For 51 days at the start of 1993 the world was transfixed by a siege at the Mount Carmel religious community, home to the Branch Davidians and their leader, David Koresh. An initial bid by the US government's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to storm the compound ended in disaster when the heavily armed Davidians opened fire. It ended in blazing mayhem when the buildings were set alight, killing 74. This excellent drama documentary thoroughly explores the events leading up to the siege, its long duration and bloody conclusion. The range of contributors is wide: FBI negotiators who still can't hide their regret that they couldn't persuade Koresh, a crackpot religious zealot who claimed he was "the second coming of Christ", to lead his followers to safety; and Branch Davidians who survived the carnage. Tellingly, none has a cross word for their former leader, of whom they speak in glowing terms.
