One Room Movies

I saw Circle yesterday, some netflix movie I saw on not-netflix I really quite enjoyed. It put me on a severe marathon watching these minimalisctic one-set movies. Youknow the type, where a movie plays out pretty much in a single room shrowded in mystery. Cube is the classic example thereof and Circle quite a nice addition.

The marathon as it played out so far, in order (seen most of these before the marathon commenced):
Circle
12 Angry Men (made me cry!)
Five characters in search of an exit (twilight zone, not a movie but it pretty much inspired the "genre")
Cube/Cube2: Hypercube/Cube Zero
The Killing Room
Exam

And gonna try and watch all of those today.
Can twoism recommend any others?


Also, I guess you could say the h8full eight is like that as well when all the set-peices are in place.

I dunno why we don't have a film thread. It'd just be easier than having all these smaller threads.

But anyway - some of my picks aren't necessarily rooms, but more confined spaces;

that new 10 Cloverfield Lane film is alright and is following the concept of a confined space scenario.
The french horror À l'intérieur, once again, more of a confined space dealy rather than one room.
Also that great low budget sci fi film Coherence, also This is Not a Film (perhaps - not in the vein of what you were talking about), and Locke (if a car can be considered a "room").

It's really about the mood the director chooses to set, and the conceit of the film.

Like Exam is centered around a very basic plot device, I bet the writer came up with the idea for the film before writing it.
Actually I guarantee it, due to the film fucking up the ending.
What did you think of it, Flamendrikupz? I was on a hunt for not one room type films, but films with a very simple conceit - like a simple yet intriguing premise which the film spools out from. Like the film Grand Piano, where during a live concert, a pianist learns that if he messes up a single note of his performance, he will get shot infront of the audience.
That's it, the film goes from there.
Or the film White Dog, where a woman finds a dog who has been trained to attack black people.

I love that type of b-movie type concept. Can make for really smart intriguing pictures if done well.

God, 12 Angry Men... what a fantastic film. When I saw this thread title the first one I thought of was Rope by Hitchcock, great film. Classic suspense-laden Hitchcock thriller.

That's a great one, as well as Rear Window.

And Lifeboat as well, the one shot entirely on a boat. I haven't seen it, though.

That scene where the maid is slowly........clearing.........the...........table.....

Hitchcock was a genuine genius.

What did you think of it, Flamendrikupz?

I liked it. I saw the ending coming as soon as all the characters where properly introduced and movies like that are pretty hard to end well, but enjoyed it regardless. I especially thought that because the chaos was caused by a silly job and not a life/death situation made it all the more gritty to me.

Just saw Devil and House of 9.
House of 9 was a bit shit. I always love Dennis Hopper in anything and the ending was "hehe oh shit" but it was mostly shitty.
Devil was pretty good, some nice claustrophobic vibes, visuals and some things I really didn't see coming.

Don't take the one room concept to literally, obviously some of these are mansions, buildings or even islands, I just really liked the ring of the title. I guess confinement is the red thread here. Specifically forced character interaction through confined spaces. I'm not completely sure why I'm in this mood, but I'm still cruising it.

I haven't watched Rope yet, I'll check it out! Rear window I like a lot, hitchcock can't go wrong imo. I'll check out your suggestions 2, TTK!

À l'intérieur was a bit to horrible (read: real) for me to enjoy, I get how it's a good movie though.

I dub The Genius Club to be the worst one on the list, but it was so bad it got pretty enjoyable. It was a good example of what I meant and how to do it completely wrong with horrible plot, writing, acting, lighting and photography. House of 9 is a close second.

Twenty movies in a few days. I wish I counted how many movies I've watched in my life. Must be in the thousands now :O

oh man, late for the recommendations.

I can only think of stuff that isn't exactly that format, but more like making a small space seem unending
1408: not a classic by any means, but it has some really nice build up and paranoia
Keyhole: I love Guy Maddin to a fault, this one has a guy progressing from room to room in his house through the whole movie looking for his family. Overall a really surreal movie; Maddin's got this particular sense of humor you can either love or hate

Oh yeah, I was thinking about 1408 on the list, but completely forgot about it. There are some neat ideas in that!
Keyhole sounds interesting, I might just watch it anyway.

So Tzameti didn't fit, the first half is not what is exactly you are looking for, but the second was very claustrophobic and overall tense, with that surreal black and white, anyway, watch this then, ok this is not ONE ROOM, but ONE HOUSE movie, still, no doors, no windows for escape, very surreal

I love Inside, but I'm also a fan of extreme cinema. I love films which make me uncomfortable.

Yeah, coherence was suprisingly good! I thought the introduction to the characters felt a little forced at first, but was pleasantly suprised.

Green Room.

From the writer/director of that incredible film Blue Ruin.
I mean if you found Inside tough you may find Green Room a bit rough, especially in the final act, but I thought it was incredibly tense, well acted and had some great music.

Been several of these movies lately. Hateful Eight, Green Room, Room, etc. Also, Cube is kinda on topic, though it takes place in a series of one rooms.
