New "Play by Numbers" description

Post by outhudd »

Just spotted this today. There was a description posted on Discogs from someone who has heard the Play by Numbers CD. He says it was repressed to CD in 1997 for archive purposes. I don't think this previously known about Play By Numbers.

There's a new description of "Wouldn't You Like To Be Free?" there:
for the last minute of "wouldn't you like to be free?" everything just becomes soaked in reverb and all kinds of effects until it just becomes white noise at the end.
I think that becomes the third description of a track on this release? (after the Jockey Slut article and the Italian music journalist).

The full comment:

tildevplus on discogs re Play By Numbers CD
I have heard this, i know someone who has a copy of this but none of the others, it is legitimate as I have heard the full version of "wouldn't you like to be free?" and it wouldn't make sense for someone to just re-record all of the material for a laugh. They understand what they have and they will not upload it, not for any amount of money because they wouldn't want to experience the absolute shit storm that would follow. They do know that other people definitely have the other unreleased albums and its just a matter of time before they appear online (the band has also referenced this in interviews) but it seems like everyone is just way too scared to pull the trigger and i dont blame them. It wouldn't make sense to take photos of it either as there is no album art. I wanna point out though that for the last minute of "wouldn't you like to be free?" everything just becomes soaked in reverb and all kinds of effects until it just becomes white noise at the end. I dont wanna do a whole write up but to me personally it sounded interesting (guitars as synthesizers) but not amazing, if they had stuck with what they sounded like at the time of the recording i think their careers would have ended up differently

Interesting comment, I always assumed that due to the albums age that BOC were never happy for it to be released from a quality control perspective - an opinion I've based entirely on the tiny snippet of that track that's been available online - the clip always seemed to sound wishy washy (although this could be the terrible 128kbps down sampling you used to get when file sharing in the early 00's with dialup) - without further context I hadn't even considered that it could be deliberate, perhaps we're only hearing the beginning of the described meltdown at the end

Maybe one day we'll find out for sure **wistfully looking out to the sea**

At the point at which you’ve painted the Mona Lisa, I think it’s fine if the world sees your awkward childhood sketchbooks… it’s not going to diminish anyone’s assessment of your genius.

Oh yeah, I stumbled across this recently. Interesting description, I could definitely see Wouldn't You Like To Be Free turning into a noise soundscape at the end.

I definitely believe this more than Scaruffi's report.

there is also a track on the random 32 tracks tape that has the exact same chord progression and key but is just an acoustic version
this is also an interesting quote too. wonder if he's mistaken or if he knows more about some of the tracks that were leaked than we do... assuming its not a troll of course

B04 has been speculated to be "Numerator" so could be either case.

Maybe that's what we get in SXT? You know, that unidentified shoegaze song.

What if like, the only reason we haven’t heard these records is that the Sandisons lost their copies in a hard drive crash years ago, can’t find any of the cassettes or CDs they burned, and are just waiting for someone who still has a copy to eventually rip and share it somewhere online?

Someone should do them a real solid and upload their copies of the early releases.

You were close but far at the same time.

Wouldn't You Like To Be Free is referenced on SXT, or more the other way around.

The title is a reference to Grace Jones's Slave To The Rythm, which is why WYLTBF ends with no rythm as it fades into noise.

I think it's cool of him not to release it. M&M acted really weird and cut off ties with a bunch of people when Old Tunes was leaked and sold by some "Prince Murat" which is sad.
One more thing, the fact that he says it fades off to white noise means he probably has it in cassette form which is interesting.

I understood that as meaning the music goes off into guitar feedback, I imagined something like the middle part of MBV - Feed Me With Your Kiss.
Rather than meaning tape noise.

Well I'm pretty convinced it's a legit tape/cd and not some faker making shit up. He uploaded a 600x600 pixel cover of PBN. See here.

I wonder if PIC made this image?

Also I have this neat little 600x600 cover art of CV1. Not sure it it's legit or not, and I completely forgot where I found it, except for how it was a random music metadata site.

Image

Also note that it says the year is 97 in the cover art. This confirms during the cd represses they made new cover art for their old stuff. This is also obvious since C3 uses a font from 1993, despite being made in 87.

I thought he said that there was no cover art... How would he get this image?

Well, I can see staple dents on the rim of the image, so considering the HQ picture, I think this guy definitely has a copy. :)

The person who uploaded the higher quality scan of the PBN artwork isn't the same guy (tildevplus) who gave the sonic description of tracks off of PBN, at least I don't think so

But it is interesting to note that there was definitely a booklet/other art for Play by Numbers, at least on first gen copies. I assume tildevplus' friend didn't get PBN directly from the bros/someone who knew the bros, but rather had it copied from another leaker onto a new CDR

Funny how many trolls and lies there've been with BOC. I've gotten to the point where even a gullible person like me, doesn't trust/believe anyone.

Unless he offers some kind of proof, I'm not inclined to believe him. Notice how he only described the song we've heard before.
Warning: This numerology post is not to be taken 2 seriously.
