Tomorrow's Harvest - How do you rate it now?

LOL my trollmeter pegged w/his comment too! Serious note though, you've really dug into the album w/little flattery getting in the way. I didn't realize how much, you hit on some great talking points I think. I wouldn't have ever put a finger on the flow disruption myself. All the lead-up to the release had me believing it was going to be a highly theme-bound album, so on the 1st listen I think the flow disruptions registered w/me but just waaay in the back of my mind. And I dismissed them quickly, I assumed they were part of the message. I obviously missed something there. And you've got me thinking I probably missed more. Ex. could it be that they spent too much time working on this album...like they should have just stopped at a point before that? Or maybe they tried to carry the theme for too long a period of creative time, making gaps they couldn't resolve later?

I think I haven't even listened to it more than 20 times, whereas for their other material I probably have gone over 60 to 100 times or something. For some reason this album doesn't really grab me like the others did, but every now and then I remember to give TH another play I really like it. I just seem to forget to play this album, weird.

I think I haven't even listened to it more than 20 times, whereas for their other material I probably have gone over 60 to 100 times or something. For some reason this album doesn't really grab me like the others did, but every now and then I remember to give TH another play I really like it. I just seem to forget to play this album, weird.

I have to say that when it was released, I was initially a little disappointed, but it grew on me quite quickly. I'd place it above Campfire Headphase - just - despite CH sounding more like their early work. Artists mature, and things don't stay the same, so you have to expect things to change a bit (although I'd love some more of MHTRTC and Geogaddi!). I'm a big fan of film soundtracks/film scores, and TH has its moments in this regard, particularly White Cyclosa. I love Semena Mertvykh - so moody and creepy. Anyone wanting more stuff like this track, try Thomas Koner's work.

9 years later and I understand Tomorrow's Harvest now. This entire experience just, I don't know, I recovered from COVID very recently and I put the record on tonight. It's been my go-to record for comfort since 2020, but even then it didn't fully resonate with me. Tonight? Everything changed. Every frequency resonated with the space I'd been in since symptoms came on. Every. Single. Second. I've been in the camp of "it's an okay record, but I have to be in the mood for it" camp since its release, but not anymore. My God.

When I first listened to TH on the livestream "transmission," it blew me away and sat as my #2 BOC album, just behind Geogaddi. Tracks like Jacquard Causeway took the vintage BOC sound in entirely new direction, some of the tracks, like Cold Earth and Palace Posy, had the driving beats I'd missed on TCH, and the incredibly lush and layered production at the forefront of tracks like Sick Times and Split Your Infinities contained a mind-boggling array of secrets and messages that underscored the themes of the album, while giving me a lot to think about and come back to.

Now, the album has only grown on me more through the last 9 years, becoming a soundtrack to the urban decay, civil unrest, state surveillance and repression, climate disaster, and pandemic I've lived through. It's not often you hear an album that's actually more relevant almost a decade after its release. Now, I'd say TH is tied with Geogaddi, but I've listened to it more frequently in recent years, so as of right now I rank it as my top BOC record. 10/10.

It's a toss up between Geogaddi and TH, but I know for sure that I've listened to TH way, way more times than any other BoC album. It's more or less been a constant resident in my car's CD player since it came out. That has to mean something.

This album came out a bad time for me. BoC was slowly fading into the background as I was getting into other artists and genres, plus I was young and stupid, much of what I thought back then doesn't even matter now (and probably shouldn't). It didn't take until 2020 for this album to really sink into me. The illness, the war, the destruction (both societal and natural), the death, it all made sense at that point. Geogaddi may always be a 10/10 for me (as well as my favorite album of all time, period), but Tomorrow's Harvest sometimes gives MHTRTC a run for its money, if the mood's right. Driving through the mountains of California on an isolated highway and seeing the rivers nearly completely empty and dry can surely set that mood. You just feel so alone as "Sundown" comes on, followed by the lamenting melancholy of "New Seeds" and "Come To Dust", then the utter despair of "Semena Mertvykh".
