If you found rare BoC material.

Post by Roswell »

If you found rare BoC material what would you do with it? Would you leak it online or would you respect the bands wishes to keep it hidden?

Catalog 1 to 3: IDK. I do not want these 3 catalog albums to have the same spooky ambiences like that Visual Drone 12 fake on youtube. (The Visual drone 12 fake I listed perfectly captures the idea what Mike and Marcus could have made back then. But then again, it is not BOC-Ish as it was obviosly a slowed version of a song that was not recorded on a cassette)
Acid Memories: Yes for the right reasons. I want to know if this will sound like the original Music70 version from 1989.
Close Vol 1 and 2: For vol 1, possibly no since there is some songs from that album that are leaked in Random 35 unless if the track timing is coicidence. But for volume 2, yes, no one in this fanbase (at least on this website) has heard of it.
Play by Numbers: Certianly yes because the production values are better.
Hooper Bay: See Play by Numbers.
Music Has the Right to Children and Geogaddi unused tracks: No, I might get a dmca takedown for that one, and it will be impossible for Mike and Marcus to attribute me for the song as they probably sound very authetic to be B.O.C
Any other Pre-Twoism albums that are currently unknown to us, no, I do not want B.O.C fans thinking that I made it. Plus Mike and Marcus will obviously attribute the song to me to protect their privacy.

Overall:If I leaked the pre-twoism albums on youtube, Mike and Marcus might just say that I made the songs for trolling. I am very scared right now, but at the same time, wanting all of the fanbase to hear the pre-twoism B.O.C

If your wondering what I said about how Mike and Marcus would do about the leaks: Obviously, once you leak a song online, it will stay on the web forever as people will reupload it even if people delete it. Having Boards of Canada claim that I made the songs for trolling would be easier than trying to remove all leaks and copies off the web. Alot of B.O.C fakes are circulating, but if I leak it, MDG or someone else from hexagon sun will claim the leaks as just another fake. That’s how Boards of Canada keeps everything a secret.

Keep it to myself. Because once you leak something, not only is the value of private creations lost but the quality it self may degrade via bootlegs. And then there's the whole mislabeling thing. (A14 was in the wild for 2+ years before R35 was found).
this thread is full of shenanigans.

Unfourtanatley, Mike and Marcus would deny that they made the leaked song and will claim online that you made it for trolling to protect their privacy. B.O.C will do everything to keep their unreleased songs a secret online.

Shop it to Twoism Records under the false pretense that I made it. What could go wrong?

Genuinely respect the wishes of the artist.
I know some people that have rare shit that BoC don't necessarily want out there.
If I were, in confidence, to give someone some of my outtake recordings or tracks from when I was younger and they decided to break that trust and show everyone I would be seriously hurt so I use that analogy in this case. I wouldn't want it to happen to me, they have that right to privacy.

Also, how the feck do they manage to get it to say XYZ backwards as well as forwards on the peel sessions radio rip?
Forwards it is "Ex Why Zee" backwards it is "Ex Why Zed" - I think that is perhaps why they use the American pronunciation as a bit of a hint, but I could be wrong.

First I would probably try to verify them before anything else. If they're real, I'd keep them private for the respect of the band, unless given permission to share. If they're fakes, I'd just upload online as such.

An exception though is if any of the tracks I find are full/clean versions of songs we've already heard, such as the website demos or the live tracks. I would probably put those somewhere like soulseek since we already know about them.

yes, I would probably post full versions of those if I were to come across them. Like I said we've already heard them, so putting out full versions wouldn't be wrong IMO.

I don’t think the “band’s wish” is that it be hidden, they just have no desire to formally rerelease it. Which makes sense given how far they’ve come, how hard it’d be to clear samples today, and how their broader, non-fanatic audience would likely respond to all this early lo-fi noodling.

The young men that made and released those early recordings would’ve been thrilled to know that people were loving them.

They should see the light of day without the brothers having to do any heavy lifting or introduction or endorsement of the material. These are artifacts of that era, and should be unearthed by fans or shared by one of the handful of people who are letting them collect dust.

So what you should do if you have them is rip them nicely, put a bitcoin address in the id3 tags of the rip, post that shit somewhere/anywhere where we’ll stumble upon it, and anonymously collect the $500 per release bounty that I have committed myself to paying (and others should commit to augmenting).
preparation for a dive.

Tbh, I'd keep it a secret because as much as I'd love to share that shit, I feel like it would be kind of disrespectful leaking their early works without consent and I don't think that they would want anyone to leak their early works in the first place (plus I think that they might still be planning to release that Bocset whenever that comes out). Also I wouldn't leak whatever I owned because Ik for a fact that if people found out that I owned rare BoC stuff, people would just pester me to leak whatever rare BoC material I owned or that they'd claim that whatever I owned is fake. lol

If I were to get my hands on the material by myself I'd try to contact them and ask for permission to upload it and then depending on the answer you know what would happen next. However if they were to personally gift one of those albums to me I probably wouldn't even dare to ask if I can share them or not, so it would stay with me and wouldn't tell anyone about it

I'd probably try and contact them and see if it's rare BoC material. and if it is, and they want it back or something, I'll give it to them.
