I've got a much better (I think) version of "Lick" now, from Old Tunes II B; definitely better timing, and I think those synths sound tastier. It's not written in stone necessarily, but it is free to download.

...if anyone's still here, at least. I like how people enthusiastically jumped in on this idea with 'yes, but let's make it a collaborative project," and I'm like cool, What do you guys think about a tracklist, a title, who wants collab together on single songs? Maybe we can hash it out and vote on stuff?

*crickets*

No worries. Just.. if we're gonna collaborate, then we need to collaborate lol Or I'll just naturally end up making it myself, albeit in a year or something. Then again, the main reason I started this thread, was to gauge the interest to help determine how much of a priority I should make it relative to everything else I wanna do.

To be clear though, a collaborative project does have a lot of appeal to me, and I'm sincerely interested in sharing ideas and deciding on things together if people want to get involved. I'm interested in what people think of the tracklist I posted, and I'm interested in tracklists others might have? I've thought about it being a double album, but that's all the more work to do. Thoughts and suggestions or contributions to instrumentation are welcome, or thoughts on mixing. Interested to hear what people think about conservatively altering or expanding *a few* song structures somewhat, or if they should remain as much like the originals as possible..etc. Like I mentioned extending Solarium somewhat; starting the same but then shifting out of the low pass sound, and bring the beat into light..etc.

I'm really interested about all of it. I have a lot of ideas I'm throwing out, but none of it's written in stone. Sharing a love for music is one of the most engaging, stimulating things I could do socially, and sharing a love for BOC is inspiring in this context. And I know how much BOC fans appreciate their music, so I by no means believe I know the best way to cover these songs.

Ayyy Awesome take on Alpha Rainbow! I love it. Synths sound really juicy, and the playing is on point. I like how the melody sits in the mix, too. Sounds like you maybe have longer experience producing. Interesting in working with you on more if you might be. Your take brings up one thing I welcome people to hash out...how different or similar, do we keep the covers to the original. This was pretty different, obviously, adding the beat. And the beat was kinda heavy, too. It reminded me of Bassnectar's heavy hitting drums, if I can make the comparison (not a fan of all of his stuff, but some is really good IMO). But I dig it. I think reimagining things can be cool when they're in good taste, but I was curious how others felt.

Here's a cover of B18

I might make some further tweaks; maybe try some alternative synths, but nonetheless, it's free to download.

UPDATE: Nevermind about free downloads for the time being lol. I intend to make everything from this project available for free, but I guess I need to figure out the legality of that. I assumed that there wouldn't be any legal issues with distributing covers when they're free, and no samples are used, but I guess there's still copyright issues with that? Maybe even an issue with streaming covers for free? :(

I don't know, but if anyone has insight/advice in regards to this, please let me know? Or especially if anyone knows how to contact Boards of Canada and/or their legal representation about getting permission, pleeease let me know? My heart's been really set on doing this project lately, and I want to do everything exactly right/respectfully by the brothers.

Here's a cover of She is P:

Or a draft of 2 morning's of work, at least. I extended the song length a bit. The guitar supplementing one of the synths is kind of experimental; might do something different there; might change other things; might abandon this project entirely lol.

I don't know, because everything I've found in my search regarding royalties indicates that a person covering a song has to pay royalties even if they're making the cover available for free. It seems that for every single download, the artist is obligated to pay a fee, even if it's non-profit. And apparently, it might even apply to streams, too? Which I know people post non-profit covers all the time and nothing comes of it, but a whole ass album for download? And all the time/effort required to make that, only to potentially have to pay to make it available for free? Lol.

Wouldn't be a concern if had an established career as a musician, but I'm a mere retail worker making enough money for my 1 bedroom apartment with my girlfriend. Otherwise yeah, I'd probably pay royalties up front to make this thing happen. That's another thing; I always assumed royalties were based on a percentage of profits made from covers/samples, but apparently royalties have to be paid up front.

Not really. I kind of deprioritized the project after seeing this thread die lol. The idea of sharing it with other BOC fans was a big part of the appeal; at least in the short term, so I appreciate someone finally swinging by after like, several months lol. But sharing the excitement with the community would've just made me wanna put the project before my other music, but otherwise, I've got a shit ton of original material to develop more and produce. But If I have enough years on this planet left to work on music before it truly turns into a dystopian hellscape, then it's an inevitability that I complete a full covers album, or complete it with other fans. I have all kinds of ideas; different things to try. I have a new hi def, sample based midi called Iris 2, that has a pretty cool metallic, sort of bell-sounding instrument that I'd like to try in Zander Two, for instance.

So yeah, basically one (or especially more than one) might be able to nudge the progress. I haven't fucked with any of them since "She is P," which I would tweak a lot more. But I think my production capability's have gotten slightly better; always gradually learning a little more there, and I also got a little new gear, which certainly helps.

