Thinking Out Loud

Post by Jango9 »

-If Acid Memories was a caterpillar, would it make its cocoon and emerge years later as The Campfire Headphase?

-Why is it so cumbersome to get an account on BoCPages? I can think of dozens of useful edits but have no account to do them with.

-Once I had this dream where Mike and Marcus were doing a live show at the Blossom Music Center or something very close to it (I saw Steely Dan there last summer, excellent show!). The dream started off with a long walk from a grassy parking lot to the actual amphitheater at sundown, and the show didn't start until it was already pretty dark. Mike and Marcus were somewhat out-of-character though, like talking to the audience and whatnot. At the beginning Mike (or Marcus?) said something along the lines of "Um, hello, we're gonna play some songs for you tonight. Some of 'em you might recognize, some of 'em, if you do recognize them then you're very naughty." I racked my brain for several minutes that morning to try and recall the set list, it went pretty much like this:
1. Triangles and Rhombuses (long intro)
1.5. It's Too Orangey (you could clearly tell they were doing this one by hand, it slowed down near the end)
2. Cold Earth
3. A short interlude that I didn't recognize
4. A longer track that I didn't recognize (Sort of like a faster Mansel with shades of Tomorrow's Harvest)
5. Skimming Stones
6. Alpha And Omega
7. A ~30 second interlude that sounded like Sundown mixed with the end of Kaini Industries, but as fuzzy as A13
At this point, the show stopped for a moment before Marcus (or Mike?) walked up to the mic and said something like "We'll be back in a moment, gotta go get my fuckin' bass" followed by him running out the back door. In the intervening time Mike decided to kill all the amphitheater lights save for a few white searchlights noodling about in the audience. He starts to loop Circle while waiting for Marcus to come back, occasionally triggering samples in the background. Eventually Marcus got back and the room lit up again. At this point the set got back on track:
8. Dayvan Cowboy
9. Unknown Interlude, if I recall correctly it was something like A10 mixed with Under The Coke Sign
10. Another short interlude like track, very heavy bass guitar from Marcus mixed with low, droning synths and a vocal sample towards the end that I couldn't really understand. (Remmy Kid?)
One of the brothers steps up to the mic at this point and says something to the effect of "We're gonna have an old friend of hours join us for this one. He's in the audience, you know who you are 'cause we talked about it before the show, come on up here!" A curtain pulls up to reveal a drum kit, which the guy (Chris?) comes up and sits at. The other brother steps up to the mic and says "This one's called...
11. Wouldn't You Like To Be Free?" *cue almost ear-shattering cheering from the audience*
The brothers go back and talk to the guy on the drums, then one comes up to the mic and says "Okay, he's gonna stick around for one more. We used to play with him, in case you couldn't tell. Anyways, here's one you all really wanna hear for some reason:
12. Infinite Lines Of Colourful Sevens" *cue even more cheering followed by what sounded like a longer A08*
13. An unknown track that sounded like Red Sky Night
14. An unknown track that sounded like Cryonaut's "Halcyon"
"Well, this has been our longest set ever, thank you all for coming out, don't worry, we've got one, well, 2 more for you!" says one of the brothers.
15. Bocuma
16. Roygbiv (longer version, not the Alphaquest mix though)
After a Magic Window's length of silence and the lights staying off:
E1. Echus
E2. Nothing Is Real
E3. Unknown outrolude

-This will go nicely alongside Play By Numbers in my collection of albums with terrifying babies on the cover:

-That's all, no more thinking for tonight
If The Campfire Headphase was a butterfly, would Acid Memories be the caterpillar?
Spoiler: show
Unfortunately I have no clue lmao. But while you're here, go ahead and check out some of my tunes! You might dig 'em and stuff!

I had a dream where BoC played live about two months ago. Think it stemmed from hearing that there was a "rave in the cave" (not the ones we were by, as it turns out) last Twoism meetup. Remember it so clearly. Post-TH meet there continues. Can't tell you what year it was. Most everyone asleep. Around a quarter to four in the morning, people start waking others up because there's all this sound coming from inside the caves. Everyone awake heads in. There's like this big tent inside with a lot of light coming from it, way too big of a tent to actually fit in there in reality. Inside it is BoC. Played at least a two hour show. Then the screens they had in there prompted everyone to leave the cave and nobody did. Eventually one of the two said something about the fact that they were coming back out but that they needed everyone to leave so that their mechanical guy could take all the equipment away (apparently this makes sense even in this location within a dream). They started playing some really annoying song and everyone left. Eventually they did come out and one person who was asleep still was woken up by the two of them saying "you're having a dream...go back to sleep" or something like that. Then I woke up.

Cannot recall the "setlist" for "Live @ Winspit somehow" except for You Could Feel the Sky, which I'm pretty sure they ended with. I can recall though that they said absolutely nothing other than "LEAVE THE CAVE PLEASE", so your fake show was probably a bit more pleasing and about a thousand times more technically possible.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

Funnily enough, I was actually out in a park late at night with my laptop when I originally wrote this thread (Luckily this isn't one of those places where it'd get stolen in 5 seconds if I attempted that).

I've just noticed that my dream was probably inaccurate for another reason (besides the blatantly obvious). On the A Few Old Tunes sleeve, it says that Mike did all the live drums and that the tracks were mostly from 1991-1995, so maybe Mike would have actually been the one drumming rather than that other guy?

