Which WARP artist or artists have had the biggest impact on you not including BOC. My choice is Tyondai Braxton. The track "The Voilent Light through Falling Shards" is absolutely amazing. Its a claustrophobic mess that takes the guitar to a new unique level. I hope this topic doesnt bore anyone...impeach Bush.

Tyondai Braxton is such a small fish in the Warp roster.. he only did two remixes if I'm right. I'm a bit amazed that he had a mature impact on you.. Do you know Tyondai Braxton or something?

Plaid, (Chris) Clark, Autechre and of course Aphex... I really can't choose.

History That Has No Effect was his most recent LP that came out on JMZ Records. He just recently signed with WARP so I guess I cant count him in yet. Im really looking forward to his first with WARP due to come out sometime in the near future. You guys can listen to two tracks off HTHNE on this web page http://tyondai.jmzrecords.com/media.htm My next picks would be Aphex Twin and Chris Clark. This question is a no brainer for me; Autechre. They have so much music out there's always something that I'm in the mood for, whether it be more recent fucked up mechanical tinkering or earlier more melodic soundscapes. With any good artist they took a long time to grow on me and I'm still finding new things in their music with every listen.

Forget Warp!

AE, RDJ, Pusher, Clark, all those guys could easily exist on their own outside of ANY label. Warp is one of the least interesting labels anymore.

I have to agre that Warp has gone a little downhill lately, but they paved the way for a lot of indie electronic music labels today. As of right now I'm loving Sending Orbs, Benbecula, N5md, Darla, Merck (RIP), and Gooom (RIP). There's a shitload of awesome labels out there.

Songs like "4" and "Tha".

I mean, honestly, Richard has a more consistent 'i've never heard anything like this' effect for me than almost any other artist I've ever heard.

And "Tha" is just, well, the song I want played at my funeral. It's one of those perfect songs.

Warp used to be the best label for electronic music, they laid the path for others

But to give full credit to the label when the musicians are clearly the brilliant ones there is still a bit much, especially when Warp just releases mediocre shit half the time anyway.

I don't agree with you, in spite of the fact that they don't release as much quality as they where used to. I still like about 80% of what Warp put out over the years.

Another debate is if the label makes the artist or if the artist makes the label.

Music speaks for itself, whether you buy it from the artist themselves on a Sharpie-labeled CD-R or from a big time label. The label is simply the vehicle in which the music arrives. No disrespect to great labels who have carved out a very specific aesthetic for themselves, but by no means do I or any other musicians I know make music specifically with a label in mind.

So, to respond politely, I'd say the artists make the label, without a doubt!

I get your point but as a musician you sure need an advertising pillar to get your music into the open. Ok, nowadays there is internet.. but I don't think you should underestimate the influence of those labels back in the days. Certainly outside the mainstream world.

I never said Warp always sucked. I said they do now. I have an untouchable respect for their early catalog, as well as labels like Rephlex, Planet Mu, etc. It just seems to me that I'm very disenchanted with what those labels are all doing now.

Although that Voafose LP on Rephlex looks damn appealing. I'll be buying that for sure.
