Does anyone get chills from the way Societas opens?

Coming up on the fourth year since Societas was released and to this day, I still get butterflies whenever I hear Associations.

It transports me back to June 23rd, 2019 when we were going to get new content from BOC and nobody knew what it was. I remember listening eagerly and that tension building riff from the Jasper Van't Hof song embodied that mystery. Was this music by them? Old favorites of theirs? Outtakes from their archives? At this point nobody really knew.

And that anticipation stayed the whole time I listened to it too. It was a truly magical experience and I'm very happy BOC did it. Flash forward to 2023 and I now own physical copies of most music associated with the tape. So much of it I never heard before until the Scottish boys put their stamp of approval on it. Made me realize how much music I was missing out on while waiting for them to drop something.

There was a theory that Societas X could be the name of a new album too. But who knows. All I know is that whenever I hear Associations, either on my vinyl rip or on Societas, I just remember all the fun times I had!

Yeah it really was amazing. Me and the family sat in the living room and listen to it on the hifi. I was a little disappointed when I realised it wasn't all BoC music, But I lit up like a kid on Christmas day when the Grace Jones remix came on, I heard those rainbows sounds and just lost it completely!

My partner just loved the minute maid ad I think that was her favourite part

I think my favourite tracks from that were the Grace Jones remix and Garden Botanum, that one became my psychedelic anthem.

Like a few other tracks but tbh it's not really my kinda of stuff

But yes it's so well constructed I love the intro and it anticipation it brings!

A mixtape of other artists stuff wasn't the first thing most would have expected I think. I remember listening live and hitting my Song ID extension in Chrome in the first minute of it, not expecting much and seeing this artist name Jasper Van't Hof come up and realising it's a mixtape.

If I was to list my favorites, it would be Associations, Prospect, The Other Stranger, These Trails, Strangers, Tarantula and Dance With Us Lord.

What drives me nuts though is that some of my other favorites are still unknown. The ambient track towards the end is soooo trippy and melodic. I really like the one that sounds like a news broadcast at the start of the tape too. The Soon the Queen Will Come Our Way one is maddening because it has lyrics but no one knows what it is.

If there isn't a new album, can we at least know what these are

The whole thing was amazing. Hell, the whole WXAXRXP was amazing. I still remember being so excited just to get to listen to the Warp 10 Live recording again but live with people on a Facebook group. Too bad I didn't get to listen to Societas live.

I woke up the next day and listen to it on the way to my work. I still remember stopping walking just to listen to that Illusion remix. I was like "What the ..." and just stand there.

I came to appreciate it as its own entry in the BOC catalog and wouldn't actually trade it for anything now. They had the chance to do something different with the radio format, given they weren't restricted by copyright concerns, and did something awesome with it. SXT is a masterpiece of a mix.

There was definitely an initial disappointment with Societas X on my part too. Even though it wasn't guaranteed, the prospect of hearing 2 hours of new/old/unreleased Boards was getting me all giddy, so hearing this mixtape comprised of other artists' work bummed me out a little. I continued listening, in the hope that something Boccy would sneak in, or we'd get some sort of announcement/cryptic clue at the end of the broadcast, but of course, it wasn't meant to be.

Once the dust had settled, I could return to Societas with a different mindset, and this allowed me to appreciate the mixtape for what it was. After that second listen, I knew this was something special, and proceeded to rinse it over the rest of that summer. It led me on to some great music, but of course, as good as these tunes were individually, they were made even more magical within the context of the mix.

Admittedly, I haven't listened to SxT in a while. My circumstances have changed over the past year, which unfortunately means I have less time to listen to music, so it's hard committing 2 consecutive hours to this, but I'm hoping to squeeze a session in before the year is out.

Anyway... I hope this specific track gets ID'd (or released) as it's probably my favourite part of the mix. I don't even care if it's BoC or not at this point, I just want it!