I do have one idea to resolve the royalties issue. From what I've read, a creator has to pay 9 cents per download of a cover, even if it's non-profit and sample free. It also has to be paid preemptively; IE I can't just have a percentage of profits go to the copyright holder (which would make way more sense to me). So I was thinking maybe I could put it up on Bandcamp, for instance, with a minimum of 9 cents per song, just to cover the cost of licensing. I also thought about maybe 18 cents per song; double the license cost just because I could then have the songs pay for themselves, and further rounds of licensing, because of annoying way the law seems to work.

Plus it's not like it couldn't just get shared p2p after that, and I wouldn't care lolol. I would just wanna make this thing, and cover my bases legally.

Thank you so much; I put a lot of effort into it; could still surely use improvement, though. As someone new to producing, I just in general feel far away from getting to the standard I've set for myself. Like ideally, the desire of the whole thing, is to have all these Old Tunes songs have the production sound as professional as MHTRTC or Geogaddi..etc. Not necessarily sound exactly like one of those albums; could sound like a different band..etc But I'm far from being as professional of a producer as the brothers, so it's kind of a lofty goal, and one that'll necessarily take time, unless others get involved. Still think it's cool to hear decent covers, though, along the way to hopefully pro-sounding covers.

Anyway, just because you said that, I made my BOC covers available for free download again temporarily on my soundcloud lol. Hope you enjoy :)

Also, did you/anyone hear She Is P? Anyone think it almost sounds kinda metal? That wasn't really intentional lol (although I like metal). Just one good example of like, Well, here's a version of this...the sound I was going for? Not quite, but kind of interesting nonetheless lol

To be honest I think the metal feel to She Is P is fitting

Also, I've been working on numerous other songs lately; and originals are a big priority for obvious reasons, but say I feel like working on some BOC again soon; anything you (or any BOC fans) might be particularly interested in hearing? Be it more work on a cover I've already shared (since 'Lick' is the only thing that really even comes close to approaching a final sound) or another I listed, or any other Old Tunes? I have a few versions of Sequoia I never uploaded; one played with guitars from last year, and one from a few months ago with synths. I think both are pretty cool, and also pretty amateur sounding lol Another rework could probably sound pretty dope, though.

Sequoia is one of my favorite tunes from AFOT, you should definitely upload them

Ayy I'm glad you dig it :D I still think it's a neat iteration. I'll tell you an example of where my head was sort of at with that, but I don't know if some hear might scoff, or might totally feel me lol, but I'm really into the trip hop genre (of which some people loosely associate BOC with, of course) and my favorite trip hop album is Massive Attack's Mezzanine. I absolutely love the style and the mood of that album, and I hate that there's nothing else out there that really explores certain aspects of that style. Namely, the subtle use of metal elements/sections in a trip hop context, and mixing the genres in a way that to me, feels seamless. I want to explore certain aspects like that with my own stuff, and I'd say I was somewhat aiming for that with that cover, but I just think it could use a lot more before it could fully become what I have in.

Not at all to say, I wanna do BOC covers Massive Attack style lol...just some insight into my influences, and the overall palette of sounds I'm trying to experiment with.

Duuude, Davie Addison is the shit; absolutely beautiful. I'd be content if Davie Addison and B15 were the last songs I ever heard before I die. I'd say that about a lot of BOC songs, though. The only reason it wasn't high on my list of considerations, is because I hadn't thought of anything that seemed like an interesting take on it; as with a lot of those more ambient, almost classical-esque pieces.

Sequoia might have been the catalyst for wanting to do this whole project. It's one of my favorites, too, especially because the final melody in the song; such palpable emotion there. However I always honestly felt Sequoia could use some tweaks; like certain parts are more repetitive than I'd like (but not the last melody lol) making it feel less repetitive is sometimes as simple as adding variation to the beat, though, or any number of things like that, rather than say, shortening an entire section. I never got to a point of playing with that sort of thing, though.

OH and if you're giving Mezzanine a spin, Angel, Dissolved Girl, and Group Four are the ones that incorporate a subtle bit of metal aspects. The title track is stylistically worth pointing out, too, for this context. Some might appreciate Exchange? I love the whole album, but it's definitely different from BOC; more mainstream, but not in a bad way IMO.

And alright, you talked me into uploading a couple drafts of Seqouia lol; at least temporarily. If nothing else, maybe they'll illustrate how far I've come so far as a home producer since last April lol. I do like the guitar for the most part, in that version. The beat in both of them is probably the most glaringly amateur thing, but I think that's improve a lot since.

True, for a group that has used a lot of older material on their albums, I don't understand why they didn't choose Davie Addison as a vignette track

I support this idea of making R35TT covers. it's my 3rd favorite by BoC. I might make a cover too to add to the collection.
