Late to the party, as I tend to be, I've just discovered The Necks, after their album 'Body' was recommended by Geoff Dyer in an article in the Guardian. I thought I'd have a quick listen on Youtube, was mesmerised and listened all the way through.
They seem like the spiritual successors to the style of jazz on 'In a Silent Way', one of my favourite albums.
Off to buy it now, but was wondering what other albums of theirs Twoismers might recommend?

They are probably my favourite band of all time. If you ever get a chance to go see them live then do it, it's a fantastic experience, they normally do two sets of between 40 to 60 minutes each, each set being a single improvised piece. It's not quite conceivable that three guys using entirely acoustic instruments can make the sound that they do live.
Anyway albums:
There is quite a bit of variety in style, the one you mention, Body has elements of ambient and elements of a more propulsive kraut rock sound. I tend to prefer the more ambient stuff - my favourite studio albums are Aether and Open. Hanging Gardens is more full on.
Favourite live album is Townsville. It's a beautiful, oceanic wash of sound.

Thanks for the recommendations. Other folk on the internet keep mentioning Open, Aether, Hanging Gardens and also Drive By, so those look like a good place to start. I think Open will be my next purchase.
