubble?
Aphex archive dump is something special (and some of you are moaning about that lol, and you need to pinch yourself or start taking happy pills to think that is a bad thing). I just think some you don't like the fact your noses have been put out of joint by it. And are making excuses for feeling a bit sorry for yourselves.
I think perhaps you need to have a bit more faith.
(ps I don't want to sound aggressive I just can handle being pessimistic about stuff I love)

Yes well you are being bloody aggressive. And you are misinterpreting me. I am not getting angry, or somehow worshiping them. I just respect their wishes as artists, and find it mildly frustrating when people demand music from them. I am allowed to express my opinion on this matter correct?
I'm taking some time out from this and letting things cool down. You don't even know me Warphead, don't take more from my posts than is actually there.

Quality control is something many, many people have apparently forgotten or perhaps more accurately, didn't understand to begin with.
But why is that a problem? Why not let people decide for themselves what's good and what isn't, instead of only letting them hear what the artist personally prefers? Many of my favorite artists (e.g. Merzbow, The Legendary Pink Dots, Nurse With Wound, Current 93, etc.) are the ones who've released everything they've made over their career, and that approach allows a much more intimate scope of the artists' works. I don't understand why you consider prolificacy to be a bad thing. It makes getting into the artist a bit of a challenge, but that's what makes it fun. Artists who only have a short discography are a lot more boring to discover.
jcnporter wrote:I've said all this before, the whole 'unreleased tracks' thing was, pre-internet, a record company cash-in to squeeze the last drop out of established acts, some artists were happy with that, some weren't.
It's only become established with the internet and the supposed death of the album. Some people seem to have forgotten the point of the album as a concept, a story, a self-contained piece of work.
If you want to find a band that still cares and understands about the album as a complete piece of work, there's two brothers from Scotland that make electronic music and call themselves....
Unreleased tracks are unreleased for a reason. For me it's pretty simple - they're like the pieces of paper on the artist's desk or files on their hard drive - private and nothing to do with anyone else.
There is no obligation for an artist to release any of their private property for any of us to view. We should perhaps mind our own business, like we do with everyone else that we don't know.
You forgot the part where the entire idea of an album was invented by record companies.

"It's not about that, it's about their discography being a work of art in and of itself." Even if you think so, the tracks would not be a part of their discography!
Yes, we have no right to hear it, but it would be just the nice thing to do, that is all
I wouldn't say most of them are average, some, yes, but there are some great tracks here and there, like Fork Rave or 7 lsb [slo]
The brothers are not obliged to anything, it would just be the nice thing to do and there are more "for" arguments than "against"
How come they never wanted it in the public ear if they wanted to release the tapes in 2005?
Getting the unreleased tracks- I'm not even talking about OT/R35TT/Boc Maxima would be equivalent to getting new music

I've a better idea. Why not let the artist decide themselves? I'll take BOC's artistic judgement over Joe Bloggs anyday.
It's the sense of entitlement that bemuses me.

As of this day we all know Richard is king!
Perhaps BOC now need to prove their mettle.....
I've had enough drunken fun for the day, have a good weekend!

Let's cut to the chase. You just can't handle the fact that Richard is the bee's knees.
I still love BOC for their attitude, it's cool, and brilliant and unique. I just don't get the notion why some of you seem to of convinced yourself that BOC being really, really mean to you is a fantastic thing!

I'll take an artist like µ-Ziq whose discography is very patchy over an artist who refuses to release the best material anyday.

Not many people here have that sense of entitlement. "Yes, we have no right to hear it, but it would be just the nice thing to do" isn't entitlement, it's a valid point.

That's not how it comes across from some though

Re: It would be nice is BOC took one from the page of AT
As I said, respect should go both ways. MDG said BoC would release the previously unheard material, and they didn't. We can only speculate as to why, but one of the main theories is that BoC preferred to behave like children and quit the idea altogether, therefore punishing all of us for the doings of some guy and refusing to basically take our money
Seriously, why do you think it's okay to let them treat you that way? First it was "yeah they'll do it", now it's 10 years later and we still have no idea as to what has happened! We had to wait over a year if I'm correct for the Hi Scores repress and even then they released it with a glitch in one of the songs, it's too tiring for them to even perform TH live in America after all those years without a live performance (you guys seriously think they put any effort into the campaign?) so they had some guy press the play button. I guess the desert is too hot for them, but let the fans sit it out.
You guys, this is not entitlement, this is common sense. Please have some dignity and recognize that BoC have not been treating their fans very good. When was the last time they got in touch with the fans? Probably back when Warp did that contest for the coolest music video, and even then they just sent signed copies of the Geogaddi CD.
Please acknowledge that it's not like they're not messiahs who have been doing it all for free. I think most of the people here have all of their albums, so we've paid for them. Music industry is a bit different than other businesses so you just can't treat people like: here's our product, give us your money, ok thank you. It's just more personal. And if the brothers spend all of their time in the studio, that's 100% fine, but just give us some sign that you're alive once in a while. It's not like they immediately have to go to every interview everywhere or write daily facebook posts, but do a live show, maybe post some photos of their super-secret cave, I dunno, there are so many things they can do
