Tomorrow's Harvest is the best WARP album of this decade

Post by arvy »

So as the thread tittle suggest, what do you think?
I actually believe that this is the right time for this question. More than three years after the release, no indication for the future music, we are now officially in the Tomorrow's Harvest era my firends. TH hype almost completely gone, most of the BOC fans have already heard this album, probably some of these initial opinions have changed. So this is a pure music experience now, no BS.
I personally feel that because of the BOC inactivity it has lost some of its magical aura, comparing to the first 2-3 years, anticipation of something going to happen was like a fuel to the fire. Now it is almost gone, no live dates, no EP and so on. And honestly I don't care. I think that TH is a very complete album, which is probably why they didn't release any extra music for it. So speaking about TH, I was lucky enough to experience it from the very beginning, since the first clues were dropped, listening to randoms podcasts, suggesting crazy theories and changing yours, this really ads to this album experience. Also some of the moments from it almost encrypted in my memory, like the melody from White Cyclosa...
So what do you think? Yes, why? No,which album tops it? Syro was agreat album, also it was a comeback from Aphex Twin, but for me it is just don't have enough substance inside it, to be classic such as Tomorrow's Harvest.

Tomorrow's Harvest is a great album start to finish with some serious ear candy in the production, but my only gripe is the slight lack of sonic/conceptual experimentation. As a result, when inevitably comparing it against their other albums (or other great modern records, of which there are admittedly few imo) I see TH as a more standardly 'musical' album, where their previous 3 LPs had substantially more mind altering qualities to them. Of course, I'm expecting a lot of BoC to be transcendental on each and every album, and expectation leads to disappointment, but what's done is done...

Ultimately, the reason I'm really posting here is because of this album:
Image
A brilliantly organized listen from start to finish. I think it's spectrum of emotion is deeper than TH's, with it's highs more blissful and it's lows even more alienating and ominous. In a way, it touches on a certain anxiety and darkness that BoC might have been feeling in TH, but I think R+7 does so in a way that feels within the present moment, whereas it strikes me as odd that BoC used 80's tropes to try to discuss a contemporary issue. This being said I think that OPN's most recent album 'Garden of Delete' is only half good

Anyway, my vote goes for Oneohtrix Point Never - R+7 as Warp Album of the decade. But TH, Syro, and Autechre's releases are good answers too : )

Definitely have to check out OPN's work. I saw him live in 2014 when he was supporting this LP and it was a great show, very unique music not quite like anything I'd heard before.

Regarding TH not taking huge risks in terms of established structure, I'd say Jacquard Causeway is definitely a step in a new direction for them. Overall though I'd agree, TH plays to their strengths but it isn't a radical shift in direction for them. This isn't to say that I would ultimately desire for them to sway too much away from their established aesthetic though since it has proven so fruitful and engaging, more so than most artists can muster in an entire career.
I will say this: TH is their most concise and honed 'statement', if not their best album.

There are two albums from Warp this decade that I enjoyed more than I enjoyed TH. The first is Cold Spring Fault Less Youth by Mount Kimbie and the second is Silver Wilkinson by Bibio. Both of these albums appealed to me thematically more than TH, which musically I like a lot! Perhaps this is due to me already being interested in the topic before TH came out, but it never quite clicked for me.

I got more out of OPN's Garden of Delete than I did Tomorrow's Harvest.
Also, Syro is an excellent album ... I agree with whomever said that.

Also, if we're talking about the decade, Gonjasufi's A Sufi and a Killer is worth considering.

Not saying Tomorrow's Harvest isn't a great album ... but those two aforementioned pop into my mind as "Best Warp album of the decade" before TH

I loved R Plus Seven, one of my favorite albums of all time but I really didn't get Garden of Delete. It sounds like this hyper-vaporised thing that I don't seem to grasp at all. Syro/Exai/TH would be my Warp contenders of the decade.

Was just thinking about this: Regarding BoC using '80's tropes' in calling attention to a modern issue, I see it as their personal projection on the premise of 'Apocalypse as the media tells it'; considering they grew up during the Cold War era and those John Harrison scored films were likely woven into the fabric of paranoia for them during that time.

Are you familiar with the works of Ron Fricke and the music of Micheal Stearns? There are songs on R+7 that remind me of their work together on Baraka and Samsara.

Imo Elseq is ae's best recent work but it's not nearly as consistent as TH

Warp has released a slew of great releases this decade. I wouldn't call a winner because it's comparing apples with refrigerator magnets.

I second Silver Wilkinson! Some amazing tracks on that album, particularly Mirroring All.

Help me I can't get into any new music except for some low-key uk rap etc. I really try but it has a synthetic edge that is unavoidable even when people go out of their ways to avoid it. I like and identify with boards and mbv's recent music because they have the ability to stay afloat and avoid getting delusional and washed up which is rare and almost exclusive to them respectively... delusional in other ways perhaps if we are talking about kevin shields but the music is still genuinely something different. It is like time stands still and the world around them changing has no bearing on their headphases (to steal and possibly misuse a phrase)

I mention this only as we are talking about the last decade's music generally here.
Does anyone else see even a glimmer of what I mean ?

I do, I think. My version is maybe more muted and confined to the vampire of souls that is "socially engineered music", but I feel a low grade version of it in music I like that makes me wish for something new to dive into. The only fix I've found is forcing myself to stretch out and try more things that are new to me. New things can even take me to a different place with music that's already familiar. Not sure if that's any help to you. This is a great place for that though, seems like every time I peek in here (and esp. 'this random sound') I discover something new I like and that tells me how little I've seen. Just w/the music in this thread, there's a ton of stuff I still haven't gotten my mind around. It takes some stretching for me though, I can get crusty ;)

elseq, along with many other albums this decade, blow TH out of the water. Still a solid album though.

How do you figure? Autechre themselves have never actually said if it is or isn't an album, so it's completely up to interpretation. Some people consider it a collection of 5 EPs, some think it's 5 albums, some consider it one large album split into 5 parts :)

Our honeymoon period is over, and I think the relationship between the album and I has strengthened for it. It's one of the best albums to be released in the last several years, and a wonderful and exceptional addition to boc's oeuvre.
