A little rant about stingy Discogs sellers.

Even if there are only 500 (legitimate) copies in existence, this is bonkers. It's the only copy I can find for sale online, so he really has no reason to sell it for less, he's got a monopoly. I bet that dipstick has more copies stockpiled, ready to sell. And I bet that dipstick will eventually get my money anyway. I swear I'd never do something as terrible as have a bootleg made, but damn... In this case, it is dangerously tempting.

What do you guys say? Should I burn money, or my soul(figuratively)? Or should I live in denial of the existence of this record?

I'm thinking of selling a few records which fetch crazy prices on discogs. For example I could sell that Burial vs Massive Attack today and go and buy a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort 35's tomorrow, and still have enough money left over for a few bottles of nice wine.

I agree with you it's bonkers. But with the trend in vinyl surging, that's whats gonna happen.

I used to be obsessed with record collecting and getting the rarest things I could find from my favorite artists, but when I spent $100 on a Legendary Pink Dots test pressing I realized that there was no point and that record collecting is a massive waste of money. Believe me, you're better off ignoring it and never going to Discogs again. Don't keep going and, like me, realize too late how pointless it is.

Though I do still love my vinyl copies of Thunder Perfect Mind and Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished.

Isn't much of life pointless? My happiness isn't dependent on collecting records. No offence intended, but that epiphany doesn't faze me. Even if I decide not to buy it, the $200+ would not have mattered. Money can end up being wasted in ways we don't even think of. Why not rare records instead of... chairs? Screw the chairs! Ultimately though, music is priceless to some sensibility. If I can afford to buy it, and I think it's worth the money, I'll go or it. On top of that, if well cared for, my collection will build monetary value.
But I guarantee you, if I buy that record, I will shamelessly play it, at least once.

Often the most frivalous of purchases bring the most joy. Life is not about washing powder and magnolia paint. Buy that sonofabitch and start enjoying it. Or don't. Always a choice when it's frivalous.

People always hike up prices for more or less rare albums because they know they can get away with it. But you really can't complain, because that's how supply and demand works, and it sucks. I remember paying $120~ for this one record I really wanted a few years ago. I wound up selling it on Discogs to someone else for cheaper than I got it for since I needed the money. The guy I sold it to wanted to create a dispute on PayPal because apparently the record was damaged when I sent it to him, which it wasn't. The case wound up getting thrown out, and I never heard from him again, but it made me wary of ever selling vinyl on there again. There are some people who purchase rare records online, make high quality rips of them, then claim they're damaged so they can get their money back. So beware of that if you ever decide to sell vinyl.
