What're your thoughts about New Order?
Even though that band came out of the ruins of Joy Division, and despite the fact I find Bernard Sumner's style to be dreary 'n monotonous, they were a distinctive aspect of 80s New Wave.
To be honest, I haven't really gotten around to going through their music that much, so I don't really have an opinion. I have a feeling they're more to my taste than Joy Division though.

A little aside: At work, when a new online order at our store is placed our work phones will blurt out "New order."

If my arthritis wasn't acting up, I'd be shaking my decrepit dad rock fist at the sky right now.

In other news, I'm listening to the new Arctic Monkeys record right now, and I do not get it.

Of all the things the you coulda said! I'm the opposite.
The Car is probably the album release I was looking forward to the most this year. One self-confessed AM nutter here.

What didn't you get about it? I'd be interested to know. :)

Well, I've only listened once, and at 35 minutes it's not hard to get through, but I don't really have any interest in hearing it again. Not at the moment anyway. Arctic Monkeys are good at making catchy pop/rock songs, and clearly they weren't going for that with this record. Instead it's just over-produced same-y sounding songs that border on lounge music. For a minute I thought they were going for a Ween-type record, trying to show they could play different genres with tongue-in-cheek, but I don't think that's the case here.

I can take or leave AM anyway, so it's not a great disappointment. I was mostly just curious.

Bjork. I loved her singles in the 90s, Hyperballad, Bachelorette, Isobel, and I would go to bat for Play Dead. But almost everything she's done since I just can't get into and it seems to be the stuff people really enjoy most. Just don't get the structure of it and the sonic appeal

Interesting that. I agree that the short runtime isn't very challenging and not much sticks on a first impression but I believe it's a grower.
The new songs lend themselves more to Last Shadow Puppets than Monkeys with the string arrangements. I'm more impartial towards the new style because groups I'm already familiar with like The Divine Comedy and Tindersticks make the most out of the orchestral aspects.

Alex's need for perfection means that AM's records now come once in a blue moon so I have been lapping it up. though the record is only a few days old. (that said, Sculptures of Anything Goes is probably my pick so far for standing out of the bunch.)

Ironically enough I agree with Tool. I have tried many-a-time to do it but fuck man. Forget about it.
And before anyone says anything, I do it for The Great Turn, not goddamn Tool.

Ah, there's loads, but here's a handful to get me started...

The Flaming Lips
I fell in love with the track Race for the Prize, so I bought the album and massively struggled to get through the pretentiousness of it all. Every other FL song I've heard has given me a similar disgusting vibe too. Sorry.

Wet Leg
The new indie-rock darlings currently taking the world by storm, but it all sounds super bland and uninspiring to me. Heavy 'industry plant' vibes with these.

Oasis/Blur
Ok, so I don't actively dislike either of these bands, but here in the UK they've been put on some enormous pedestal in which they're viewed as our greatest exports. Massively overrated.

Muse
Just, no.

I can tolerate GnR slightly more than the others, but really it's all quite shit lol

My apologies. Maybe I'm not listening to the right stuff, though. As I said, RFTP absolutely bangs, so in theory, I'd expect to at least enjoy some of their other material. Unfortunately, everything else that I have heard has not resonated with me in the slightest.

If you can think of any Lips tunes I may jive with, please feel free to point me in the right direction and I'd be happy to give 'em another whirl.

Music is subjective. :D
Even I have to admit some of their poppier tracks have outright laughable lyrics and absurd themes, and sometimes that's off-putting, but in most cases for me it's refreshing.

I'd be happy to throw a few tracks your way. Two non-studio album songs here.

Worm Mountain (from Embryonic)

Do It! (featuring Yoko Ono)

Peace Sword (from Ender's Game soundtrack)

Look... the sun is rising

Silver Trembling Hands (from Embryonic)

Oh and prog rock.
PREPOSTEROUS. I will not stand by and hear this prog slander!

Although, turning that statement on it's head, there is one prog band I just don't get.

Porcupine Tree. I rather liked it when Steven Wilson was at the helm with "On The Sunday of Life" and "The Sky Moves Sideways" for it's floydian flourishes, even though they weren't all that original. But this years Closure/Continuation just felt really lacklustre and too calculated and sterile. It does what it intends to do without bringing anything new to the table, I've tried to listen in various settings and locations. Nope. Apologies Mr. Wilson.
Maybe it lacked a bit of oomf. :|
Just sounded like Wilson and the band had to record it instead of wanting to.
Clarification: Porcupine Tree are ruddy amazing and possibly one of my favourite prog acts. :D (But Closure/Continuation is still a lacklustre misstep.)
