One of them is for sure Derrick May from Detroit, i have all the releases on the Transmat label.

I can even go further back in time, what about some of the German band Kraftwerk 's albums, also IDM, The Man Machine from 1978, or Computerworld from 1981, that's the very early IDM for me :!:

Go back to 1969 and you get Gershon Kingsley and his Moog masterpiece 'Popcorn'; a pioneering piece of electronica for sure that is still covered by todays acts.

The way people cover Popcorn these days is weighing a bit too heavily on goofy novelty; I'd love to hear a quality cover or remix one of these days...

Richard D. James made a remix of Popcorn in 1992 as 'Caustic Window'.
More recently a group called 'Space Penguins' sampled Popcorn for their song 'The Electrofunk'.

This year i bought the double live cd from Kraftwerk, and there still fantastic, i saw them live several times myself, they stay one of the best in IDM for me :!:

delia darbyshire from the bbc's radiophonic workshop created the theme to 'doctor who' which is a masterpiece even to this day. it was created through the use of oscillators and tape loops!!!!
the silver apples were also using synths in the early 60's.

the dr who theme tune definitely counts in my book. not many people had access to synths back in 1961 so i think that is fair game. and orbital did re-work it. i can still remember the first time i heard that theme tune. very creepy.
