I hadn't heard that track until following that link. Great stuff! I love the 60s scifi synth sound. Most of all I like how this is drenched in R2R tape warmth and saturation. The pad with the EQ sweep is a nice homage to Dawn Chorus.

One thing I have noticed, in almost working exclusively with analog gear, is that it is much harder to "easily" dial in "non-destructive"editing....which is similar to how in a DAW you make project copies to retain original....when you transfer from tape to tape, you always loose some range and tone....i found that for every tape i want to edit...i have to pre-master and mixdown my multi track tape recordings to multitrack DAT lossless, to retain the entire "snap-shot" sound image of everything you hear, plus a high end tube dynamics expander....not to mention phasing issues.... Then, transfer through a tube compressor back into my R2R lol, I finally found where a visual spectrum analyzer comes in handy with these sort of things....now after all of these years, I keep my mixes simple except for specific effect chain automations, and hence why i multitrack to 8 track cassette workstation that allows me to "DJ" my own samples, then I transfer to R2R hot through a tube compressor at +3-5db of hot clipping

although, if you want the "1000 year grain" sound....then recording over and over on a tube type r2r will result in very heavy "coloring"..... i hear this "tone/effect" the most in Campfire Headphase, Twoism, Trans Canada Highway, and Tomorrow's Harvest most noticeably....

That song massaged my ears. Wonderful sounds there. The percussion especially has such an unmatchable analogue quality to it's sound. Gorgeous.


I fixed up my remix for the amazing Purpledaughter some more. I like version 2 better. It's really just the second half that's different/improved.

Experimenting with off-timing

The off-timing experiment is off time... lol. It's a very different experience to listen to off-time experimenting. I often find myself waiting until the synchronization happens and then being bored until the next sync arrives when listening to this type of experimenting. The pretty sounds kept me entertained, however. It does provide a flavour of chaos, having things off time. I think the title of the track reflects that well.

The sounds in it are fantastic and there are definitely sections where the off-times sync up and play together wonderfully and magically. I do feel that percussion is important to always have on time with other percussive elements. You can still have the timing on perc off, but the time signature on the percussion pretty much has to remain a low multiple. It more or less just ends up giving the illusion of a more complex beat instead of the listener waiting for a synchronization to happen. I used that trick in My song "Horizon". The kick is a different timing than the rest of the song, but it stays in sync the whole time and tricks you into thinking the percussion is a much longer sequence than the elements that made it up actually are.

Melodies seem to sound better when written while depressed.
This is a direct recording of 1 synth played live in 1 take. I then ran it through tape and mastered it. I love when melodies sound good forwards and backwards, so I crudely slapped it on the end again in reverse.

Same, as it was just an experiment, I was playing with moments where it trails off but then syncs up, I was bored of normal locked percussion patterns and in this one, I was messing with cassette tape heads and motor speeds. I tried creating a window where the original tempo opens up inside the slower one. Need to mess with it more to get it “perfect” lol. I have other songs where it is completely synced and controlled more solidly. Nice tunes, I like the atmosphere of the first one a lot.
The guitar song is going to be the main backing track in a more folktronic style acoustic album in the future. Need to track down a new full studio tube mixing console as mine just burned in a house fire

Ya, I play drums a bit. Not a lot. Probably the most complex thing I can play is Odd Nosdam - Small Ax. I'm not about to play a drum solo in a rush song or anything though. hahaha.

I'm getting into playing guitar. A guy at the local music store gave me an acoustic guitar for free because he "sees potential". I had a grin on my face for the rest of the week.
