What I mean by outside is, just be careful online. Next time you are at concert, a shopping mall or a crowded area, take notice, and look at how many folks are stuck inside technology instead of the outside world around them. It's tragic!

There'r much worse things to worry, like hunger, poverty, criminality, you should at least be ok with that, you can still afford to sit and relax in front of your computer at your home and post in the forums. Still there's a lot things to do besides, people tripping around the world for 80 days ! If you happy, then do it, if you happy with sitting at home and writing BOC letters, I'm ok with that.

1)Corporate media was designed to influence the masses, and actually creates thoughts you normally wouldn't have.
2)Society is too obsessed with other people's lives, and it's not healthy.
3)Boards of Canada are artists, so they most likely want the music to speak for itself.

3) Their music is largely instrumental. It often states nothing and is all open to interpretation. BOC don't have any clear manifesto. They are masters of vague.

Disagree, to me boc feels honest in that they do and perfectionism in their craft, so I choose to accept it, without thinking how much serious I am in doing this.

I may have said this elsewhere but the thing with Cage wasnt as simple as 'hurr im copyrighting silence' it was that the timing of it was 4 minutes 33 or 273 seconds... -273 degrees C being Absolute Zero - hence the silence. But also it was a performance where the orchestra had a score consisting of pages of rests which yes, theyd turn. You would hear the noise of that, bumping of instruments, coughing, shuffling of feet. Even in silence there is activity, there are signs of life.

lets be accurate. you could also easily interpret the "mysterious hocus pocus" as their simple choice to not be completely open to the public in a way outside the music. BOC may seem to be mysterious only in relation to the majority of artists whose personality appears as prominent publicly as the music itself.

this thread kind of speaks as though they aren't two people with family and friends, fears, doubts, responsibilities... if you take their silences personally it can feel like their hocus pocus "is" gimmicky.

as to Peacock Tail, just want to add, yes, I usually think of BOC as Music band; basically, Why they released such album, how they managed to create such sounds and When possible new release will come up, and how it gonna look like. Even the stories about their old unreleased material not interested me.

Also a little offtopic, just watched Hideo Kojima's making of Metal Gear Solid 4 and was amazed how much goind on during the making process, and we fans are just a small part of a bigger picture. I just leave this here;

But let's not kid ourselves that this isn't anything more than mere contractually obligated PR.

Perhaps you can admire their creative use of marketing strategy and the longevity it gives each product. Two years on and people are still looking for clues in TH. This is keeping a product alive for two years with just one singular campaign. Clever stuff but it is only 'sales technique'.

From 'Paul is dead' to 'British Gas Tell Sid' to the M&S Christmas adverts... it's just another strategy to keep a product in people's conciousness.

Kellogs Cornflakes use this tool. It's nothing special. No one thinks of the adverts when they eat cereal. In the same way nobody thinks about cosecha codes when they listen to TH. Thinking about cosecha codes might make you dig out your copy of TH though.

When BOC played Geogaddi in 6 churches around the world, did that change anybody's life who wasn't present?

Did this have any impact on everybody who put the vinyl on the turntable and listened at home for the first time? No.

But we know all about it. Why? Marketing.

Is Geogaddi any good? Yes.

Is it good because they played it in 6 churches first? No.

It's the music that matters.

How many people followed the TH Cosecha stunt and then didn't purchase TH afterwards? How many said I really enjoyed that campaign but I hate BOC's music so I'm not going to buy it?

We may be misunderstanding each other. I feel the mystery resonates in the music itself. BoC seems to be so committed to the music itself that they don't feel a need to overexpose their band publicly – that creates mystery, yet it starts from the music.

BOC's music had me listening attentively before I knew of any details about their history. I have never heard about the Geogaddi churches, nor have I ever put any effort into deciphering codes... I've only put effort into listening consistently and without preconceptions.

So, of course it's the music that matters! BoC is a band! Good for them that they made an attempt to turn the marketing thing into a game... I had fun trying to follow it. They are signed to a major label, it seems obvious to me that they'd be expected to try to sell the music... something most people never buy anyway.

Many people actually "buy" music, but in a different sense. When you play an official video clip without adblock, you get an ad and the artist gets money for it. When you listen to Spotify, artists also make money. Most people have switched to digital, and they pay indirectly.

The music is one thing, the band is the other. There are many artists who have created mysterious music and are not mysterious themselves. BoC are regular people, just like us. There is nothing more on the Cosecha website.

The new website is still not here yet. For some reason, they don't want us to hear their music samples from the old webpages in good quality even though it's really good. BoC are really confusing in the bad sense of the word. They just don't make much sense. That's how they seem mysterious. They complain about how people are immersed in technology, well that's a nice way of turning the tables! Let me quote MDG..."BOC are never 'not working', they're always in the studio". Has something changed that they can put out albums like Tomorrow's Harvest and make scary tunes about technology?

I've never heard about that connection. It is known that Cage often used the I Ching as a compositional aid, and the 4'33'' may come from there; especially since it's divided in three movements of different durations. And yeah, it wasn't copyrighting silence; it's an actual music piece and it's meant to be performed.

The scores I've seen have a single page with no proper staff, just the words: "Movement 1: Tacet. Movement 2: Tacet. Movement 3: Tacet." But you're right, watching an actual performance of the piece is a lot more powerful than one could expect; to watch a musician not do what he's "expected" to do is very odd and uncomfortable.

Also regarding the copyright thing: only once there was a copyright issue regarding 4'33'', but that was only because an album by Mike Batt credited a silent track to John Cage as a lighthearted joke, and Cage's estate objected. If I recall correctly, the case was settled out of court and it involved money going to charity, so all is fine.

Actually, I think we're more aligned in our thinking than these posts would indicate. You too seem to dwell on the importance of the music and it's evocations rather than some inutile past-time.

With regards to TH, what is the point of all the mystery around it anyway? They said it's loaded with patterns, subliminals and clues etc, but BOC never actually say which findings are correct or incorrect. Which findings were intentionally placed by BOC and which were contrived like a Roscharch test subject would conclude?

When nothing is validated by the creators and the artistic intention is continuously misread, confused or ignored, what or who does it serve? Correct findings are reduced to having the same importance as incorrect ones, but ultimately it adds up to a very big loud nothing.

Why don't BOC ever have the inclination (or even the balls?) to say 'these were our intentions' and 'this was our vision'? Might this be to secretly gloss over an actual lack of focus? i.e. 'We'll throw some tracks together with a similar production value, we'll say it's a concept that's littered with codes, patterns, etc and let everyone else join up the dots?'

If this isn't the case, then it's not worth taking 8 years to make an album either because no one ever fully gets BOCs intent. (Unless they claim that the music is only made to please themselves anyway.... oh yeah? why did you release it then?)

I wish they'd just make music and stop the dicking about.

no need to trip out over all those projections – plus they have been clear about the intention in the interviews regarding the record.

and ghost, ecto, it is a mess. most threads are (half of them seem to be about listing favorite tracks in competitive polls that are changing all the time anyway). this happens because people really love the music.