It's out of place compared to the rest of the mix, but I kinda believe this is boc lol. The quality sounds like that of a tracker (which we know boc are interested in as shown in apparatus), and the drums are sampled from Stephen Mallinder's "Del Sol", which is off of the same album as the track "Length of Time" which was sampled in Triangles and Rhombuses.

What we are also sure of (well, not 100% but from a credible source) is that it is definitely not a Cabs track.

It's pretty hard to ignore this as coincidence.. But is this evidence enough?

Unless they decided to include a track by another artist who also sampled Stephen Mallinder.. Maybe as a nod to their inspiration for sampling him for triangles and rhombuses.. But that seems like too much of a circuitous connection

That's amazing how we know the sample of the mystery track but not the actual tune. I wish there was a way to search samples.

Really love the piano on this track. Makes me think of the music that plays in an eighties newsflash!

Whosampled says Meat beat manifesto, The future sound of London and BoC are the only known bands to have sampled Stephen Mallinder and the fact that BoC did a remix for MBM and both have sampled Stephen Mallinder is rather intriguing

I feel like everyone is sitting right on top of the answer but it remains out of view.

After so many tracks turned out to not be BOC, could they finally have one that is?

I kinda wish MDG would spill the beans on this at least. Don't need to know anything about the new album (other than it's coming) but I'd love to know the remaining Societas tracks.

I'm kinda whittling down the albums from the tape that I haven't heard so I'd love a few new ones before we get the news

I really doubt anyone us going to tell us and at this point it's looking doubtful that the artist is going to get discovered

I think we're going to have to make our own decisions about it..Personally I've made my mind up about it and I've made my mind up about sxt 111 [U6] also

We've been dying to hear early stuff, we've practically been on our knees begging and now we have some tangible evidence.. It's not as if there wasn't any BoC on societas - Grace Jones with the aquarius samples then this track with samples from the same album they've sampled from before with a close track length to Powerline from Catalog 3, plus to me it sounds like an old tune, That crazy panning like on Gemini, A06 and 747

As been stated before it has a very close track time to trillions from Closes Vol 3 and I'm obviously not this first to make the connection

and if this doesn't sound like Boc I don't know what does. To me it wouldn't sound out of place with the supposed Focus on the spiral, Close3 and Close 1 tracks which I've always maintained are legit,

These tracks have been labelled as BoC since forever ago. Firstly with Focus on the spiral, To me it just always sounded like BoC to me, Reminds me of June 9th and the fact that the end of the track the synth isn't sequenced and sounds freestyle really reminds me of some old tunes. Close 3 I don't have much to go on except track length but with Close 1 as well as similar track length, at the of the track is the Close encounters sample "He says the sun came out last night, He says it sang to him" in reverse - This sample was played outside Roughtrade when they were promoting TH with the video in the window, Plus the fact that TH uses the Close encounters melody on the number station vinyls and also at the end of New Seeds this cannot be a coincidence.

Sure someone's gonna jump in and say it doesn't sound anything like Boc but that's just, like, their opinion man!

Yeah, I know some people on this forum have gone through tons of bands and genres with no luck so I guess it is kind of getting to the point where we may never find them out and conclude they are BOC.

What's maddening is all of these tracks are fantastic too, but unless the bros or MDG ever come forward, we may never truly know.

Imagine they drop an archival set and one of these tracks is on there? You might be right Luminous Dusk!

(I know that weird industrial track, btw, is from their web loops. Or at least an emulation of it. If it's impossible to find, maybe it is them!)

Jasper Van't Hof, the Resonances and April Orchestra all appear on here and it seems to be a catalog of obscure 70s and 80s library music, jazz fusion and electronic music.

But I'm sure it's been combed through already in these past years. It is coincidental that a lot of music from the tape was covered here before 2019.


Drives me crazy that these missing tunes are languishing on some forgotten library LP from 1978 or 1982 or they put their own music on there to make us going on a wild goose chase haha
