Download 30GB of lost cassettes from the 80s underground
If you’re looking for a good way to spend the rest of your week, Archive.org has unearthed a gigantic collection of cassettes from the mid-80 into the mid-90s.
According to their notes, the 30GB collection was saved from the archives of noise-arch.net and donated by former CKLN-FM radio host Myke Dyer in August 2009. Due to its size and obscurity, the collection hasn’t been properly notated but is said to include cassettes ranging from “tape experimentation, industrial, avant-garde, indie, rock, DIY, subvertainment and auto-hypnotic materials”.

Sounds cool. I guess I have something nice to listen to on my new bike.
Throw away your smartphone.

Boards of Canada's discography and All Lights Fucked will both be found somewhere in here I promise. You just have to listen to the entire collection to find them.

Given that this is such a monolithic, unorganized mess, we should compile a Twoism Master List of the tapes we think are most worth listening to.

Well, Happy Cycling to you, good sir.Cupz wrote:Sounds cool. I guess I have something nice to listen to on my new bike.
Fantastic idea. I'm gonna start downloading this tonight and it will be a while with my crappy internet, but once I dive in I'm up for that.Amo Bishop Roden wrote:Given that this is such a monolithic, unorganized mess, we should compile a Twoism Master List of the tapes we think are most worth listening to.

I just found this:
https://archive.org/details/noise-arch? ... ads&page=5
Is it the whole thing or what? Because it's too boring to go downloading one by one tbh

I finally got around to actually exploring this, and I'm surprised to find a Big City Orchestra tape in here. I definitely wasn't expecting to find any music I was familiar with.

Ah, I'm glad this thread was bumped cause I paused the download a long time ago and keep forgetting to resume it. I'm resuming it tonight. Thanks drillkicker.

Ya I wouldn't have even seen it otherwise, so extra thanks! I've gone through all but a handful that looked good to me. Might even do a 2nd pass. One plus of doing them 1 by 1 is you can spot listen and decide whether to d/l or not.

Re: Download 30GB of lost cassettes from the 80s underground
I've been digging through this collection for a while now. I'm usually looking for weird ambient noise compilations to play in the background while I study.
So far this one is my favorite...
There is this piece of music, on side two I believe, that is oddly disturbing. It sounds like some jazz noodling in a cafe or bar... but there is this tire squealing noise that keeps popping up in the track. There is something about it that is... unsettling.

My goodness. I found this last night and I must have listened to it 10 times already.
There is something so perfectly haunting and morose about this album.
The instrumental pieces are breathtaking and otherworldly.
The track at the end of side 1 I could swear I heard in a David Lynch movie.
I have found a new favorite album.

Those vocals. They're so off that it works.

There are a few more tracks by them on youtube, but it looks like they grew their sound after this into something different? There is a lot more out there in a related spirit though. Here's another not related lil gem.
