If I pour coffee on my laptop, will I sound like boc?
Throw away your smartphone.

Weird. My first post that was days ago never showed up for me until now...Cupz wrote:If I pour coffee on my laptop, will I sound like boc?
A quote from the old "Emotional Abuse" BoC interview:
"“[Soft synths] don't have the natural discrepancies that we like in real analog gear,” Sandison says. “Half of our synths have their guts hanging out. We can tweak the sounds by doing things like pouring coffee on them. Marcus will say, ‘It's too in tune, needs more coffee,’ so we pour a bit more coffee on the exposed innards. I don't think most software synths come with a ‘coffee’ setting — I'm just joking, by the way. Don't try pouring liquids on electrical devices, kids.”"

That's the first I'd heard of the Emotional Abuse interview, and wow, what a read. Definitely their most informative interview on how they work. Highly recommended. And thank you, 747, for bringing it to my attention.
Welcome, my friend. These are my people; now they are your people too.
Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
a cheaper better way to get the BOC sound in ableton is to not strangle your CPU with plugins and just create a hardware send to a VHS player and then bounce it back
source: can confirm its 10000% better because i tried it. and it's easy as fuck. no excuses.

A friend of mine agreed to give me his piece of shit tape recorder that he claims makes everything sound disgusting. I'm eager to hear how it impacts my recordings.

This is a commendable effort in terms of how much time went into it and to the extent that the sounds (and carefully produced tracks) do sound highly similar to BoC's originals, albeit sounding obviously digital. I can't see this sound library being used for any serious production, but well done getting close to the original sounds.

I'd still like to test out this Ableton pack some time for fun.
