Big Giant Circles is a pretty cool artist. Not entirely chiptune, but still nicely integrated.

I've only recently heard of chiptune (I've never owned a playstation or games consoles believe it or not!) when looking up the recent Minecraft Soundtrack on discogs a few weeks ago. The artisit c418 makes chiptune. As it happens I wasn't so impressed with the Volume Alpha version but thought the Volume Beta was better.

Ah, yes, C418 is one of my favorite artists. He's not a full on chiptune artist (he does lots of ambient and experimental stuff, too), but some of his albums like "one" feature a lot of chiptune, like Neither of the Minecraft soundtracks have that much chiptune in them, except for the music discs like "cat" ( and "ward" (

That's a pretty illuminating interview. It's interesting to see how the game came out as something put together rather randomly, because that's exactly how Minecraft is. It also annoys me that other sandbox games seem to be drawing on that influence way too heavily; Starbound is an excellent game, but its soundtrack is so depressing that I had to stop playing once and felt bad for the rest of the day. Shit, guys.

Minecraft specifically is just so random; you can’t predict anything at all, ever. For example, I can’t make music that makes any sense to the environment. You might go down into a cave. And I could make ‘cave’ music for that, ’cuz you’re in a cave. The problem is, I don’t know if it’s a cave, I’ve just assumed that. For all I know it could be a player-made house.

Yet Terraria handled that problem just fine...
