Songs/Adverts that are similar to the Societas X tape

Post by YELLOW »

I've been playing this song "Radiance" by a group called Oppenheimer Analysis on repeat for a while. I definitely think it could've been a song on the Societas X tape. I kinda wanted to start a thread where people could post other obscure electronic/psychadelia tunes, and also maybe some interesting interstitials like they did on the tape. Let me know your thoughts!

Although it’s probably too well known to appear on a mix like Societas X, the song Filthy Habits by Frank Zappa has a similar feel to Vulcun Mind Probe by George Duke.

Given that Duke left Zappa’s band in ‘76 and these tracks came out in ‘78 & ‘79, I do wonder if one may have been a tribute to the other.

Glad that you bring this up actually, even if it is off topic (sorry OP). It is not entirely impossible that they haven't collaborated again. I have a theory that Duke, Zappa and some other big shots released stuff under an alias due to contractual obligations with their respective labels at the time, later 70s.

Amount of non existing people credited throughout the releases on this label is really something. Marcus Duke sounds exactly like George.

I wonder if 'Aphex Twin: [mostly mellow] for Supreme' https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3jfnl ... SZBqS2cJg7 was inspired by Societas X tape at all? Maybe not, but there's a lot of obscure vintage tracks here which is quite a different kind of selection to his usual jungle heavy DJ sets.

Doubt it, think Aphex can stand on his own. Both him and boc were likely partly influenced by same things. Great selection, happy to see this side of him too.

GENUINE COMPETITION/GIVE-AWAY:

WAV download:

https://mega.nz/folder/R4lR3D5Z#4zcFxh8c5basbgABnEMFcQ

The first poster to correctly identify at least 17 of the 20 tracks included in this short Societas X-esque mix, will be sent via the post (at no cost to them) these Doepfer Mini-Cases (including all modules shown). You can use music-recognition apps to help you:

Image

These modules comprise a complete synth voice (oscillator, filter, VCA, envelope with sample and hold and analogue delay [I'll include some patch cables too]). This will get you started in modular synthesis. You would then need to add a CV sequencer or CV keyboard to get the most out of this set-up. Also, you'll need 2 x 12V-15VAC 400mA (minimum) transformers. If the winner happens to be located in Australia, I can include these. Otherwise a winner in another region would need to purchase the appropriate type.

Why am I giving these away? Because I have lots of modules and these are surplus to my needs and don't fit in my current workflow. So they may as well go to someone who will use them, rather than have them collecting dust on my shelf.

nogaxeh, I had to substitute in a couple of other modules (joystick and dual quantizer) instead of the delay (I forgot that the delay was broken, sorry for misleading you on this). Here’s a quick video demonstrating some of the basic sounds, then I put it through some effects (not included). I will include all those patch cables though:

Sorry for the off topic post, resume Societas X posting.

nogaxeh have you had a chance to try out the mini-cases yet? Do you have any other gear with voltage control that you may be able to connect them to? Even if you don’t, I think you should be able to get some useful sounds out of them. Let me know if you have any trouble patching the various modules together, I might be able to provide some tips (although there are many different ways to patch them).

Here's an experimental remix of the Societas x Tape using a Tasty Chips GR-1 Granular Synthesizer (with cross-fades added afterwards by dragging the recorded sections together in Reaper). Also features the BOC Drum Pack provided by ⁨MlsaJuyc70⁩ (https://youtu.be/lfdcheb4NV4). Some of the combinations sound like opposing forces, the rest somehow fall into place.

Great thread! These two were some recent discoveries that spent a lot of time stuck in my head (in a good way):
