Live @ ATP - Track 2, Point Hope? (Hooper Bay)

Post by Juggle »

This is just something I happened across while listening to the All Tomorrow's Parties set. The seven and a half minute Track 2, (I've sometimes seen referred to as "Public Financing"), at a glance almost fits the run time of Point Hope from Hooper Bay. The track has a pretty abrupt start preceded by ~13 seconds of crowd noises, followed by ~3 seconds at the end leaves us with a pitch perfect run time of 7:16 (track fades into crowd cheering near the end, so it's hard to tell exactly when it finishes).

Considering Noatak is purported to be Track 7 of this same set, and that both tracks have a pretty similar "mature" sound, could we have another possible ID on a previously unheard track? Assuming that Track 7 is Noatak, I personally don't see it out of the ordinary for BOC to play another track from HB. So far, this is a thought I've only seen mirrored by a single YouTube comment. I found it interesting and wanted to see what you all thought, since I'm not exactly sure if this is a generally accepted idea or not.

This upload seems to be longer than the version I downloaded by a second or so, but the same track length still applies.

It could be anything honestly. It sounds like something that was left off Geogaddi, but considering we don't know what Hooper Bay sounds like save for Circle it could possibly be that too.

Sometimes I wish there was a way to figure out the unknown tracks we do have, but that's not going to happen until Boards releases any archival material.
Warning: This numerology post is not to be taken 2 seriously.

From BOCPages:
Transcription of the 37sec reversed sample used 2:36 and 6:45 of this track:
Voice 1: Organizers say their next step will be building coalitions, drafting the initiative, and planning a petition drive to get the issue on the ballot. The Massachusetts activists say they know what they want and they know they don't trust their legislators to deliver it. Such a direct democracy is typical of initiative states but in both Massachusetts and Connecticut public financing is seen as the most comprehensive solution to an election system dominated by fundraising. Democrats and Republicans appear to share this view.
Voice 2: I'm a capitalist, I mean, I have my own businesses.
Voice 1: Dr (Phillip Korman? Phil McCormick?) is a (physician and inventor?) from Carlisle, Massachusetts.

I originally considered the same possibility of Track 2 being Point Hope but I doubt they would include a voice sampling that references Massachusetts and Connecticut in a track that's named after a location in Alaska.

But then again who knows.

Sounds a bit like an early Cold Earth.

It could have, at the point of recording, not crossed their minds that music geeks like us would mull over reversed samples in tracks they never expected to go all that far to begin with. I personally speculate that they didn't mean much by the use of that specific vocal sample, since it just ended up getting reversed anyways.

I believe those tracks are from the Geogaddi recording sessions, or at least from the same era. They are too "refined" to be early BOC.

Bumping this thread so we can maybe try to find the source of the sample that they used

Perhaps someone who lives in Carlisle Massachusetts will find this and be able to?
I wait, tense... then disappointed

sounds like it's from some one-off news broadcast.

(i.e. never gonna be found unless someone happens to have a recording of a random news program on that random day)

This is most likely a news report on the "free the pike" protests in '95.

The guy is Phil McCormick, from Shelburne Falls. He's an inventor.

"Free The Pike", as in the Massachusetts Turnpike?
How does public financing of campaigns tie in with toll opponents? I'm not so sure it does.

This was a thing in '95 where a group was protesting a toll hike on the turnpike. They had a petition and a fundraiser made, but it didn't go through. They were also opposed to a few other proposed changes to the turnpike by the local government, such as public financing campaigns.

If the sample is from 95, doesn't this rule the track out as coming from Hooper Bay? BoC could have added the sample later on, I suppose, but they haven't done that with any other live tracks.

I found some newspaper articles of it from 1994.

I'm from Massachusetts and remember the "Free the Pike" thing, but I'm stumped as to why it would be sampled. The only possible connection I can think of is if it was from a WGBH news feature or something. Because we know BoC loves them some WGBH station idents. I've googled and seached YT and come up empty with any direct link.

A bit off topic but perhaps ATP-06 AKA "Children" was an outtake from IABPOITC? It's music video on the 2001 site was of pictures from the cover of the EP.
