How did you discover Boards Of Canada?
Big apologies if this has already been covered but I couldn't find anything in the search engine. How did you discover the music of Boards Of Canada?. For me it was after Kid A by Radiohead coming out. I loved that album and at that time, being young and predominately a fan of rock music, I hadn't heard anything like it. I read the reviews and interviews from Thom Yorke saying how it had been influenced by Aphex Twin, Autechre and BOC and delved into the work of those artists. Aphex grabbed me straight away but I was left puzzled by Autechre and BOC. I only kept coming back to Music Has The Right To Children really because of Roygbiv before the beauty of the whole album slowly took hold. By the time Geogaddi came out I was a proper fan boy
I'd love to hear the stories of others

Couple of previous threads, but don't worry. At least you searched, thanks!
And by the way, you discovered the in a similar way to me. Kid A, read Thom Yorke was into Warp and BOC.
Down the rabbit hole I went....

I discovered BoC in a Half-life 1 Mod called Sven Co-op. One of the servers had music while loading into the game, and it played different electronic music, and Chromakey Dreamcoat was one of them.

Summer of 1998, glowing review of MHTRTC in AP, I think.
Re: How did you discover Boards Of Canada?
Read a review for Geogaddi on Pitchfork (I think), went and bought it, popped it in the car stereo, drove home watching a clear sky that went from turquoise to orange as the sun set, just as "Ready Lets Go" began to drone. Hooked ever since.
Re: How did you discover Boards Of Canada?
Quite recently (late 2015) was put on to BOC from them being featured in a top electronic albums of all time list. As with many people I first listened to MHTRTC. I thought is was very sparse, creepy and even dull. It was so unlike any other music I'd ever heard. Right from the first listen however, I loved Roygbiv and thought it was amazingly beautiful. I'm so glad Roygbiv exists on that album, as it helps ease people into BoC, keeps them coming back. That song being much more 'normal' and quickly likable is what kept me coming back and I probably wouldn't have gotten into BoC without it. I played the whole album through the iTunes preview ~10 times over the course of a few months. To my surprise It started to grow on me more and more during that time, and eventually I purchased it. Fast forward to today BoC are my favorite electronic artists.

EYDIAB on the Skampler compilation around 1997. I don't think I've ever listened to anything in my life that resonated so deeply with me, been a huge fan ever since.

For me it was basically a guy doing some popping and locking dance moves to dawn chorus.

The SKAM Skampler compilation back in 1997 (good grief, that's twenty years ago now!):

Everything You Do Is A Balloon and Hi-Scores were like nothing I'd heard before. The rest is history.

This is a bit of a weird one. I was randomly listening to vaporwave songs on SoundCloud and their album "a few old tunes" started to play out of the blue. I instantly loved the sound of them and got drawn in.

Roybgiv on an NME compilation in 1999 called Annual Probe V2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NME_compi ... lbums#1999
I was completely intrigued, it was like nothing on earth i'd ever heard. I bought MHTRTC off the back of that one track. It was the summer before i started university and i remember introducing alot of people to it in our halls who'd been listening to alot of Moby and Fatboy Slim, people were either blown away or couldn't get their head around it. I lost that CD eventually

Re: How did you discover Boards Of Canada?
Incidentally i remember being disappointed on first listen to BoC that the rest of the record wasn't more like Roybgiv. I definitely couldn't get my head around tracks like Telephasic Workshop, Pete Standing alone or Smokes Quantity - but i definitely instantly liked Rue The Whirl and Aquarius. It took quite a few listens to fully appreciate the whole album

Early 2005 through a show on Radio 1 called The Blue Room.
I went to a barber as I wanted some highlights. He gave me a video of old haircuts.
Re: How did you discover Boards Of Canada?
I discovered BOC via a review of MHTRTC in CMJ New Music Monthly sometime in 1998, I think. I ordered the CD from Matador Records mail-order shortly thereafter.

Someone said Radiohead's Lotus Flower sounded like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldjCFFu-PWM
It does kinda, but I was more interested in hearing the other works by them. Definitely not a typical first BoC track to hear

Re: How did you discover Boards Of Canada?
Can't remember the exact moment. A friend told me about them in sixth form saying I would like them. Never paid attention but then by college I had the first two albums and was in HMV at 9am on the dot to pick up The Campfire Headphase plus the Dayvan Cowboy single and DVD when they got released.
Used BOCs music as a slideshow accompaniment to some of my photography work at college and then at university.
Looking back I realise that I would have heard them a lot much earlier through watching Mind Body & Kickass Moves when that was on tv. I don't think there was an episode that didn't have one of the songs on (at minimum)

Re: How did you discover Boards Of Canada?
I randomly bought Hi Scores from Fopp on Byres Road in Glasgow back in the day. You used to be able to listen before you buy, I jumped to EYDIAB because the name stood out, listened to about 1 minute and bought it immediately. Been obsessed ever since.
