My contender for "most beautiful" obviously depends on mood and countless other things (as it does with anyone else), but for years I've been hung up on The Band's "Tears of Rage".

Bowie's death reminded me to come back in here since last I checked, my opinion has yet to change.

I've linked that before (which broadly is more than the riff alone), I've linked the Reznor composition that as of now still utilizes it the best in my opinion, but I've yet to link the Mogwai composition (I think?...which btw is literally just the riff over and over again melodically), so I will do that now and then stop talking (thought I already had but then Bowie died) about this in particular:



The most prominently recurring progression in Bowie's Crystal Japan is strangely transcendent to me. It is, bar none, the most beautiful series of four notes I have and probably will ever hear in my life, amazingly defying all logic I hold regarding music with its raw simplicity.

Whatever is being played above or below it is irrelevant as long as it works.

To mention something else finally (and I'm sorry but come on, thread title is a tall order and I would assume Basinki was already mentioned), here's something I hold very highly on the "beautiful" list but could not consider a contender for "most" beautiful. Same goes for almost anything else strictly electronic and most alt-rock, which I could share but not explain [the reason why A Wolf at the Door by Radiohead is beautiful, as an example] in words.

Cascade by Future Sound Of London, we used to have a projection screen telly, that you pulled out on rollers and actually opened, MTV was new at the time, and FSOL came on, with the video for Cascade and I remember it being so beautiful to watch.

Thinking back it was bitty, pixelated almost, low-res yet the beauty of the music video shone through, a truly beautiful song.
