I think it's a stretch to say they're presumably the same band. I'm sure in the 80s every town had a band making stuff like this which never got past the local scene. There's mountains of this stuff out there (and that's just the stuff which has made it on to the internet).

It's just two tracks which need an ID. Both happen to be 80s post-punk style, and are both being searched for in 2019. Beyond that, there is no similarity, personally I think there's no way they're the same band.
Well, maybe not presumably. But either way, as far as I can tell the vocalist sounds exactly the same in both recordings, but with a slight pitch difference.
Even if it's not the same band (which I doubt), "our" song is still getting a lot of attention and has better chances of being recognized :D

What is the origin of the 'mysterious song'? What is the basis for that assumption? Wouldn't that be an enormous coincidence?

I've always thought "a long time ago" sounded like it was by the Electric Guitars. Similar singing style and mood, but not quite enough.

Thanks! This makes a lot more sense now. Very interesting. Although that timeline is way off in regards to Boards of Canada, by the date and the uploads.

I've been following this one for a while. My gut tells me that this is a massive hoax, many years ago when I was young and stupid I posted one of my own songs on the 4chan paranormal board and claimed I had found a mysterious cassette in an abandoned building with this song on it, didn't expect much interest but the place went crazy and it got about 500 replies of people trying to decipher it.

I'm not saying that's proof that the Mysterious Song is also a hoax, I'm just saying that it's extremely easy for an unknown band or artist to invent a story like this to get a bit of recognition. For me, the song doesn't sound like it was recorded in the 80s at all it seems to be very cheaply and artificially aged in an attempt to make it sound like it's from the 80s. I don't think it's anything to do with the unidentified song on SXT.

I'm inclined to think the same. There's something odd about this Mysterious Song - the vocals sound is early 80s post punk but the chords and structure are very much mid 80's soft rock to me (86/87 era). I'm inclined to think this is a digital recording from the mid 00's probably by one guy (rather than a band) and then cassette aged.
We had a dream last night. We had the same dream.

Funnily enough I've started to wonder if the fretless bass track might not be a "modern retro" thing too. The more I listen to it, the weirder it gets to try and pin it to a time. I guessed at early 80s before because you'd think it would have a bit more FM sound to it *somewhere* if it were later, but those synth flourishes are kind of early to mid-80s, and the bass is definitely in that 83-87 window. It's not a synth track though is it, because you've got the "real instruments", bass, piano and possibly guitar with the synth as colour. Then you hear OK the synths aren't just those twinkles, there's the long string tones in the background for half of it, and what sounds like mellotron flutes or a synthy approximation of them doing fill ins. The piano being vaguely loosely out of tune and a bit roomy is also a weird choice in context, you'd think.

Plus it's an oddly circular tune, so, what, is it a jam or is it something off a soundtrack? I can hear it being closing credits music, somehow. It doesn't seem like, even for an album track it'd be something you put out without that kind of reason for it existing. It's an odd arrangement and set of instrumentation for a track of that era. But you can imagine that instrumentation on a soundtrack for sure. I've sort of thought since I first heard it that it might be religious/soundtrack/musical because of some of the forms are a little bit out of sync timewise for the period, like it's a late 70s vibe musically but it sounds kind of 80s, and you can get that a-few-years-late-stylistically thing with soundtracks. Somewhere after synths in soundtracks were all weird blippy stuff for sci-fi. And credit music toward the end of the mix? Yeah.

But then I just thought well maybe this is some of that library music we know they've done, as sacrificial stuff to sample? Anyway, I've overthought this about as far as my mind will take it, without trawling a list of movie soundtracks from 1983 so that's sort of where I'm at with my reasoning on it for now, and I wish anyone looking for it good luck.

One thing I've thought since Societas X Tape came out is that we might be surprised by which tracks were original BoC. The possibility that one of those super-library-music samples was actually them crossed my mind.

It would be just the sort of thing they'd do to put ambient electronic music that everyone assumed was them into the mix, while also including things they actually did that don't sound like their other music at all.

I've been listening to a lot of old school library music since the SXT and have heard so many songs with that same fretless bass vibe. I think it's a library track from Bruton/KPM/De Wolfe/Themes International and the like. The inclusion of Prospect by Paul Hart from Bruton and The Free Life by Alan Parker from Themes International indicates that BOC are fans of library music from that classic 70s/80s era. The Christian Chevalier track is also a library track I think. I just hope my collection is big enough to find the unknown fretless bass one but I doubt it.

Well shit, after that tip off to go looking at library music, I've found a different one than the one I was looking for. 1h30 the piano "twin peaks" one - Francis Rimbert & Frederick Rousseau-First Emotion
And just listen to some of the stuff on this list, if the fretless bass track isn't also somewhere on April Orchestra, there's some stuff on here that sounds SO MUCH like it could be

Fantastic. Is there a FULLY up to date track list somewhere? I'm worried some of these findings aren't being properly noted.

Maybe I'm a dummy but I can't hear the relation between the "fretless bass Julie & Candy" track and Julie & Candy. What am I missing? (I'm not a musician, if that helps)

Is it the bass line that starts at about 1:12 in the sXt track?
