Yeah, Chinook is a name given to a type of military helicopter. I would suppose at best it's a double meaning.

With Dawn Chorus I would think it's more probable to be a double meaning with the electromagnetic phenomena due to solar activity (which is still a part of nature) supporting my hypothesis.

Waco Siege pretty much ties into what I mentioned about cults and irrationality in general.

I won't even entertain the 'birds aren't real conspiracy'. It's not interesting or compelling in the slightest imo

Look I respect the post I do, but the thing is, it's just another personal perspective. I think in general for many people when they start to over-analyze stuff and make a lot of wild and "coincidental" connections, they tend to forget the fact that it's just another highly suggestive perspective which isn't really based on any objective truths, if there are any at all.

Who knows what they really tried to get across here. And who knows how serious they actually take everything. Maybe they are just having some fun and toying with some ideas and philosophies. I guess it's up to each person to find their meaning in it, clichéd as that may sound. Not saying it shouldn't be discussed of course, just saying that it's easy to get tunnel-visioned into your own perspective. I certainly been there.

For me the music really speaks for itself. The energy a track carries just gives you the feeling that you know, but it is not a rational knowing for me. It's like I understand without intellectually understanding it and for me that is where the magic happens. Which isnt to say I never like to ponder about the possible meaning behind something. It's just that I clearly see the futility of it in the end.

I have no problem with what water can is saying, I think we can all agree that his musings have credence. My issue is that they are so blindingly obvious and have been stated a million times over here in many conversations and in many ways. The confidence in the content is a little awkward to read.

Personally I believe that they really like old 70's-80's horror/apocolypse films and wanted to soundtrack one of their own as a concept to put out as an album. They probably rewatched Threads and thought that they could do a really bleak end of the world-post apocalyptic-human bounceback effort narrative. And again, this is a widely talked about angle on here to the point it's not even an angle, it's kinda just plausible waffle with no depth or real way of proving in any way.

I did find this whole thread to be interesting at points, and maybe a preface to say something I've wanted to for a while now that might be wholly unpopular, and earn me quite a bit of wrath.

Would a Boards of Canada album even be culturally relevant, or as emotionally poignant anymore?

I've thought about this a lot while listening to the older albums in my car. For me, Boards of Canada is a musical phenomenon that exists in quite a special place in history, before everything in the world became completely memetic and digitized. Their whole music occupies a space (that used to exist) in generation x psyche that held an almost naive and childlike optimism for the future when members of this generation were in their 20's and early 30's.

The problem with releasing another Boards of Canada album for me was that their whole art's aesthetic and the psychological atmosphere in which their art dwelled can probably no longer be conjured by the same guys who had seemingly embraced nihilism as a whole in 2013 with TH.

In short, the childlike sense of wonder we see in early albums which came from two young men in the 90's probably can't be created with the same authenticity.

Another BOC album would be like the recent reboot of Beavis and Butthead: just a work lost in the age trying to reach out to former glory while mainly only appealing to the hardcore fans wanting a nostalgia trip.

Maybe it's over and it should be, go ahead and rip me a new one.

No, you are right. It's what happens to any band who formed a strong aesthetic early in their career.
Bands have a body of work in their "prime", they grow up, music around changes or catches up to them so for them to recreate the same sound as before won't have the same impact as before, it might even sound rehashed and bland. Also when artists become more succesful, their production gets better which usually means it sounds worse, losing it's character, the reason it hit just right.
There are not many bands or artists that can traverse this by staying the same succesfully or change it up and still continue to be them. Radiohead always springs to mind in that regard.

TH was a departure and the points above are possible reasons to why people were dissappointed or on the fence when it dropped.
Of course, once people gave it time to bed in with repeat listens it came into it's own and became a BoC album but if familiarity wasn't pursued by the listener, it still would be a lesser album to them.

Any further output by them WILL be recieved in the same way or even extreme. Tough to be an artist with such a strong legacy over large expanse of time.

Maybe that period in their life is just over, maybe not.

But if Boards of Canada were to announce an album TODAY and the artwork was some grainy 70's photo and the tracks had names that conjured images of old nature documentaries, and bizarre occult references would the fan base actually be cool with that? I feel like if that's what we as a community would go crazy over then we are a wholly uninspired and unimaginative lot.

Maybe we boxed them in and put them on a pedestal to the point where if the duo released anything other than a "Boards of Canada" album then we (as well as the entirety of music critics out there) would simply be outraged.

It's like we demand of them to be simultaneously groundbreaking and progressive while delivering more of the same.

Maybe it's us who are stuck in the past and can't let go, while the duo has completely moved on and are happy with making an occasional Nevermen remix.

The more pedantic and obnoxious the audience become it probably seems like more of an empty obligation to make new stuff. In the past (1998-2009 especially) kind of been like Boards and their fans have always surfed off each other's energy -- sometimes they have even include motifs ideas and media from the fans responses.

As long as they stay weird they make music just for me. Its much less about 70s wildlife soundtracks and rap beats really.
