Moz. Your contributions to the BoC world are most appreciated. That goes for the rest of you, too. Excellent work!
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
This is absolutely excellent, thank you for your work!Moz wrote:BCO track was found by BloostMedia https://www.youtube.com/@BloostMediabungler666 wrote:Cool!
How did you find these?
I found the Le Gun using https://audiotag.info/. Both of those are on the same label Lost Frog Productions, adjacent cat numbers lf063 and lf064. We checked other unids on audiotag as well but no luck so far.
What I found interesting is that these follow a game of "Associations" as well. BCO track is off an album called Things Fall Down. Track before is about Challenger disaster. Track after it is by Fausto Papetti which is possibly a reference to the inventor Faust Vrancic famous for constructing a first parachute.
Want To Sleep? is off a space themed album which includes documentary samples referring to rockets and early space programme.
I noticed it before but now I am convinced that there is a pioneer undercurrent throughout this mix.
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
Many thanks! I love exploring music on the net and digging for records, plus their taste is so impeccable the mix just switches every possible switch in my head
Sxt always felt like another boc album to me.

Great finds!
Is it weird that the missing thing I'm most interested in seeing/hearing in full is the car rental ad? I've searched YouTube (using FIlmot) for every combination of those words to no luck...

If anyone manages to find the unknown electronic song (tracker sounding one) I'll be the happiest person alive!

Is it U1 you are referring to?bungler666 wrote:If anyone manages to find the unknown electronic song (tracker sounding one) I'll be the happiest person alive!
Recently there is a new list on the wiki with the missing items. Sleuths needed!

This is a really smart observation if it turns out to not be a coincidence. The whole "space" thing as a theme never really sat right with me, because yes ok, "space", but like, so what? It's big, it's there, people have made art about it forever. But BoC have never been about that "oh let's marvel at the wonder of it all" in the same way a lot of 70s prog rock artists did. It sort of didn't fit with the mood of their work.Moz wrote: What I found interesting is that these follow a game of "Associations" as well. BCO track is off an album called Things Fall Down. But thinking about Challenger specifically, and how it was this really televised moment that went from optimism and hope to catastrophe and despair, somehow feels more in tune. Not in a gawking at disaster sense, but like, how it was this attempt to explore and push out into a frontier that failed and scarred a generation in the process. You know?
Same with the Pioneer plaque, as an object its one thing, but as humanity condensed into a transmission being sent into the void looking for an answer that never comes, suddenly that feels a lot more like something that keys into the rest of their stuff.
Environmental disasters and the decay of civilization no, planting seeds that come up dead, yes. Cults as a spectacle of human wackiness no, people's belief in an afterlife being misplaced and exploited, yes. Something specific about all the ways we try and fail to reach out, explore, continue.
Either way, great finds
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
I agree with this and the transmission going out into space could even be Societas X itself.Negamuse wrote:…a transmission being sent into the void looking for an answer that never comes, suddenly that feels a lot more like something that keys into the rest of their stuff.

I'm obsessed with the Minute Maid Bing Crosby orange juice ad section of the tape. Bing and the actors sound so weirdly drunk or something... and it's a quality that is missing from the original ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Y-UQnlH-w. Partly it's the woozy saxophone of the Fausto Papetti piece underneath that adds something but also BoC must have slowed the voices, but you wouldn't think such a slight alteration would make such a difference. It sounds like they're all high on oranges.
Then the transition into 'Shrivel Up' by Devo is a chef's kiss moment of zaniness.

Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
This has probably been discussed before, but I've long thought that the title of the mixtape itself could be an anagram, mainly due to the fact that it make little sense and 'societas' isn't a real word. I've had a go of putting 'SOCIETAS X TAPE' into various anagram solvers with no luck. Anyone any thoughts on this?
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
Not sure about anagrams but societas is a word in Latin:
Societas is a Latin word that refers to a partnership between two or more people who agree to share profits and losses. It is like a contract where people work together to achieve a common goal. In simpler terms, it means a group of people who come together to do something and share the results.

Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
Ah, my Latin isn't what it once was, forgive me.. I still think it may be anagram.
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
Maybe this is the meaning: "Generation X, or Gen X, is the demographic cohort of people born between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s"
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
The latter half could be a play on Sex Tape, given their previous pornography references (Rodox video, a very important thought etc.)
Re: the concept of song title associations in the sequencing, don't forget that the first song on the mixtape is named 'Associations.'

The English translation is:Nullius rei sine socio iocunda est possessio. Non magis utilitati est ager cum redditibus amplis quam uicinus equalis cum moribus bonis. Sit tibi erga singulos salsi libra sermonis ut te blandum pueri, comitem iuuenes, grauem senes meciantur.
Nothing is a pleasant possession without a partner. A field with large rents is no more useful than an equal neighbour with good character. Let the balance of your speech be salt to each one, so that you may be flattered by children, by young men, and by old men.

Societas X is an homage to esoteric orders such as those of Rosicrucianism.
