In A Beautiful Place vinyl colour

Hey everyone.

A question I’ve been meaning to ask for a little while on here. I bought In A Beautiful Place on blue vinyl from Warp back when it was first released all those years ago. My copy had a slight defect on it, I’m not quite sure how to explain, but it was badly pressed and there’s a sort of smear of extra vinyl on the surface. It still plays, but doesn’t sound amazing on the darker patch. I meant to send it back, but also didn't want to miss out on the blue edition (which I think had sold out) so kept it.

I didn’t see any other blue copies until relatively recently. A friend showed me his, much lighter - sky blue copy, just like on Discogs. Huh, I thought. Mine is loads darker. Then I picked up a copy in a second hand store a few months back for £30, also this same sky blue. I asked around on Twitter and it seems that everyone I spoke to has this shade.

So, I’m wondering, is my original darker copy some sort of weird one-off? Or does anyone else have the darker shade?

I have a light blue version myself, if you hold it up to the light you'll see it has a marble effect, a mix of lighter and darker areas. I'm going to assume the dark vinyl is simply from the process of mixing the colours together and maybe some just turned out darker than others due to the mixing of colours.. Some got more light blue some got more dark blue

Interesting. Yeah, my light blue has a very slight marbling if held under a light. At first glance it's a solid sky blue. I suspect you're right, though I'd very interested to see if anyone else got a much darker one too, or if mine really is just some weird defected copy (with the odd surface issue).

Mine is nearly all light blue but it does have a few dark blue bits. From what I remember the sound is ok but I have noticed over the years that coloured vinyl does tend to have more issues with surface noise, at least in my experience

I think my copy sounds great

Trans Canada on white vinyl however not so great

I have both the sky blue and the blue one (and 2013 repress).

Yeah, it seems the consensus is that it was just a odd batch of blue for the sky blue release...but it's such a significant color difference that one should snag a copy anyway.

That is weird -- I got mine as soon as it was first released in 2000 and its kinda in-between blue from the thread pics, but closer to the lighter ones. Perfect press. Not close at all to the dark blue though. No marbling at all detected on mine - solid color.

You can't exactly call me a conniseur of BoC vinyl, but this thread recently reminded me of when I finally snapped up the twoism ep on cd last week. Uninterested? Alas for this copy of mine has an off centre label.


Now... which one of yous lot will pay a grand for this ultra-super-dupa rarity copy?
