BoC Fakes

I think it's about time we produced a definitive list of all the BoC fakes we know about. You know, get all the ugly ducklings in a row so that everyone knows what to look for and stops getting fooled by fakes that have long since been debunked.

This is a good start, though it appears it's been a while since it's been updated:

Here's a few loose tracks that I've come across before that aren't listed:
-"Sandrail" (and its associated fake album Pollyanna Siren)
-"1969 Alternate Take" (Slightly slower 1969 with extra synths layered over the beginning. Sounds homemade.)
-"Sesame Street" (Mislabeled B09)
-"The Children's Prison" (Mislabeled Poppy Seed reprise, the title seems to come from a fan video which used it)
-"Numerator" (Mislabeled B04, has appeared in various forms)
-"Magic Timeline"
-"Ascen"
-"Sarequ"
-"Reforth Danport"
-"LV Nuova"
-"Susan's Lungs" (which was also distributed as a Pink Floyd fake in the late 90s)

I've seen 2 different fake albums claiming to be Acid Memories, the first of which was just Paracat/Cupz's interpretation with different ID3 tags. The second one was a mix of songs from other BoC releases, I believe it started off with Kaini Industries as Duffy and 1969 as Growing Hand. This particular fake seems to have fooled a substantial amount of people.

There's also a fake Closes Vol. 1 consisting of the following:
1. Powerline Misfortune
2. She Is P (You can hear Mansel fading out at the beginning, clearly from OTV1)
3. Mukinabaht
4. A04
5. A06 (which might actually be 5D, however this version is missing the final couple of measures)
6. Unknown (davefrom2001?)
7. Finity
8. Trails (with sloppily added percussion that doesn't actually sync with the music)
9. King Of Carnival (last note of I Love U still intact because the fakers didn't realize it wasn't part of the song)
10. B06
11. Mushyz
12. B02
13. Jimbo Rehearsing
14. Roygbiv (some fan remix, not particularly impressive but also not unpleasant)
15. Hiscores
16. B14 (complete with left-in fade out from Davie Addison)
17. B20

And a fake Play By Numbers which consists of:
1. Fly In The Pool
2. BMX Track
3. A08
4. David Came To Mahana'im (This guy was fooled into making a cover of it as Numerator)
5. We've Started Up

Anyone else got more to add?

BTW, I think Sandrail is great with reverb, even if it's not BoC.

If you ask me, it's better slowed down to half speed. Maybe do both for the ultimate Sandrail experience?

i faked closes but i honestly was in touch with a guy that said some of the tracks was actual ones.
one track i did i seen someone pos a youtube of it saying it was great but i was so busy i couldn't reply and lost track of it and i think it was you jango.

Were you thinking of another confirmation? That one was FreddE getting MDG's response about the 'How Will I Know' remix not being Hell Interface. I don't remember any of us able to confirm Sandrail's source, at least not the one posted to last.fm that you used to be able to listen to. I really liked it so I dug and kept an eye out, lemme know if I missed something.

Oh yeah I remember that. I was hoping they'd dig up more in there than we did, but I didn't see them finding anything new. Jango, your call here on Sandrail, I like what you're trying to do, but I wouldn't include it in any list of confirmed fakes unless someone's got a more firm indication of it's source. I'll put what I've seen on it in the other thread, I found the other one you started.

I really like this. It's got all the BoC qualities. Wouldn't sound out of place on the R35TT, maybe if it faded into the next song near the end.

He started wondering what some of the songs on Acid Memories would sound like, his curiousity put his amazing skills to work and, by popular demand from us twoismers, ended up putting together the whole album. I'm incredibly glad he did because it's absolutely amazing.

I just wanted to make sure that was clear. Hendrik is not the type of guy to deceive people for no good reason. He has more respect for musical art than anyone I know. I hope that no one out there thinks poorly of him due to misunderstanding whether this is a purposeful fake or simply satisfying curiosity and then sharing it with friends.




Also, The Children's Prison was a fan video by David Ahuja of Amoebalabs. The video itself is not mislabeled, but it looks like people thought that the video name was the song name and so took it upon themselves to mislabel it and then share the mislabeled song with others due to ignorance.

Speaking of Acid Memories, I was just searching for "Boards Of Canada Acid Memories" on Youtube to see if there's any new fakes up there, and lo and behold:
Just uploaded earlier today. I have very little reason to believe this is real, especially since the video is the same as the video for that alternate Julie And Candy (just flipped upside down and filtered to hell and back). Still, I'd like to hear what you all have to make of it.

I think the biggest clue that it's illegitimate is the fact that the Pollyanna Siren artwork is a badly done photoshop which had already appeared elsewhere on the 'net. BoC would never do anything like that for artwork.

I saw that too today when i was looking at videos containing BoC in them by filtering by date.

If its fake i'd really like to know who's the Original Artist.

The channel's name is a song title which is an unreleased song from neutral Milk Hotel, the kinda group who do guitard music, my guess is that this is a fake and is actually one of Neutral Milk hotel's tune. Will have to dig a little bit more in that.

Nice tune Jango, I like it. Is Swimming In Your Speaker your new artist name? It's a bit corny imo. I'd also never have noticed that video was a filtered version of the J&C one without you pointing it out.

I didn't make this, you can tell because I've absolutely no idea how to play any of the instruments in there.
