WXAXRXP Box set: includes BoC's Peel Session, with XYZ

Well, I listened to it again and realized that the chords do change throughout, but it still sounds kind of unfinished, which is unusual for something that they decided to release officially. I just don't like fast drums, so it's a moderate disappointment.

^ I agree on most points. It isn't one of my personal favorites. There are some really interesting sounds and textures and I think, although the details are vague, that this track was performed entirely live to the extent that they do perform live, triggering everything by hand, and was fairly new at the time of recording. I think if they had decided to include it in MHTRTC or another album, it would have received quite a polishing. It doesn't fit in thematically, though, so maybe it was just considered an exclusive for the Peel Sessions. Again, a nice track from a technical standpoint, but I don't find myself listening to it very much as it lacks something.

I always seem to anticipate the end of xyz while listening to it, which is annoying.. Mostly because I don't want it to end.. But there is very little in the way of landmarks within the tune besides the ending.. So it's hard to tell where you are within the track.
I love it though.. Definitely missing something but I love all the glitching sounds and the bass drum

Re-listening to XYZ I realized this is a unique piece of Boards’ discography because it shows off such a variety of influences. The keyboard playing in the opening is reminiscent of a jazz solo. The drone that repeats later on is an electronic take on Indian classical music. The fast glitchy drums relate to modern electronica.

I put this track today early in the morning before going to work. This is my favorite time of the day to do something like this. And this track is nice. But I just can't get to their old stuff like XYZ. It just lacks for me. The melody at the beginning is very beautifull, but it feels like the track in middle just repeating it self. The whole another story is their more recent music. Most tracks from TH have strong beginning, the middle crescendo and some of them very amazing endings. Like sick times,Come to Dust, Semena of the Dead and so on.

The first third of XYZ is real nice. I don't mind the rest of the track, I just think it outstays its welcome a little. It could do with being 2 mins shorter, or being a bit more varied. An introduction of another melody would be quite lush.

Oh boo hoo lol truthfully I feel the exact opposite about it but again that is my honest opinion as well haha to me i feel it is a more mature album. Some will just never get it or get behind it. That’s fine. It seems more important to me now considering the current U.S. political climate and state of the world.... still... I feel as though JC is a “missed” masterpiece that will never fit in with the original “blissful” aesthetics that attracted people from their earlier albums.... but I get it....
I also disagree with many feelings about XYZ.... as a physical musician that has played everything manually... this is the sort of “improvy” live track that I love.... many great ideas incorporated.... distorted drones.... reverse guitar/string loops.... lush key leads.... strange drum patterns..... we have to realize that as musicians grow so do their skills and talents.... I think that track marked a turning point in concept.... I loved it and do love it! I hope we hear more improvy jammy songs from them....

I agree with this. TH is already aging well; it'll always be one of my favourites.

I struggle to be excited by this "new" thing which is 3 quarters as old as I am

all part of growing up I spose. 14 odd years ago sure this would have been pretty cool for adolescent me.

A lot more time could have elapsed with absolutely nothing... at least it is a long overdue re-release and along with other amazing performances by other hreat artists... seefeel....

I think they've just got round to releasing XYZ, I'm sure they've wanted to for a long time but they had other priorities. At lease it shows they still thinking about their older tunes

XYZ reminds me of Dragon Ball Z! I used to run many miles listening to this track... it gets me pumped more than most... especially when the fast beat kicks in... Reminds me of Goku as he leaves the hyperbolic time chamber after a long year of training.... now he is ready to take on the enemy...... lol

What if there's some kind of hint in the peel release about future activity. Probably not but it would be cool if it marked the start of archival releases for BoC.

Like luminousdusk said, it shows they're still reflecting on their older work. Not only that, but Warp have evidently stepped up their sample clearance game for this one, which is something that's necessary should we ever get an archival box set of some kind.
