Post Rock

Recently I've been exploring the Post Rock genre, because they always have lots of violins and cello (which I truly adore), mainly the artists on Constellation records; especially those related to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Some of my recent recommendations:

* Esmerine (Beautiful melancholy string sections interspersed with light drums and ambient sounds.)

* A Silver Mt. Zion (their whole discog is nice!)

* The Mile End Ladies String Auxiliary

Coming from backgrounds in rock and punk, The Mile End Ladies String Auxiliary (MELSA) takes the conventional string trio format and twist it so it integrates the angst and energy crucial to these genres. The ladies began working together as a module of large scale experimental improv band Set Fire to Flames and decided to carry on the experiment on their own. The MELSA blends elements of punk, folk, and minimalist composition, with an ear for the music of avant-garde legends like Arnold Dreyblatt, Iva Bittova and Steve Reich.

Becky Foon (A Silver Mt. Zion, Esmerine) on cello
Genevieve Heidsteck (Sackville, Hanged Up) on viola
Sophie Trudeau (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion) on violin

* Sigur Rós - Sæglópur (very nice new single!)

* Mono
especially the albums:
Walking Cloud & Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered & The Sun Shined
You Are There
Palmless Prayer # Mass Murder Refrain (with World's End Girlfriend) (track 03 is too beautiful for words; 17 minutes of pure emo:))

* Amiina - AnimaminA

All of those are very nice albums! Definitely worth to check out...

now I'm grabbing the albums from Set Fire To Flames -- I think this will be epic once again!

Any other crucial items I should listen, especially those containing cello/violins? Hit me!

All the cello/violins stuff seems to be mainly on Constellation, i'm not sure of any others, Do Make Say Think are kinda like that, check them out.

for other post rockish, Explosions in the Sky are great to listen too, and 65 Days of Static, I'm not to sure if they fit into th whole post rock area though, like like good instrumental rock.

I'll check out some of the stuff you posted, thanks i've also been for more stuff like this, esp godspeed, a silvr mount zion stuff, cheers!

Mogwai? I wouldn't really consider them post rock, but a lot of people do. I want explore this genre a little more myself.

i probably never would have gotten into boards of canada if i wasnt into post rock first... theres some similarities there if you listen for them.

godspeed you black emperor is the best of the bunch imho.

I like 65daysofstatic, Tortoise, Trans Am, The Sea And Cake, Mum, Fridge, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Mono, June of 44, M83, Aereogramme, Mogwai, Karate, Labradford, Hrsta, Gastr Del Sol, Electrelane, Do May Say Think etc.

dam how did i forget Tortoise and the influence band Mogwai!!!!

I even had a Mr Beast hoodie on today, strange, but yeh. also excellent!

Some one said Fly Pan Am, another good constellation rcrds one.

I heard a few Tortoise albums and thought it was pure shite. Just my opinion, but I wasn't feelin it at all. The Unkle remix of "Bruise Blood" is damn good though.

anyone listen to slint? they've got some great songs, but alot of them have too similar of a style. they seem a bit lazy and uncreative at times.

I haven't gotten fully into post-rock because i have a short attention span; so, sometimes those 6 minute build-ups bore the hell out of me

But yeah I like Sigur Ros, etc.

I recommend a band called The Besnard Lakes. They've been described as a David Lynch take on My Bloody Valentine. Great winter listening music.

Saeglopur is the new Sigur Ros single?! Holy shit! I never keep up with the singles at all, but that is hands down my favorite track by them. It's one of the most dramatic, epic, empowering pieces of music I've ever heard. Moves me to tears almost every time.

Post rock is a fun genre. Huge fan of Mogwai, Sigur Ros, God Speed You Black Emperor, Slint (If they count as such) I need to check out Tortoise and some others. I'm slacking.