I'm putting far too much thought into this. :P

HEY EVERYONE, TIME TO DO SOME MORE THINKING!

-What if the sample in P.C. is actually a field recording of some Hexagon Sun folks getting it on by a waterfall?
-How different would things be today if BoC Maxima actually ended up being the debut album rather than MHTRTC?
- Would songs like M9 and Skimming Stones be remembered more as being among "The Classics"?
- Would we be searching high and low for a high quality tape rip of something like Rue The Whirl or Kaini Industries?
- Would the next album have looked something like this?:
- 1. Echus
- 2. Flute Frum Thing
- 3. An Eagle In Your Mind
- 4. Sixtyten (ATP version)
- 5. ATP-06
- 6. 1969
- 7. Amo Bishop Roden
- 8. Spiro
- 9. Warp10-03
- 10. Telephasic Workshop/The Smallest Weird Number
- 11. Julie And Candy (Old version)
- 12. ATP-09
- 13. Noatak
- 14. Point Hope
- 15. Warp10-06
- 16. Happy Cycling
- 17. ATP-11
- 18. In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country
- 19. Triangles And Rhombuses/It's Too Orangey
- 20. (Hidden Track)
-Would that mean the live shows would be completely different as well?
-Does anyone else think the Play By Numbers baby face looks similar to a certain frame of David's face in the movie A.I.?
-What do you think some of the tracks that they might have not released for being "Too Weird" would sound like?
-Could From One Source All Things Depend serve as sort of a final farewell to the children's voices in BoC's songs?
-Why did anyone think they could get away with passing off well-known songs like Kaini Industries and 1969 as being Acid Memories tracks and have people fall for it?
-Why did people actually fall for it?
-Is Iraq Says actually some sort of stealthy political commentary?
-You should all totally read the official BoC timeline written by PIC and Andrew Wilson, it sheds a lot of light on a lot of things.
-Also, Alpha and Omega sounds really cool at 33 1/3rpm

I wonder how many of their track titles are references that we'll never get...

Davie Addison sounds like Bachs Cello Suite No. 1

Diving Station is terrifying, when played backwards.

Julie and Candy is about this (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candace_Newmaker).
Out and about.

The artist bbs section is quite interesting to read through also! There's even a user who claims their friend owns Twoism and Acid Memories :P

'1987: at another all-weekend music marathon, michael consumed a massive amount of Pro-Plus and performed a six-hour drum solo onstage from 1am to 7am.'

My friend consumed a packet of this when he was sixteen and all he did was shit himself.

Julie and Candy are just a couple of friends of the brothers, the guy that posted a photo of the boc maxima casette said that, plus there is a Julie in the cover of OTV2, i think it's the same...

I often wonder this as well, and I think the answer is yes. They are both top quality tracks, particularly SS imo, which I think would fit in among all of their other 'classics' from the MHTRTC era. Context is a funny thing.

This is the first time I'm reading that biography and found this interesting part.

1986: michael formed a new band, this time with a full line-up of drums, bass, guitars, vocals. once played a cover of "L.A." by The Fall, who spookily turned up eleven years later on a Skam compilation "0161", Skam being the first label to release a Boards of Canada EP.

Which track is it on the compilation? I understand it's not BoC, but still it would be interesting to hear how their band sounded back then.

So earlier today I started thinking again (Uh oh), this time about the live tracks.

-Why is Warp10 Track 3 consistently mislabeled as The Color Of The Fire? It sounds nothing like it, in fact the closest thing to it in the BoC catalog is A Moment Of Clarity
-And for that matter, why is Warp10 listed as having 7 tracks when The Smallest Weird Number made its first appearance after Telephasic Workshop?
-Aquarius with the extended intro is really awesome. Also, this version seems to lack the ghost-like screaming from V3, but it also has the "I'm Listening", would that technically make this version 2.5?
-I think there might be some church organ-type instruments buried in the mix of Warp10-06, but that could also just be the music from the original sample. Can anyone shed some light?
-Gotta wonder how much of Warp10-07 was written in advance and how much was made up on the spot
-Either Mike or Marcus mentioned in an interview between the Lighthouse and ATP that "The last time we played live was a disaster, the monitors exploded in the middle of the set". Could this be the reason why Sixtyten is incomplete in the bootleg or could there actually have been a couple more songs before it? (Then again, it also sounds like the beginning of IABPOITC is missing)
-Lighthouse 1969 sounds better than the Geogaddi version IMO
-Same for Amo Bishop Roden, the percussion in the second half has much more impact to it.
-Echus can be sped up by about 200% at least and still sound cool. Not to mention what happens when you slow it down.
-ATP-06 sounds a lot like the beginning of a live performance of The Seal And The Hydrophone by Biosphere at Paradiso 2000
-ATP-11 sounds nearly identical both forwards and backwards. Still doesn't really sound like A is to B as B is to C though.
-A while back I mentioned that maybe ATP-07/Noatak(?) was going to end up on the second album before 9/11 happened and sent it in a different direction (I think someone said the original theme was gonna be a submarine journey?). While this is highly unlikely, remember that Smokes Quantity existed as far back as Twoism and The Smallest Weird Number is at least as old as 2000, possibly much earlier depending on the unknown date when the R35TT was compiled.
If The Campfire Headphase was a butterfly, would Acid Memories be the caterpillar?
