Influence from "Paul Kass"

Post by number-six »

I'm sure some of you have been into Super Deluxe recently, and the edits of Vic Berger. In one of his edits of Jim Bakker, he includes some music from a guy called Paul Kass. This track to be exact:

Now, the BoC-ness should be obvious to everyone; from the sound of the music to the tone of its artwork. At first I thought Paul Kass was some unknown wannabe doing a nice job at taking influence. Then, I looked a little further.

First off, and as a little tidbit, it's from a compilation album called "Tomorrow's Achievements". Just a fun coincidence. Then, it turns out, the compilation is of material released between 1976-1986 (a timespan that includes the formative years of the brothers). Listening to the album in full is unbelievable. The tinges of BoC sound throughout are actually rather shocking. The album is on spotify, here:

Paul Kass is credited on numerous tracks; all some of the best contenders for influencing BoC.

But wait, there's more. A little more of a look into this enigmatic name brings up little. On the spotify for his name, there are only a handful of scattered releases. Beyond "Tomorrow's Achievements", the music credited to Paul Kass seems to be universally as if he was merely some in-studio muzak-maker; probably for low-budget television or films, considering their titles and feel. I believe this is the same Paul Kass of "Tomorrow's Achievements", despite the remarkable tone-change. ANYWAY, this all leads me to my final connection.

One of the album's he's credited on is no less than:

These are all just observations I've made that I thought the community would enjoy. Food for thought, and many of you many just love the "Tomorrow's Achievements" album!

You, my good sir, have stumbled upon one hell of an excellent mix. Tomorrow's Achievements is a compilation of 'library production music' that was culled from the Parry Music Library. Parry Music is a music production library based out of Canada.

Kass, along with many others, contributed to this library.

I feel like this compilation popped up somewhere in these forums before. Regardless, library music is a seemingly endless supply of BoC-esque soundscapes and jingles. Once you start going down that rabbit hole, you may never stop! I know I haven't!

(I own a small chain of small chains)

I was reminded of BoC as well when I first saw Vic's edits months ago.
