Tycho - Epoch

Post by Mikey »

I worked on a game codenamed Epoch a few years back. The producer told us it meant "The start of a new adventure". It turned out to be a massive flop.

Anyhow, I quite like this, then again I like all Tycho's releases. Sounds like he's ditching the band. Maybe he's passed his campfirehead phase?

This song is dense with material. So many movements and little pieces, it's like clockwork. Very danceable too! I'm actually going to see Tycho play live next week in Detroit – excited to see what some of his new pieces sound like, especially if he's playing with the band still.

Definitely an evolution of sound too. As much as I yearn for another Red Bridge or Past is Prologue, I love the exploration of new material. Curious though, the Soundcloud description says it's exploring darker themes. I wonder what the rest of the album will hold?

It maybe just be but I find this bland, unimaginative a bit cheesy and food for the masses.

Ready for all the Tycho haters on twoism!

Just feel like he had been kind of declining, I like his older stuff more, Past is Prologue/Science of Patterns. Will see if this release is more to my liking, will definitly listen to this track when I get home.

If you weren't keen on the last album then this probably wont do it for you. I can hear the commercial dance influences in it but I still enjoy it. I loved Past is Prologue but I can't see him going back to that early sound. He seems to have found a sweet spot between mainstream and underground music fans. I remember people i know bringing up the last album when it was released and thinking "how the f**k did you find Tycho?".

I'm excited to listen to this new album. Dive has some of my favourite electronic songs of all time, so I love Tycho's work

Ya I like it too. I still wish he'd open up his creativity more though. Moving to more non-electronic sounds and back since the last album, even physically moving, and I can still hear a lot of the same feel of the last 4 albums. I was thinking of buying it, but it's $10 digital. So I'm gonna make a deal with Tycho: you make something worth 1.5x what other people are making and I'll pay 1.5x for it.

It has kinda weird drum panning on it, I do think it's well produced though.

Maybe I'm alone here but Tycho's music makes me fall asleep whenever I hear it. I thought "Past Is Prologue" was great and I've been wanting a more "Kinetic" follow up since then. I also never got the whole BOC rip off thing, his stuff sounds nothing like BOC to me. Once upon a time wasn't he a member here ?

like the last album, this one has 2-3 decent sounding tracks then it drifts, even more so on this one. awake had a bit more but this is not worth buying imo. hate fillers nowadays. gone are the days thankfully where there was no option to pre-listen before instore pods or internet streams. of all the bad talk of illegal downloads, they are streaming samples nowadays so they shouldn't blame illegal downloads for lack of sales, the albums just aren't good enough. can't buy an album for just 2-3 tracks, wasted so much money over the years on it.

I always seem to like hearing the odd Tycho track in isolation but over an album my attention wanders. As with most upbeat music, I get a little irritated by it after a while. Especially when there's no real variation in tone.

Wow thanks for the recommendation there! Listening to Adrift and it is by far the lushest piece of music I have heard from Tycho! Have not been too impressed with a lot of his work. I really wanted to enjoy 'Awake' when it came out but it all sounded like this to me:

At any rate it would seem that 'Dive' catches him at a peak of sorts before he started working with arrangements that would lend themselves better to a Live Band ensemble. Will be grabbing this.
I make music as Sweguno.
