I don't think anyone in any sort of sector of the art world owes anyone anything and shouldn't be rushed. Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960 and didn't release anything more until its sequel in 2015, which was a completely different world than when its predecessor was written and distributed. in a world where everything is so accessible that I can Google "Cardi B" and download her entire vocabulary, I think, if anything, Boards of Canada are teaching us that it's okay to not be so active and to indulge everything about you to everybody, musician, celebrity, or normal human being. Seems to be a hard lesson to swallow nowadays (this statement is a general one, not directed at anybody).

If I ever learned what BOC's favorite food was or how often they're #inthelab I think it would ruin this magic we have with them. A couple examples: I love and respect The Flashbulb so much but every now and then I want to change his password for a few months. Not that he's very active or outlandish, but I appreciate the mystique every now and then. Rob Sheridan too..I joined his Patreon; love, love, love and respect everything he's done, but sometimes he Tweets something obnoxious and I want change his password.

I'm pretty much in the middle of both "camps" on this - I mean, if you have a normal life (career, kids, whole nine yards) then, yeah...things are going to be delayed. A simple "hello" from time to time would be nice, though. I mean shit, even their other aspects of art have dried up, too. Either they've hit critical mass creatively, or....they just don't want to publish their stuff. Either way, radio silence from HQ is just in poor taste these days, regardless of their situation or their perceived want to stay elusive.

Hell, have Warp issue a statement/update/*something*, all info doesn't have to come from the brothers themselves...

Take for example the confirmation we have from a Current Branch Davidian about their having a conversation with BoC around the time of IABPOITC. They investigate, absorb aesthetic and emotions regarding situations and report their findings in musical form.

The input is the same, the output isn't on the visible spectrum though, its on the sonic one.

Having some sort of "official" statement from Warp or whatever is not their way of doing things. It would be mdg if anything, and I hope by now you can see that his absence has been very conspicuous since 2016.

We are hearing from them every so often, in the form of some old song paired with a fan video. We had 3 new remixes in 2016-2017. What they started in June 2016 with that Macquarie Ridge post is essentially the same thing that the black box two years and change before TH accomplished. A statement of intent to their fans (in their uniquely vague and cryptic way) but also likely a personal deadline to themselves, 2+ years out so that it doesn't really feel so much like a job.

This time, they just chose to troll us along the way using our expectations of them, weaponizing social media for their own purposes to maybe prove one of their original points about the internet.

Something I've noticed they do is they basically take/make five "songs" and then combine them into such a way that they turn into one big boy song. They've said it themselves that one three-second sound could take days to perfect. Think in the way of musical motifs, except they only play the accents as the 'melody' while the hertz are goin' fucking nuts in the background (especially noticeable in Nlogax). Once you pick out the different tunes, it's hard to un-notice them and even harder to resist looking for more. Idfk how they do it but with that in mind, it makes sense why it takes them foreverrrr to even make a few bars.


Take this sample for example (Insantarium posted this guys, give him all da love). In it alone, you can pick out bits and pieces of possibly three different Tomorrow's Harvest songs (Reach for the Dead, Come to Dust, Semena Merthyvh). However it's only a mere fraction of their identifying ambiences, there is quite obviously a LOT more to/in them.

Oh.... and they also very slightly speed up and slow down single bars to play further tricks on you. They'll do the same with pitches too. Next time you listen to Aquarius, listen to the kid laughing. He laughs, then they pitch it down a little more everytime. Very VERY hard to notice, but once you do, you'll never be able to un-hear it.

It'll be something you're gonna have to flip on its head and put your own spin on, but the best part is that it's surprisingly simple when you think about it. The literal secret is that they combine the 'visual' with the 'auditory'. Try looking at some pieces of their sheet music sometime (if you can even find one that was transcribed correctly). You'll notice that some of them are literally the tiniest things that please the brain and ears (like the golden ratio Fibonacci sequence in Devil in the Details, or the fact that Mike specifically touches up the drum's vibrations on EVERY SINGLE PIECE to that it'll reflect off the ground, walls, or even headphones better). They quite literally just take a sound and go "ok and what if we do this". And that's the best damn part! Good luck on your journey friend, and find many inspirations.
