I've been trying to teach myself how to use some VJ software and was using Happy Cycling to see what I could do. I thought people on this board might be interested in the results:
I realise this might not fit perfectly into the normal BoC aesthetic but I was attempting to forge interesting imagery with the sort of kinetic movement that Happy Cycling conjures up in my head. By taking normal footage taken from train windows, roller coasters and films and overlapping them with each other, it had the effect of producing a tint that looks somewhat like the vintage footage often used in actual and fan made BoC videos. Towards the end and in keeping with the change in music, I also used an effect that makes the footage look a bit like a dodgy VHS recording too.
I also just could help finding it very funny to have a small animated fellow running along the tracks of a Blackpool roller coaster while the song plays in the background.
Anyway, let me know what you think. Is it sacrilegious?
I love the dancing guy with the mustache, lol. It's really cool how you got the cyclists to sync up with the music

There was no reason for me to stay in the real world any longer. In the real world, it didn't matter if I was there or not. When I realized that, I was no longer afraid of losing my body.
Thanks Komorebi! I think it might just be a coincidence that some of the cyclists movements match the music. Some of the lines/rectangles and colours are linked to the volume or certain ranges of frequencies. The speed of some of the background video (the seagulls and one of the Godzilla bits) are also linked to the volume.
I've been using software called Magic Music Visuals which enables you to chose effects and then match them with the music. I've only really just scratched the surface of how it works at the moment but it's interesting to have a go at it.

Will agree that the imagery of the running fellow on the tracks is really quite amusing, but this isn't sacrilegious at all.
Would love to see some of these for other BoC tracks.
Thanks Valotonin! I did pay for the software (https://magicmusicvisuals.com/) but you can download the full version for free. The main difference is that you can't save your work if it's the free version but you can still export the movie as an mp4 I think. I found it was worth paying for the software since it takes quite some time to put things together and it would be annoying to do it without saving.
There are other vj type software out there and there are a number of free options if you look around. There's one called GLMixer that is open source and completely free.
I'm going to try and make another Boards of Canada video at some point but at the moment I'm trying to put together one for the drum and bass classic Super Sharp Shooter by DJ Zinc which involves 3D letters, Method Man and Chuck Norris. It might take some time!
