Only object outside the Milky Way that's visible (just) with the naked eye, in the northern hemisphere anyway. Each time I look at it through my telescope, those photons hitting my retina took over 2.5 MILLION years to reach me.

Correct. Here's a Stellarium preview set to around 08:20AM GMT, based on my location here in Dorset. Still pretty impressive if not a total eclipse.

Of course, you're all far too sensible to go looking at this without suitable eye protection, right?

For those of you watching for the first time, its truly incredible. Just think about the mathematical coincidences involved. The sun 96million miles from Earth. The moon is both in exactly the right distance between us and the sun AND the right size to almost perfectly match the size of our nearest star. The chances if that happening are tiny. We really are incredibly lucky to see such an amazing spectacle.

But again, please don't be tempted to view directly. Seconds are all it takes to burn a lovely great hole on your retinas and that'll be that for your eyesight. Take care and enjoy!

Yes, it kind of makes you closer to the nature I think, people leaving their offices to watch the sky in the middle of the day. anyway that picture is from game Everybody's gone to the rapture, it's about you exploring the world after the last human left, I had the same feeling.

Went to the beach to watch the Perseids last night. Easily the best shower I've seen in a long while, 1 every 10 seconds or so. Beautiful stuff.
