Re: Why I hope we never hear BoC's old albums
“I hope we never hear BOC’s old albums” is a notion I find completely alien.
With all due respect to Mike and Marcus’s wishes, a world with more BOC is better than a world with less.
Let me ask this: is anyone here unhappy that they are able to listen to Old Tunes 1/2, BOC Maxima, and R35TT?
Imagine a world where the leaks didn’t happen. Does anyone believe BOC would have been more engaged with the fanbase, or would have released more material? Better material?
For me, I can’t imagine anything on the unreleased albums that would make me appreciate their work less, or make me think less of them as artists. I think it would only provide a bit more insight into their evolution as artists.
I hope Mike and Marcus eventually see fit to give the whole back catalogue a proper release.
Failing that, if there are any new leaks, I hope they don’t see it as a negative but instead recognize that fans appreciate their music and simply want to hear more of it.

Definitely agree with you on this. I would really love to hear the fabled early works, and I'd think they are aware of how rabid we all are.Skyraider wrote:“I hope we never hear BOC’s old albums” is a notion I find completely alien.

Re: Why I hope we never hear BoC's old albums
On one hand, I want to hear these so much, the tiny snippets we have are sooo good.
On the other hand, this will most definitely piss the brothers off if any of them were ever leaked.
It's always rung in the back of my mind if they'll get mad if someone were to leak the full tracks of the snippets, (full duffy, full circle etc.)
Though BoC probably have leaked their old tracks, they just haven't told us. Such as live sets, Societas X Tape...
We could have a tonne of early songs, and we wouldn't ever know it.

Hey just wanted to chime in and say that while I totally respect them not wanting these early projects being released to the public, I’m also very thankful for what I’ve heard of them. White Water is my favorite BoC track ever, so I do hope that they one day consider releasing it officially. I had lost hope but since they released XYZ I feel like anything is possible. Sad they felt like their trust was broken tho when that was put out there, I just want more BoC music to proliferate the world with!

Re: Why I hope we never hear BoC's old albums
I'm struggling a bit with the ethics of even listening to their leaked older content.
They've made it clear they're unhappy with it being in the public domain.
Certainly downloading it from Youtube is illegal.
Are people wrong for loading them up to Youtube etc in the first place?
Personally some of my favourite songs come from their unreleased material, so it's an issue for me.

Re: Why I hope we never hear BoC's old albums
I think they were pissed off because these old releases were ideas which could later turn up as full tracks. Stuff like 747, drums in lots of later tracks etc. It took away the novelty effect for a lot of cool ideas. I imagine some people would be pissed off if "new album" consists of tunes based on old tunes tapes. We might have already had more releases if that didn't happen.
These are some not so obvious ones I might have noticed. New Seeds - r35tt a14, Dayvan Cowboy - r35tt b04 (especially the drums)

Re: Why I hope we never hear BoC's old albums
I don't see The Bros planning to recycle old material and getting mad because leaking the tapes would prevent them from recycling. The Bros walk forward with new ideas and themes, they don't tend to reuse old ideas much.
Plus, if they did recycle structures and patterns, nobody would care because they would be considered part of their music identity and signature.
Why did they cut off a lor of people? They seem to be odd balls and very private. They probably got mad because circulating these tapes was kind of opening a public door to their personal lives and early works and memories.
At the time they might have felt betrayed because the tapes were given to close friends and family members, thus the person who leaked them, knew The Bros very well. To us, who are not part of The Bros' cohort, this attitude (cutting off people without maybe having many evidences to do it) might seem extremist and maybe paranoic.
I think that the tapes were considered too rudimentary to be exposed to everybody and maybe The Bros thought at the time that the leakage could make them look bad. They seem to work a lot on their music, so exposing tapes that sound kind of primitive, would be negative towards the general perception of them being perfectionists.

It's not "nasty" at all to distance yourself from people who disrespect your wishes and share unpublished music that was given in confidence as a personal gift.drillkicker wrote:It's pretty nasty to cut people off for something like that. Trying to keep something a secret while also sharing it isn't going to work. I don't get the point in trying to keep music secret, anyway. The point of music is that it's vibrating in the air to be heard by everyone around.
Regardless, I don't listen to BoC anymore so I don't care either way. If they release old stuff I might give it a listen but it's not something I'm waiting for. There's plenty of better music out there that's available to everyone.
I'm a writer and I've shared unpublished stories with my friends and family to get feedback and just share what I've been working on; if they went and posted them online for everyone to read I would be angry and extremely disappointed. No different with music.
Re: Why I hope we never hear BoC's old albums
I don't think that you should feel bad for listening to the leaked recordings. The official BOC YouTube account has a playlist that includes fan-made videos of these songs. Surely that must mean that the brothers have embraced the fact that these tracks are out there and that they are as beloved as the official releases, right? I feel like the anger that they have for the folks who put these tracks out there is exclusively for those individuals and not fans who've enjoyed the music.sonickel77 wrote:I'm struggling a bit with the ethics of even listening to their leaked older content.

This ethos of the fan-made video is similar in my mind to the way Nine Inch Nails and The Grateful Dead have embraced fans trading recordings of live performances.
Just a gut feeling. I could be wrong.

"Why I hope we hear BOC's old albums" - because they are beautiful snapshots of the artists as young men. Imagine a shitty, run of the mill , teenage garage band making 4 track recordings - if the old tunes/AFOT compilations are anything to go by, this is NOT that. It's unfettered creativity.
I will echo the ethics surrounding the leaks are hard to compartmentalize and grapple with, though.
My opinion of course.

How long have they been licensed under Warp ? I feel like they never used to be but i could definitely be wrong.NorthernPlastics wrote:Old Tunes is registered, not too sure about the R35TT stuff. https://www.ascap.com/repertory#ace/wri ... Not sure how long exactly, but it's nothing new. I remember seeing these listings a couple of years ago.Roswell wrote:How long have they been licensed under Warp ? Still, it's hard not to get excited about what may be around the corner, even after all this time!

Re: Why I hope we never hear BoC's old albums
I'm hopeful (not sure why) that if there is a new album released, they may release archival material too. Their whole catalog was rereleased on vinyl after Tomorrow's Harvest and that was a clever move. Tomorrow's Harvest and its ARG got a lot of attention. Tons of people joined this forum in 2013 (Many who have sadly gone into hibernation due to the long wait) and then Warp rereleased the back catalog to bring everyone up to speed.
I hope they do the same thing with this hypothetical next album/project but with archival material. Especially if it's indeed the final transmission from BOC.

Warning: This numerology post is not to be taken 2 seriously.
Re: Why I hope we never hear BoC's old albums
definitely, personally I can’t see any reason they’d copyright the songs unless there were plans to re-release them. that being said there were plans, but of course they could’ve decided to go a different route.Sherbet Head wrote:Still, it's hard not to get excited about what may be around the corner, even after all this time!
