Kaleidoscope leak

Post by Thermospore »

My Geogaddi Kaleidoscope arrived in the mail today! Unfortunately, when I opened the package I was greeted by some sort of oily liquid all over the inside of the bubble wrap. I'm not really sure if any liquid could have gotten there if it wasn't from the kaliedoscope, but who knows.

After cleaning it off I wrapped it in paper towels and had it sit in various positions for a few hours, but nothing leaked at all... There is an air bubble inside the liquid, but it seems like some other peoples pictures of the kaleidoscope have varying degrees of air bubbles and others have none.

Are the kaliedoscopes supposed to be air bubble free? Do you think the liquid was from the kaleidoscope?

I think it is likely to be the oils from the kaleidoscope in reality because there doesn't seem to be another (non explicit and reasonable) explanation for your mystery gunk. It should be all good as long as you wash your hands after touching it or at least don't ingest any or put it in close proximity to your mouth. You never know what magic liquids may have been used and when in doubt, be cautious. If you notice further leaking, try to identify the source of said leak and seal it up with a tad of superglue. Its likely it was thrown about a bit in shipping.

When you sort everything out, if you could post a pic from the eye-piece I would be really grateful as there are only one or two existing pictures of said visuals and they seem to be of really intricate quality.

I'll be sure to post some good pictures from the eyepiece!

Unfortunately, it does seem to be leaking. the leak is pretty much all around the two seams at the top and bottom of the liquid chamber. Are there any recommendations on how to seal it up without damaging it or ruining the appearance? I'm sure superglue would stop the leak, but it might be hard to make it sightly.

Perhaps transparent nail polish? Some sort of tile sealant? Some kind of epoxy?

In any case this thing needs to get sealed up fast before it bleeds out. It's definitely not replaceable, and I only get one shot....

I don't know about oil, but silicon sealant is used to stop water leaks. It might not be invisible, but you could try to keep it neat

Was it packaged correctly? Disappointing something so collectable wouldn't be properly protected prior to sending.

Seal it up at the seams with some kind of electrical tape should you be in possession of any so you aren't battling a ticking clock, the larger rubbery gaffer tape should do too as long as it doesn't allow fluids to pass through it. This should give you enough time to weigh up your options, when I stated superglue what I was actually thinking of was epoxy resin, a silicone based glue would work too possibly as someone stated above.

If worse comes to worst, you may have to sacrifice some of the external visual aesthetics of the item for its ability to actually function as it was intended to. It definitely sounds like a shipping issue to me as if it had been leaking beforehand, there wouldn't be as much fluid as it is currently retaining.

Yeah I'm sure it happened during shipping. It was packaged quite well, so the post office must have done a number on it. I believe I have found who manufactured the kaleidoscope, so I will call them and see what they say. I'll report back

Still waiting for someone to either suggest the hidden message behind this leaky Kaleidoscope or else slow it down from 45rpm to 33rpm.

Have you tried soaking a blank cassette tape (it has to be a memorex) in said fluid and playing it in reverse?

Does it sound anything like an alternate mix of magic window?

Keep us posted !!!!

Not gunna lie, when I realized it was leaking I was like "if my kaliedoscope is gonna leak, then I'd better get som'n good out of it. Doubt any other BoC fan has tasted the gook inside the Geogaddi promo scope..." so I licked a drop off my finger. No ragrets.

Maybe I don't have a cool MHTRTC or Geogaddi promo cassette, but I betcha I'm one of like two people on the planet to taste that gook.

Also, thanks for the responses everyone! I really appreciate it. The manufacturer's office should be open tomorrow; hopefully they will know what to do. I'll tell you what they say.

Was it sent by airmail by any chance? Air pressure in an aeroplane hold may have caused the liquid to expand and push through the seals.

Good news everyone! I got through to the person who manufactured the scopes. Apparently they manufacture the scopes in a special way, and it would be quite difficult to repair the leak. They said they still manufacture the same form factor of scope, and that if I sent mine to them they would bust out the BoC paper insert and the trinkets and whatnot in the liquid suspension and put them in a new casing!

In any other case that would feel quite sacrilegious (to smash open a priceless BOC artifact), but I guess as it's the original manufacturer, they are keeping all the original inserts, and they are using their same outer casing, I should be able to justify it in my heart.

It was almost surreal to talk to the person who made these mythical Geogaddi kaleidoscopes! They recalled that only a very small amount of them were manufactured. They mentioned they were unaware of what exactly Boards of Canada was, thinking perhaps it was some sort of political/government thing. It was very cool to talk with them!
