Paul Russel's Piece in Possible HQ?
Found this on the magic window discord server. I don't know if this is just me but it sounds a LOT better than the rip we have.
It's partial, sadly.

ahah so sorry zephyr. I wanted to mess with you a tiny bit but didn't expect you to go ahead and make a post on twoism
Yeah it's Dave's rip. almost no one shared it before because we were waiting for whoever this dave is to make a higher quality rip but I was told that the cassette degraded too much since it's been so many years.

Why does it sound slowed down? And who is Dave? Is he a real traditionalist?Zephyr Method wrote:https://rareboc.ax.lt/davebocbocbocboc wrote:Newbie, what's Dave's rip?TheStatPow wrote:ahah so sorry zephyr. Re: Paul Russel's Piece in Possible HQ?
I have a hard time believing the tape itself is bad. The wow and flutter on these rips + the loud hiss points to Dave probably using one of those cheap USB PPOS walkmen from Amazon. Also, a worn tape usually don't cause excessive w&f, it's usually more prone to dropouts and mistracking (unless it's a really dried out 70's philips tape or something)
I think he could make a good rip if he either sends it to a professional or gets himself a nice deck, tunes the azimuth to the tape, and uses dolby.
I think these sound quite credible honestly, especially the for the fact that it doesn't seem to have any of that horrible digital noise reduction that's present on the current rip floating around.

Hiya, dave(ramage) here...
I did send my tapes up to Techboy in 2017, so I'd guess that what he's put on rareboc is as good as it's probably gonna get? He did let me know that one snapped when he was working on it, so they were of a fragile nature it seems.
I did rip them fairly soon after I got them back in 1998, via a Technics tape deck (cannae mind the model, something like this: https://www.cassettedeck.org/technics/rs-bx606).
I burned the WAVs to CDR and hardly played the tapes after that, had no need.
And I didn't use any noise reduction, I think, but someone with better ears could work that out I guess.
Never been an audiophile, sorry.
The tapes were BASF and TDK, you can see them on my Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/90734237@N00/32973057570/
Sorry it's not more exciting news, am sure there'll be something better to look forward to soon

Was it always known that Old Tunes was 1991-1995? That is pretty neat info there!ravedamage wrote:Hiya, dave(ramage) here...

Re: Paul Russel's Piece in Possible HQ?
Techboy shared this on Discord back in July 2019, he shared the rips + Dave's message explaining how he got them, we got asked by Tech to not share these in the public since he planned to make a proper rip of the tapes, though they kept getting distributed across members from various servers, me and a few others kept bugging Techboy like once every 6 months to see if he got a chance to rip them but he would tell us he still didn't get any time to do so. Around 2 weeks ago we asked again and he said the tapes were damaged so that's gg for them, I guess these rips are the best quality we'll ever get.
15Dreams (aka IkeaVEVO) attempted to fix the playing speed for the Boc Maxima one in Ableton, using the tracks sourced from MHTRTC and Hi Scores as a reference, it took me some time to get used to how Whitewater sounded now but since then that edit of the rip became the only way I listen to Boc Maxima now, I feel it sounds way better than the other rip that is floating around (especially if you compare Rodox Video) plus it has a somewhat more accurate speed, I'd suggest to try and do the same.

Thank you so much for never using noise reduction.

I hadn't really dug too deeply into this yet. Just listened to the version of Mansel on these rips. Sounded like it was possessed! It was actually quite fun to hear it like that.

Oh alright. Third gen rip explains it. Still, that's a treasure you have (had) there.

Re: Paul Russel's Piece in Possible HQ?
hi!
Trying to get a decent rip from Dave's tapes is still something I occasionally revisit on a rainy weekend. I managed to splice the one that split and get a rip without extreme pitch flutter and with the pitch and speed synced using mhtrtc tracks. But the fidelity was very bad, and I'm using a de magnetised and clean tascam 4 track deck, so not a heap of shit. So I reckon it's just that the cheaper tapes they were copied on to haven't really coped with years in the cupboard.
At this point probably the sensible thing for me to do is post it back to Dave and leave those where they are!
btw, fwiw, I reckon the boc maxima rip, even compared to the "flac" that goes around and the remasters, despite its imperfections, is the best one going.
