Contractual Obligations

Was there ever any mention of Boards of Canada having any kind of contractual deal with Warp where they commit to producing X amount of albums?

You hear this sometimes becomes a burden for bands and they're just eager to get some freedom from the terms of their record label.

Warp, of course, are reasonable people, and I can't imagine this being the case here but I wonder if anything like this was ever mentioned?

What makes you say this?

From what I hear WARP has their roster by the balls. In the Autechre AMA they said "Warp owns every sound we make, no joke.". This probably counts for BoC as well.

Out Hud is an underrated band, if that's what your username is referencing. I'm sure BOC was under some sort of number of albums contractual obligation at one time since it was standard protocol in the 90's. However, the times have changed and WARP seems to be catching up to them (RE: their newfound activity with social media) so I'm not sure how their contracts would work at the moment. One thing is for sure...I'm sure Boards are locked into their contracts pretty tightly since they're one of the staples of the label.

so, assuming the author here has their facts straight, and also assuming that EPs don't count towards the fulfillment of a contract, and that Twoism is officially considered an EP (despite qualifying as album length,) then in theory there should be one more album left to go.

I have to wonder how Warp has any kind of leverage in negotiations at this
point - at this point, as far as I can tell, their roster consists of Aphex,
Autechre, Squarepusher... um, Plaid and Jimi Tenor. Oh, and I thought I heard
they signed Weatherall again but they've yet to announce it so maybe it
didn't happen. And don't forget that Aphex has, what, one album left on his
deal with Warp? Frankly, Warp's best days are in the past.

neither of these tracks will appear on their forthcoming album which is a
joint project between skam & warp records.

boards of canada originate from the north east coast of scotland, where they
begun recording on a home hi-fi set up around 1983. various xtra band
members have come & gone since 1986, but the main duo of mike & marcus have
always stuck to the original home made sound. their first vinyl release was
_twoism_ an eight track LP limited to 100 copies which they produced &
financed themselves in 1995. h aving supported Ae, panasonic & cylob in july
of 1996, they released the _high scores_ e.p. through skam records.

1997 saw their second support slot with Ae and a headline @ versivo [the
skam club] in manchester. their live show soon became a talking point,
highlighted by their continued use of video footage
derived from 8mm film. after a string of remix work, the summer of 1997 saw
them play alongside Ae @ the phoenix festival & mike paradinas @ the
sunflower festival in munich. this was their followed by an autumn mini tour
and dates in ireland, germany & switzerland, and the band also played live @
the opening night of warp's blech night in london. along with their
forthcoming album due out through skam/warp, the band will also start work
on an album for mike paradinas' new label, planet mu.

About the supposed Dublin gig, I followed that up with the promoter a good few years ago (who are still active, they put Ae on in Dublin a few years ago, the name escapes me now) anyway he said the BoC gig never happened, despite The Cosmic Crofter (who you think would know) on the idm list saying it did.

It is painful to read how many live performances happened that we will never hear, especially during this point in their career when they seemed a bit more carefree with their sound.

Also the number of releases that were planned but never went through. I refuse to die before these early tracks are unearthed. All of them.

I wonder if Mike Paradinas made any secret recordings... He would at least have some interesting anecdotes to tell.

Their live show became a 'talking point', yet we have hardly any reliable information about it. Does anyone know about this 'autumn mini tour'? '97 must have been a good year for them.
